Smart meters

Hi there I’m wondering if any of you know why £150 has been credited on to my electricity on my smart meter I have no emails from Ovo regarding this added payment & I know what you all must be thinking that it’s the warm home discount but I received that back on November has anyone else had this payment? I spoke to my sister who is with another provider for her gas & electric & she said she had £130 added to her gas & it a financial assistance payment my mum who is with the same provider as my sister also has had £130 added to her meter as well & was given word from said provider of a financial assistance payment but I’ve had &150 & absolutely no idea why surely it’s not the warm home discount that’s been mistakenly paid to me can anyone shed light or has anyone else had the WHD & have now received this payment with no word about it I’m freaking out that it’s been a mistake & il be made to repay this back meaning il have debt on my meter please he

Here for help again. Last year we had Solar, battery, ASHP, and a smart meter put in. OVO only did the smart meter. They also gave us the Chameleon IHD 3. It was working fine and we found it really useful. Moved to Octopus Sept 2025 because SEG payment was better. On Feb 24th this year our Outgoing octopus was up and running. I can see our bills and usage is all as expected but since the 24th Feb the IHD has been showing CORRECT kWh use but WRONG cost. It’s nowhere near what it should be. For instance this morning at 8am it said we had spent 22pence! Not even the standing charge of 44 p. I know SEG payments can’t be dropping the price that much infact they shouldn’t be showing on an IHD should they ?Ive tried hard reset but still saying the same. Any ideas?

Have recently had solar panels installed and although I can check how much I am exporting via the main electricity smart meter I cannot see how I can see this info on my smart meter display - apparently I should see a pylon icon - have I got an old display (photo attached). Thanks. 

Hello, My smart meter is in the cellar of my downstairs neighbour. The flat has been sold by my landlord who  has asked me to get OVO in to install a meter in my flat. How can I do this?

Why is my smets2 gas meter being replaced.

We’re both in our 80’s with health problems and I would like to know how much preparation we have to do before we get our meter changed. The backboard is screwed to the outside wall close to the ceiling (it’s an overhead supply) and during a kitchen refit a cupboard was built around it.  To get at this cupboard, the free-standing gas cooker will need to be moved and the engineer will have to stand on a work-top and possibly dismantle part of the cupboard.  Will they move the cooker (we can’t do it), and will they repair the cupoard if they have to dismantle it?  At our age and with our health, we can’t do it.Any other tips on what we might need to do would be welcome.  We didn’t want a smart meter, but it’s being forced on us because apparently the certification has run out on the old one. (any ways of getting round this?)Thanks in advance!

I’ve got some metrics from smartpaymapi.ovoenergy.com/usage/api but I had been hoping there would be a metric for Econ7 and Anytime but there’s just consumption in khw.Does anyone know about how to get Econ7 and Anytime metrics out of the API?JSON fragment 

Eon put in a new smart meter in September 2025. We only have electricitry.  We have a tarriff with Peak and Off-Peak times.  We have an ongoing suitation where Eon constantly reverse the reading/unit cost by either sending us statements where the Peak use is actually the Off-Peak and the Off-Peak use is given as Peak use or the statements show the correct Peak and Off-Peak use but then charge us the wrong rate. They have now asked us to send photos of the meter taking “ spaced reads tests ...about an hour apart”.  I have asked why. My understanding is that with a smart meter the company can see any use at any time, possibly as frequently as every half hour. They also know what tarriff we are on  so wat added benefit will photos be ?I would appreiate any thoughts as to why Eon are seeking photos when they have the information at their finger tips.Thanks

Our Hot water tank no longer works since January this year (2026).Heating engineer checked the tank and said we must contact OVO because he reckoned OVO must have switched off our RTS signal. Twice we have explained as best we can on the phone to OVO our problem. In the first call to OVO customer services we were advised that the necessary software modifications had been made but if after 72 hours our normal Off-Peak service for the Immersion heated hot water tank still wasn’t working we should call the Technical department ( for which they gave us the phone number). After five days (well above 100 hours) the hot water tank still wasn’t working. We called OVO Technical department and were advised that everything was working at the OVO end. But how does this help if we still don’t have our hot water tank working? Can anyone suggest what to do now? 

Does anyone know why my Aclara SMETS2 will stop working properly on 1st June 2026 and needs replacing?  It’s new and was only installed in April 2025. 

Hello, So my plans when installing a 8kw solis hybrid inverter and 16kwh lifepo4 battery were not for export, just a protection for blackouts (the house now runs on UPS). It is also a first step to lower electricity expenses, as they will only grow when we get an ASHP. Eventually we may add some PV.  Our battery install is ready.  🙂Since our DNO uk power networks stated they would approve us to do 5kw export, taking the next step while it was all fresh seemed simpler.  I now have an export MPAN, actually with 8kw approved. Our smart meter is export-ready. But we do not have MCS nor flexorb (as I had no plan to export now, I saved the expense).  Is there an advantage to get MCS paperwork vs short-circuiting and setting up export to an utility operator that does not require it? Or is there anything to gain with MCS?  😉 

Hello!I wonder if anyone can tell me why IHD is saying gas disablement suspended?  

I currently have a peak/off peak smart meter with my current supplier for electricity with an  SSC  (Standard Settlement Configuration )  id 0939. Do anyone know is all electricity company suppliers must offer this ?  Thanks . Much appreciated

I keep getting invitations to get a smart meter and I really don’t want one is there a way to stop these invitations ? How do I make it clear to OVO that I dont want a smart meter ?

I have a smart meter and am on economy. 10 tariff. My electric underfloor heating and immersion are connected to the meter via a consumer unit connected to port 5 and the rest of the electric useage is via a separate consumer. unit connected to port 1. The meter switches correctly to energize port 5 at the proper times, and port 1 is energized 24  /7. My question is when the meter energizes port 5 and I am charged off peak rate is the energy being consumed via port 1 being charged at the off peak rate as well or is everything still split by the meter so 1 is only ever charged at peak and 5 is only charged at off peak or is everything charged at the off peak rate and then when 5 gets switched off as per tarrif the meter charges everything still on at peak?

I've had an unsolicited letter today (9/1/26) from Engage saying that my meter may not be working properly. Now I did have an old pay as you go key meter until June 2025, and it did stop working. OVO sent a letter. BUT I had a smart meter fitted later that month and since then apart from the signal dropping out occasionally (it always comes back) it's working fine. I've just topped up online via the website to check and the money went on straight away according to the hub. If there was an issue with the meter then surely the hub wouldn't register the payment, as the hub talks to the meter, not my bank card! All payments since June have gone through automatically including the £150 warm home discount. Everything is working fine! Is this just Engage having received an outdated list of old meter owners from OVO? I don't need this stress as I'm autistic and will overthink this massively. 

My Smart Meters (Electricity+Gas) were installed 1 week ago along with an In Home Display (IHD). The IHD on day 2 lost connection and I have not been able to get it back since. I have gone online and confirmed that no readings are being sent so at present there is nothing smart about it, unfortunately. The Smart meters do not come with any instructions neither does the IHD (in-built tutorial is basic only). Pressing 9 on the Electricity meter turns the digital display on (they have power saving displays) and presents the data you would expect to see on the IHD e.g. used today, used last week etc. There are no issues with my Wi-Fi. I have gone on-line to reset my browser and that doesn't work. I have used WPS and manual key entry to connect the IHD to my Wi-Fi and although it recognizes my ISP (~Sky) it is still not working. Currently, I'm unsure if it is not connected to the Wi-Fi or if it cannot connect to the meters themselves (instructions would help). IHD is within 20 metres of

I live in a 3 bed semi and have for the last 15 years. Recently switched to ovo and then had the smart meters installed .My usage has crept up over the years like everyone's. Now on OVO with smart meters and nothing has changed in my home  my monthly usage/direct debit has gone to £246 a month that's a second mortgage any ideas why my bills have double since i switched to ovo?

Hi all, I've been contacted by someone saying they are an M Group Energy engineer hired by Ovo to come and fix something connected to my smart meter, and that it's a safety issue. I've received an email showing my (correct) Ovo account number, address and mobile number. I've also had a text and calls in the past couple days. I haven't replied to anything. Ovo confirmed they have no visits planned, so I've reported the email to report@phishing.gov.uk and blocked the number. Is there anything else I should be doing? Through their chat, Ovo support said they said there's nowhere else to report this and that they would never share details like account numbers with third parties. I'm not quite sure if they make account numbers public (I'd assume not?), but I found it concerning that so many of my details were in the email. Flagging here in case anyone else has experienced this.  Lorena

I finally got my smart meter on 11th July this year - PAYG for THTC - and all seems well.Until I got an email from OVO saying they have to upgrade this meter before 31st Dec for it to keep working. Unfortunately, your current smart meter model is now being removed from the wider smart network on 31 December 2025. For your meter to keep its smart features, we need to upgrade it before then. Is this normal? Why would they install a meter with less than 6 months working life left? Do they mean a software upgrade or is it a whole new meter? It is an engineer visit, that I do know, but trying to book anything online when you have a PAYG meter is an exercise in frustration

is there any point in my having a smart meter installed as there is no mobile signal from any network where I live? Can smart meters communicate over WiFi or WiFi Calling for example?

It’s been a long story… Some while ago we were offered a SMETS1 smart meter, but we delayed until a SMETS2 was available. Then an engineer came to install a SMETS2 meter, and left saying something about no signal, leave it a while. The meter is in a lower ground floor area, with a mobile signal.Finally, July 2020, new SMETS2 meter installed - not talking to the network, but wait a bit and it’ll ‘probably’ be OK. No IHD left. I thought that even if the thing couldn’t talk to Ovo at least an IHD would allow me to read the meter easily, so I requested one, which eventually arrived. Silly me, I didn’t realise that the meter - supposedly installed for MY benefit - wouldn’t talk to my home network if it couldn’t talk to OVO first.After a while we got back to Ovo who said there was nothing they could do and we would have to move our meter, at our expense (approx £250) and hope the new position had a better signal.
