Smart meters

I got a smart meter fitted today but it will not let me navigate with any of the buttons, displaying say there’s a new message but can’t read it.

Over the last 6 months I have been carefully following the various Forum threads regarding the (now delayed) RTS shutdown and the consequential loss of the THTC tariff. To date I have had no information directly from SSE (soon to be OVO).  When I called the SSE Specialist Heating Team was I assured by someone  that my supply is not in jeopardy and that a technical solution is awaited to allow a SMART meter installation, but no timescale was given. Nor was there any acknowledgment that the lack of  network coverage in my area (NW Sutherland)  had previously precluded fitting  a SMART meter anyway. The main reason for trying to get concrete information revolves around my intention to upgrade my old storage heaters to more energy efficient models which are also controllable remotely. As I understand it the modern heaters work best on Economy 7 or 10 (if available) tariffs which means if I want ultimately to save money, I  need to change from the current  THTC meter. Does

Okay, here goes... Smart meters installed in June 2019, except they weren't commissioned until January 2020. Since then my meter readings are being sent hourly to OVO and my usage is visible online after 24 hours, but my IHD is only showing gas usage. I've asked the email team , about showing electricity usage on the IHD and after 16 days advised that they'd requested my IHD's firmware to be refreshed and I should wait 48 hours and turn my IHD off and on. I've tried this but after 3 days nothing has changed and I'm looking to try and resolve this before the anniversary of the installation (although maybe I'll get a prize for the longest smart meter installation?) Can anyone suggest a solution? Many thanks  

is there any point in my having a smart meter installed as there is no mobile signal from any network where I live? Can smart meters communicate over WiFi or WiFi Calling for example?

I booked a smart meter appointment with OVO a few days ago. Yesterday I got a text from “SMSplc” telling me the appointment could not be carried out on the day due to engineer availability. I provided my phone number, partners phone number and address.It seemed legitimate as the grammar used was correct, the phone number (03301359948) is on the SMS PLC website and it knew of my existing appointment. However, when looking the number I find conflicting reports online. I did not receive a confirmation email about the rebooked appointment on a different day either. I am now anxious that I have been scammed, and customer service is unavailable. Help?

We finally had a smart meter fitted today, and as the fitter was leaving (after he fitted the new meter) he showed me a warning notice with the header "Danger do not use warning notice", that stated the following: "Gas meter and pipework too close to electrical equipment unable to fit separation board suggest alterations"He reassured me at the time that this was nothing to worry about but since he left i’ve been getting increasingly concerned.How would i go about getting this checked out, who by?And what can be done about it? Can I get a normal electrician to move the electrics ? Do I need the gas board to move the meter? I’m really not happy about the way this was handled 

Hello! I’d really appreciate any input anyone can give. My late mums house had water supplied from a borehole. The three phase supply that is used to pump that water to Mums house (and 3 others) was linked to my mums domestic account. In order to see the house I had to have a separate meter put in, to move it from the house. The three phase used to used about 1200 kWh per 6mths. The new meter is now reading usage of 2800 per month! It seems like the meter is constantly supplying electric rather than just when water is being demanded.I’m trying to get my electrician back but it’s taking time.Any one got any ideas please? I just can’t fathomhow the usage can be so high and it’s really worrying bearing in mind in currently having to pay it. thanks! 

I recently did a bill review and realised there was a period where I had extremely high usage last autumn. I didn’t notice as I was already making overpayments due to a billing error when first opening the account. As the issue is resolved I can’t test to discern where this came from.the usage patterns seem like there were “pulses”. For info, I do not have heaters or water heaters/pumps etc. any ideas as to what could have caused this?images attached with some examples. ( P.S. I realise this forum is for Ovo, but I couldn’t find one for octopus and since this is none account related I thought you clever people might know!)

I just read  this article and if true I wish I never asked to have a gas smart meter fitted.Knowing my luck the battery will die in the winter months when I really need the central heating !I would have thought that there would be a battery low warning so you have time to contact your energy supplier to replace the battery ?

Hello, I have just had a smart meter installed. I have asked to continue with my existing Economy 7 plan, it suits my lifestyle. On my old meter it was simple to check between the Daytime/Nighttime  usage. How do I know which tariff is currently being metered. ?How do I collect my monthly usage on the 1st day of the month, as I have done previously. 

Hi, After the constant nagging from OVO to install smart meters, I finally gave in about a year ago. The installer came and refused to fit it, because they were unable to climb a ladder (the meter box is above the front door). We share a common entrance wirth next door and their smart meter (fitted by Utility Warehouse) is next to ours in the same place. I am now not able to request a SMART meter. We are looking to rent our property out soon so it would be very useful (I don’t think the tenants will want to climb a ladder to read the meter!)The gas meter is outside the front door and easy to access.Any suggestions for a way forward? 

I am about to have two old (RTS) THTC meters economy 10 each has its own consumer board being replaced with a smart meter. I have WiFi timer controllers on all my Storage heaters/hot water units all wired to same consumer board. Unfortunately I have 5 other basic panel radiator wired to the peak priced consumer board. Is it possible to ask fitter on installation of new smart meter, to wire via Henley block (?) both consumer boards as one split board ? This would allow the benefit of the off peak tariff to all house, but would of course require careful management of the high usage loads Storage heaters/hot water via timed controllers.  It is normal practice on these meter switches to wire both consumer units to one smart meter for whole house benefit the off peak tariff or will installation team wire smart meter to two separate outputs on smart, one to each board, with Storage heater board only being live during off peak as now. Spoke wit

 The meters and the fuse in my house are currently screwed directly onto the  wooden panels that line the  inside a cuboard built into the wall .  Its an old 1900’s stone built property. this has been the fitting  arangement since installation of the electricity supply and originl black meter  in 1950.  Since then SSE,  as the retai supplyier at that time, has installed an  off peak  meter  in the 70’s for  storage heaters,  and a check meter in 2019, both screwed by them  directly onto the  wall panels, same as the fuse and original meter,  ie without a  back board, and seemingly not an issue as far as they were concerned.I am now trying to arrange for OVO to fit a SMART meter. They can come next week However they say a  back board  is essential , but theyalso  say they will not fit  one  and to peak to the DNO IE SSE.I have done so , and they say they will send someone to fit a piece of  backboard behind their  incoming fuse, but that it.So now seem to be in a

Hello I have economy 7 night storage heating…..it is controlled by the teleswitch which activates the Contactor to turn on the storage heater circuit overnight.The teleswitch is to be discontinued in June and a smart meter installed at some stage to control the economy 7 heating. Will the contactor still be required to switch the heating circuit on and off or will it be redundant and the new smart meter system do that job instead? The night storage heating only is on the separate circuit controlled by the contactor thanks for any advice 

I need to take a manual reading for gas but I can’t work out how to find it on my smart meter. The electricity figure shows up, but not the gas one.

Smart meter installed/replaced today, will update if any issues. Engineer was a lovely chap, gone for economy 10 as split over 3 sections in 24 hours. Just minding on we have a 210 litre unvented cylinder which was wired to heat in the offpeak previously, this should remain the same ie heat during those new off peak timeslots? Also the old economy 7 boost box was left in situ and advised to continue using this for a boost if required (but hopeful the boosts will be less necessary if heating up the water during 3 slots during the day). There is no boost function on the new meter. See pic of meter and said boost box/new meter set up.

New smart meter fitted 3 days ago. My previous radio Teleswitch controlled Economy 7 meters charged up my storage heaters - 10.30-11.30 pm & 4.40-5.30am - so that's 2 hours charging each night off peak.My new smart meter Economy 7 tariff times are midnight - 7am. Am I still paying for x2 1 hour charging periods each night within that period ? I noticed that my smart meter red light was blinking quickly at approx 2.30am.I had assumed that my new charging times would be midnight-1am & 6-7am.I don't want to pay for more than x2 1 hour charging periods each night with higher bills.Your advice please.  

Can a smart meter be installed in a basement/cellar? My electric meter is in the basement and gas meter on the ground floor about 4 meters apart.

on 1st feb, my electricity consumption increased from about 10kwh a day to nearly 30kwh. I was not even at home on 1st feb nor for the following weeks (have been away since late Jan). The readings have remained at the higher level since then, even though the house is empty. Over the same period, my gas usage dropped from 4kwh a day to almost 0. Which makes more sense.Has anyone had the same issue? Its not like it has gradually increased. Thanks.

Has anyone with a new meter on E10 in Scotland worked out the E10 times since we are back on UTC after the clocks went back last night 

I am thinking of choosing a fixed tariff but want to know if having a smart meter is compulsory with a fixed rate product, ideally I don’t want a smart meter?

Hi I have a Geo Trio 2 IHD with Wi-Fi.  The IHD is connected to both SMETs 2 meters.  However the online setup is grey out.  I’s there anyway to activate this?  OVO are being a nightmare at present with communications.  They sent me an email to reply to due to some issues with my smart meters auto sending readings.  The email is only a couple of days old, and they asked me to reply to the email.  I have done so and the email address is no longer valid.Thanks 

Well I had the latest version 2 smart meter installed in October (8 weeks ago)but was not left a manual nor is there an online version (only for version 1). Whilst daily usage is being communicated to the portable device that you plug into a wall socket it seems that my account is only picking up the electricity readings and not the gas. So the question is 'how do I manually read the smart meter for gas?

Hello,At the start of the year, I change my billing type to ‘fixed’.This coincides with my smart meter only showing £0.64 daily, no other energy usage.I suspect this is the standing charge rate.I have turned the meter off overnight hoping it would reset, but it still only shows £0.64.Any ideas?
