I am a new OVO customer and already have a Gen 1 smart meter fitted by my previous supplier who fitted it in about an hour, therefore there should be no issues of site suitability etc. I rang OVO to apply for a smart meter and was told they would put me on a waiting list for a cancellation in my area as the allocation is currently but full in the meantime I should watch my online account for an offer to fit. Does this mean I still need to officially apply or that the application for a cancellation installation means I have now applied?
4 months ago, Community Moderator, Tim, announced that OVO was actually working on a new In Home Display Unit. They were being tested....... He also said "watch this space!". Has OVO started to install these new units yet please? Thank you.
I am considering switching my electricity & gas supplier from British Gas to OVO. I currently have a Smart Meter which was installed by BG. Would this meter continued to be used by OVO (i.e. it wouldn't be necessary to install a completely new meter by OVO)?If it would continue to be used by OVO, would it be necessary for OVO to change the method of communicating meter readings ( Ithink BG receive reading via mobile phone technology)? Assuming that OVO will need to do something to link my Smart Meter to their systems, would manual readings have to be submitted until such time that the alteration was made? Thanks in advance
Hello Ovo Forum. I'm currently a first:utility customer with a Secure Liberty smart meter identical to those installed by Ovo. My fixed term contract ends in a month or so and I presume that if I request to switch to Ovo, the changeover will be totally automatic. So both companies will agree my ending/opening meter readings and I will then open an Ovo online account to view details as I do now with first:utility. Am I being over optomistic? Has anyone had first hand experience of this? How did it go? I don't want to lose the smart function of my meters as they're at the back of cupboards, easy to see with a torch but awkward to press those tiny little buttons for displaying the readings. I dont want to be unloading/reloading cupboards every month. So being able to continue using the smart meter is desirable. I was surprised to discover that the in-home display unit (Pipit 500) cannot display meter readings! In fact, I found its design very dim considering its supposed to be sma
I've had a new smart meter fitted along with a Chameleon IHD - all working fine as setup by the engineer. I've read several times on the forum of people asking how to connect their IHD to their WiFi. Do I need to do this and why? The engineer told me that the meter connects to OVO via its SIM card and the IHD to the smart meter - no need for a wifi connection.
Hi, Our smart meter failed over the weekend which resulted in being without gas for nearly 24hrs? Can OVO provide answers to the questions below? 1. Why did the smart meter not proactivly inform me or Ovo that the meter was about to fail ? No warning it just died and left us ( family with 2 children under 5) without gas for heating,Hot water or cooking. Not very SMART ? 2. We thought the battery life of the smart meter was on avergae 10 years? this lasted 3 at best ? engineers that have visited say that on average its 2 -3 years? Why are we being informed its 10 years ? Essentially are we looking at replacements every 3 years? Not very SMART ? 3. Upon discovering we had no gas we tried to contact OVO out of business hours... which is a challenge , number on this site and on the internet are business hours only and it took a lot of searching to actually find an emergency contact. once we did get through we were informed that there was nothing they could do till 9am the following day?? The export of electricity can be read on the Smart Meter by pressing button 9. In fact, I helped your contracted meter reader to read the export figure (something he had not been required to do previously). Would it be possible to do the following: take the export meter reading remotely; and show the "negative" as positive readings in your Smart Gateway statistics?
My gas meters outside and my electricity meters inside - Will I be able to get them both upgraded to smart meters?
Our gas meter is outside the front of the house. The electricity meter is inside, in a cupboard under the stairs, to the side of the house. They're about 8 metres apart. Does our gas meter have to be moved before we can get a smart meter, and if so, what's the process? Thanks!
I have twice scheduled a smart meter install with Ovo. The first time the engineer told my wife our "tails were too short" and the meter was not installed. My call to customer support did not resolve the issue. Another install was later scheduled but the engineer failed to turn up. I recall I was offered £20 compensation. I just want a smart meter ... thoughts?
For my sins I have noted monthly usage for my gas and electricity for the past 5 years and thought smart meters would allow a consistent regular means of recording my utility usage. Since my Smart Meters were fitted Feb 2017 my electricity has readings have been comparable with previous years but my gas useage has not. Who at OVO is able to check that my gas meter is working properly , first proper month (March 2017) after installation reported 208 units gas compared to an average for this month of 75 units previously. Thanks
After two years of trying to make the smart meters communicate in Cumbria, Lowri Beck recently installed an IHD so that I can send my readings in monthly (the gas meter is impossible to read unless you are a limbo dancer!). However the gas reading is given only in KWH. I cannot find anyway to give this kind of reading on the OVO website. Can you tell me how to do this please?
Smart meter myth-busting - Does it need resetting after a power cut? Am I still free to switch supplier?
I understand that after a power cut Ovo Smart Meters need to be reset manually for power to be restored to the house. So if one is away from the house for some time, say on holiday or for work, the refrigeration/ freezer will not be restored and neither will the heating system function. Added to that the Ovo meters are not interchangeable with other suppliers so one is not able to leave Ovo without additional problems. If what I have described is correct why would anyone ever fit a Smart Meter?
I had a smart electric meter installed some time ago and a gas meter last week. The engineer did not pair the gas meter with my IHD, so I believe I need the PIN to do this. Also, my meters have not given any readings to OVO since the gas meter installation although the WAN light is flashing correctly.
