Will my Elster (Honeywell) AS300P smart meter and In-Home Display (IHD) still work now I've switched to OVO?

Hi - I’ve just initiated my switch from SSE to Ovo 2-year fixed and I have a couple of questions as follows -

My SSE smart meter was installed several years ago so it remains to be seen whether it will work with the Ovo systems but, since Ovo and SSE are part of the same group of companies, I’m hoping it will be fine.  If the meter is unable to communicate with Ovo, will it still be able to communicate with the in-home display unit?  My meter is not very easy to access and so, if I have to give manual readings, it would be a lot easier to get them from the display unit rather than fighting my way through to the meter itself.  If my existing smart meter is incompatible, how soon will I be able to get a replacement meter installed?

Here is a picture of my meter ...

Great to hear about your recent switch to OVO.

Looks like you’ve got a SMETS 1 Elster (Honeywell) smart meter there - these were the S1 meters installed by your previous provider amongst others. Here at OVO we installed the Secure Liberty S1 meter so originally could only communicate with these type of S1 meter or any SMETS2 meter.

There’s good news though, all S1 meters are currently being remotely updated to allow them to communicate with all suppliers, much like SMETS 2 meters do - read more about this process here. The Elster (Honeywell) meters are due to have completed this process in October 2021 - so the likelihood is the connectivity should’ve returned already, meaning your In-Home Display can be re-paired to your meters. Our Support Team can help with this if it doesn’t happen automatically.

Once your meters are ‘enrolled’ you’ll also be able to view your usage data on the usage pages of your online account or OVO app (download for Android or iOS).

Hope this helps you enjoy the full benefits of going smart!

Hi @Enquire and thanks for reaching out about this.

I can see that Elster smart meter is a first generation (SMETS1) smart meter. However it’s very likely to have all the second generation functionality, as a result of something jargon-sounding called ‘being enrolled onto the DCC

So OVO and any other supplier will be able to communicate with your meter. That’s the good news.

The bad news is that currently the functionality to change a two rate meter and tariff to a one rate meter and tariff doesn’t exist within OVO’s billing platform. It will very soon.

However, there’s more good news: we can put you on a tariff that charges the same ‘single rate’ tariff prices on both registers. Another bit of jargon for this: P1-P2. So if your preference is to move away from economy-7, we have that workaround: charge both registers at the same rate.

Our Support team can raise an internal request to make this happen. If you’re on a fixed tariff, the single rate price will be set to the single rates available when you fixed in. If you’re on Simpler, it will just be the latest single rate prices available.

Make this request to our Support team via web chat and feel free to link to this topic if you needed them to see it!
