Why has my usage doubled since my smart meter was installed?

I live in a 3 bed semi and have for the last 15 years. Recently switched to ovo and then had the smart meters installed .
My usage has crept up over the years like everyone's.

Now on OVO with smart meters and nothing has changed in my home  my monthly usage/direct debit has gone to £246 a month that's a second mortgage any ideas why my bills have double since i switched to ovo?

Having a smart meter installed won't directly increase your costs. There are no hidden effects on usage, and your tariff won't change. There are two things that will change after getting a smart meter though:

Your bills will no longer be estimated

If you hadn't provided regular reading previously then your bills may have been under-estimated. As we’ll receive a final reading from the old meter when this is removed this could generate a larger than expected bill around the time your smart meters are installed. The good news is that now we’ll be receiving regular readings sent automatically from your meter when we need it you can be sure your bill is spot on. This avoids any nasty bill surprises in future.

On the other hand, if the final reading from the old meter taken by our engineer is under what we’ve been estimating, then we’ll credit the difference to your account.

Your meter will be accurate

The meter will clock accurately. Old meters can slow down, or even speed up meaning they're not measuring your energy usage correctly. We'd only expect to see this with very old meters. A brand new meter, smart or otherwise, will clock what you're using accurately.

If you’ve got solar panels installed, a smart meter will ensure that any excess energy generated by the panels doesn’t make your meter clock backwards. This was a commonly seen problem with older traditional electricity meters.

It might be worth considering what else could have caused the increase to your monthly direct debit:

Plan prices may have changed over time

Another thing to consider is, if you've renewed onto a new plan recently, the unit rates and standing charges will have changed. You can check your unit rates and daily standing charges in the ‘Plan’ tab of your online account or OVO app (download for Android or iOS).

Your Direct Debit calculations are not only based on your current usage

If you notice an increase to your suggested Direct Debit amount after having a smart meter installed, it’s worth bearing in mind other things we check when calculating your recommended Direct Debit. We consider your average monthly usage and also the current balance, plus the length left on your contract. The Direct Debit will need to be increased if you have an outstanding balance or are coming to the end of your contract.

Is there any support available if I’m struggling to pay for my energy?

There’s help available if you’re struggling to pay your energy bills from us here at OVO, from government schemes and charities as well.  There are many ways we can help – such as setting up a payment plan for you, which spreads the cost of your energy to make it more manageable. If you want to find out about payment plans, you can request one online here. We’ll take you through what you need to do, and ask you for some details.

Our dedicated team is also specially trained to support you. They can make sure you’re receiving any financial assistance from the government that you’re eligible for, and take you through payment support schemes that are available.

@Blastoise186 I do not see it in the last post of the first page? Did you remove it?

It’s well hidden but I don’t want to make it any easier for anyone else to spot it… Hence my new APIIDCSD5PMA gadget to do it for me because I’m a Lazy Blastoise :D

Apparently, it appeared now.

So it did - thanks.

Sorry about the magic link. You just clicked it - the idea was that you copy it, then change the account number to your own and change the dates to those of your own billing period, which I took to be 13th of the month to 12th of the next. Try it again:

Your meter readings indicate that you’re using about 7 kWh at peak rate each day; that’s including 2-3 kWh for the shower. Overnight offpeak is about 11 kWh. That’s what a 750 W storage heater would take to store up enough heat in 7 hours to release during the daytime, so it’s not an alarming amount. Your photo of it will help us to confirm or refute this. The 4-5 kWh over and above the shower is a lot for a single person in a small flat, especially one who’s out all day. I’d suggest using the IHD to see what it is that’s using so much. It’s most probably heating equipment of some sort that’s gobbling up most of it.

Eagerly looking forward to seeing your photos ...

You need to uninstall Adobe Acrobat/Acrobat Reader for a start ...

The screenshot shows Edge’s PDF reader. It uses an Adobe plug-in, so it’s Acrobat-based but not a standalone app.

Oh good… More Adobe code full of security vulns in a web browser… Just what Microsoft needs right about now… Really don’t get why they can’t just use the Chromium built-in PDFium one…

Anyway… @sfmoosavian we have fixed your PII Leak - the image has been swapped. Make sure to check the address bar next time! :D

I had a smart meter installed two weeks ago, and surprised that I’ve not recieved a bill yet. I logged in, and apparently I now owe 2 grand?
I’ve provided readings every few months, the last one I can’t quite remember when, but looking at the bill summary, there’s now approximetly an extra 100 pound added for every month I’ve been paying. That wasn’t there before, so no idea what’s happened, I’ve payed the exact amount I’ve been informed I owe every month prior.

I’ve tried to look to see if there’s an obvious place to check details online, or query OVO why my bill is so huge, but can’t see anything. The chap who did the installation said I wouldn’t need to add my recent reading, even though I got an email a few days prior asking for it, saying it wouldn’t be necessary. Who do I contact at OVO to check this?

Edit: Just noticed on the bills, “Heating energy use charge”.
But OVO are not my gas supplier? Pretty sure I don’t have a heat pump either.
Looking at the bills, that seems to be the culprit, but I’ve no idea where that came from.

First, about the closing readings from your old meter(s): the engineer should have taken these, and probably also a photo of them for proof, and submitted them as part of his post-installation report. He should also have noted them on a ‘meter exchange label’ and left it in the meter cupboard or pinned to the meter backboard. They will be used to prepare the bill covering the exchange.

You mention a ‘heating energy use charge’ on your bills. Some systems - particularly in Scotland - involved two meters, one of which measured the electricity supply to a special heating circuit that was live all the time. Could this have been your arrangement? Again, the meter exchange label may give some clues if you can find it.

It often takes a few weeks for everything to fall into place after a meter exchange, so please don’t be alarmed about odd things you may be seeing on your online account until six weeks have passed from the date the meters were exchanged.

Hi.

Last month I had a smart meter installed, was waiting for an updated bill, and apparently there was an issue with my meter before, and have now been charged £2000 over the past year for electricity I apparently used? I’m a single person in a one bedroom flat, I’ve just talked to someone at OVO, who insisted that I had two separate electricity meters which were replaced, but I only had the one, which I was using to provide readings. I’ve tried to make sense of my bill, the massive figure seems to come from a “Heating meter reading”, but I can’t find anything about that online, and OVO are not my gas supplier.

I on average was only paying about £60 a month, and even their estimated charge for the next year is about £600, so I really can’t see where they’ve gotten this huge figure from.

The only thing I can think of is that the engineer for some reason took my gas meter reading as well, which is on a separate wall, and as noted, OVO are not my gas supplier.

This sounds disturbing. On the bill you’re having trouble deciphering, you should see long numbers for the meter(s) involved. Electricity supplies have an ID number, the MPAN, tied to the premises being supplied. Gas supplies similarly have an ID number called MPRN. There will in a domestic setting normally only be a single meter for a supply, and each meter has its own serial number - the MSN. Make a note of these somewhere, and then compare the MSNs with the numbers on the meters themselves. You can only be billed for consumption recorded by your meters.
