Hi @Iris , that’s your in home display (IHD) rather than the smart meter.
Occasionally they do lose connection with the smart meter but it may also be updating.
If you switch it off (and remove any batteries) then leave it off for at least 2 minutes before switching back on. You could also try to move the IHD closer to the smart meter.

I recall reading that the In Home Display that comes with a Smart Meter was portable/rechargeable and would let you see where most of your energy was being used.  The one I got yesterday only works with the mains and shows just total usage.  Have I been given ‘old stock’?

They are not all rechargable, some you need to put batteries in to use unplugged, and change them when they run out. (Mine is like that but I usually leave it plugged in anyway).

Here are links to a couple of guides to accessing the features and different screens for various IHD’s:

https://www.ovoenergy.com/guides/energy-guides/guide-for-smart-in-home-display-and-how-to-use-it

If yours isn’t covered there, or if you need extra help, then let us know what type of IHD you have, and/or post a photograph of it if and someone will be able to identify it and give more help.

Thanks, Nukecad.  The base of my IHD tells me it’s an IHD3 although it doesn’t have a battery level indicator as shown in the tutorial.  I’m guessing the IHD3 comes in battery and mains-only versions (my mains lead looks moulded to the unit).

The tutorial calls the IHD3 an ‘older version’.  You’d think a new Smart Meter would come with the current IHD...

Mmm. no battery level and a moulded in lead - can you post a photo?

You tend to get whatever IHD they have stock of at the time.

When I had my SMETS1 electricity meter changed to a new SMETS 2 meter last year they were out of stock of IHD’s altogether, and I had to wait a couple of months to get one for the new SMETS 2 meter. (My IHD is a GEO Trio).

PS. There are several videos on Youtube about using the Chameleon IHD3 which may help Videos showing things in action, even if not quite the same as yours, can sometimes be better than reading a manual.

Hi @andykelp, if you can justify an outlay of £70, the Glowmarkt (Glowmarkt.com) people have an excellent IHD/CAD (Consumer Access Device), although when I checked their website shop for the price just now I see it’s currently out of stock. You can register your interest, though.

My experience with it has been faultless, and great support from the Glowmarkt folk and the associated Bright team too.

A photo’s no problem, here you go, Nuke.  Thanks, Walty, but I’m not that bothered.  Just curious as to shy my new gizmo wasn’t the same as I’d read up on prior to the engineer coming.

The IHD-PPMID-AAA requires one AAA battery (not included).

That excrescence beside (behind in the picture) the power cable is where it goes; use a screwdriver or similar to remove the cover If you value your fingernail.

Thanks, Firedog, for the info and for expanding my vocabulary.  The power cable still appears to be moulded on so, if an AAA was inserted, you’d be carrying around the unit AND the plug.  They’ve not thought that through…  No big deal, though, as I can see me losing interest in the IHD soon and putting it in a drawer.

Agreed. Mine just sits on a little shelf in the kitchen and hasn’t moved since I got it. Since the current usage figure updates every 10 seconds, I’ve got plenty of time to check the display, switch something on or off and check it again when it changes. That wouldn’t necessarily be easy in a mansion, though, but it would keep you fit.

Don’t do that yet: learn what it can do and you might learn to love it. Mine is usually set to show the current power draw; one of the first things I noticed was just how greedy my little freezer is when its compressor starts up for a few minutes every half-hour or so. It makes me think that investing in a new one with a higher efficiency rating might give a good return.

Just to mention, it doesn't look like your IHD3 is old stock either. It's a 2024 unit so it's recent.

The battery slot on this variant is intended primarily for PAYG Customers so that they can reconnect the supply if they run out of credit.

The IHD6 and IHD7 are currently gold dust I'm afraid.

Hey @andrew0612,

Were you able to follow the steps on the guide that @BPLightlog shared? Let us know if you managed to get the in home display working 🙂

Hi, during use of my first electricity smart meter + in-home display (gas could apparently not be connected, for logistical reasons) with my previous energy supplier, I noticed discrepancies in displayed rates (higher) versus actual billing. Their technical team never gave me an explanation.

When I switched to OVO several years ago I kept my old in-home-display monitor and, again, electricity unit rates are consistently higher than my rates as per contract + billing. OVO's tech team did not remotely adjust or give clarification.

(I am aware that some monitor display "pages" show price incl. VAT, others not.)

I check my electricity consumption (+ usage in £s) on the monitor daily, knowing that it is in fact slightly lower (which my app info + bills confirm).

Why does the IHD not tally with my real consumption/unit rates?

Why does Ovo's tech team not adjust?

Why can I not have a gas smart meter installed, but must provide several own readings per month via the app. (Surely, technology has moved on enough that even old gas meters in kitchen cabinets can send readings through walls and doors!!?)

Any good techy info from Forum members? Or in fact from OVO themselves?

Thanks!

Hi @Sanka14 ,

To help us answer this one, please show us photos of everything you’ve got and what you’re seeing.

Once we see those, we’ll swing by again to see what we can suggest.

Thanks!

Hey @Sanka14

Some great advice from @Blastoise186 - if you’re able to upload a few photos of your meter and in home display, it helps us tailor the advice to the setup you have 😊
