Hey @bigchaoticgood

We don’t have access to accounts here at the Forum, so checking refunds isn’t something we’re able to do. These are common and have been confirmed as genuine comms from OVO, but if you’re ever unsure you can always contact the Support Team who’d be able to see if a refund has been processed on the account.

Please do let us know how you get on with this.

I've received an email from OVO re a refund on my old PAYG account (something to do with an Ombudsman decision) followed by another one from Paypoint telling me to click a link to get the refund transferred into my account.  Is this genuine?  I've since moved (2024) and there's a normal meter where I am now.  Thanks

That does sound like a phishing scam.

First- do not click that link.

Second- check the email header (headers if you got more than one) to see where it actually came from.

Third- if you do click the link DO NOT GIVE YOUR BANKING DETAILS IF IT ASKS FOR THEM.

Any energy company would send you a cheque for a refund rather than asking for your bank account derails.

Thanks for your reply.  The email address it came from was no-reply@ecomms.ovoenergy.com. How do I know that it's a genuine one?

The “ecomms.” bit does not look right to me at all.

It looks like a common tactic of those who pretend to be a genuine website.

I have flagged your query for the OVO staff to look at so I would wait for their reply before doing anything.

Obviously they usually work business hours so it may be tomorrow before one of them replies.

Did the email from Paypoint have a similar looking address?

As I recall there were some genuine PAYG refunds a few years ago, but there have also been many scams so you need to be careful.

This is the Paypoint email address no-reply@paypointsvp.com.  There was something in various papers early June about OVO being made to reimburse people by the Imbudsman.

I received the same email, I haven't been a customer since 2024 either. Had spelling mistakes and missing words, but had the correct account number and the email address it came from is legit apparently.

Had a Google and it looks like it's a real thing, if you can, dig out your old account number, see if they match. I haven't had the PayPoint email, just says I'll receive my payment within 10 days. No idea how, as they didn't have my bank details as I was on prepayment... Google says its either £2.77m, or £3.8m that they have to pay out to customers who were affected, with roughly 11,600 customers receiving it, I don't know how correct those numbers are though.

I've just checked the ecomms email address and it is the one they use to send me my monthly bills.  I just pay on demand as I don't trust them with a DD, so they probably don't have my bank details. I'm still with OVO but not PAYG now.  I've had a new account number since I moved 2 years ago, and have no record of my old one.  The PP email also says I can download a voucher to exchange at a PayPoint and get cash.  Whilst I'd rather have it paid into my bank, I feel the voucher may be the safer option

Does it say how much the compensation is? I can't find any data other than £40. Surprised, that if you're still a customer, they haven't just taken it off your current bill!
