We are new to solar panels and have received only 2 payments so far, very disappointing does anyone else have a problem with how much they are generating and who should I contact!

Great question to ask about your new solar panels, we’d love to help make sure you’re getting paid for that lovely solar energy. 🌞

The answer to this one will depend on when your solar panels were installed and registered with an export supporting energy supplier.

Before April 2019 and registered for the Feed-in Tariff?  You’ll be paid for both the energy you generate and the energy you export, so you’ll have a separate generation meter. The export reading can either be clocked by an export meter/smart meter or ‘deemed’ whereby we calculate it based on your generation reading.

After April 2019 the Feed-in Tariff was replaced by the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). This payment only covers energy you actually export which is clocked by your smart meter.

If you’ve got your FIT or SEG registered with us, we request the relevant readings at the end of each quarter (March, June, September, December) and you’ll receive your statement and payment for that quarter within 8 weeks. You’re able to submit any FiT or SEG generation / export reading directly with OVO’s support team, who can add it to an internal form and send it to the right team.

How to get in touch with the FiT/SEG team

If you need to speak to our team about your Feed-in Tariff you can call 0330 102 7421 Monday - Friday from 9am to 5pm or email via fits@ovoenergy.com.

If you need to speak to us about your Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) you can call 0330 102 7421 Monday - Friday from 9am to 5pm or email via seg@ovoenergy.com.

The MPAN required is different to that used for an import .. even if it’s the same meter being used.
Perhaps that’s the issue.
Even with an Export MPAN assigned, with any export tariff, your supplier will need to view permission given by your DNO - even if it was issued some time ago

Does this advice help @scrounger? Did you manage to get through?

We had our PV/battery system installed by OVO Solar back in May, had confirmation that SEG has all been set up and the first reading should’ve been taken in September but I haven’t seen any sign of the first payment into our OVO account either in the app or on the website account portal.

Does anyone have any experience in how long it takes to get the initial payment through?  I’ve tried emailing export@ovo.com a few times but haven’t had any response.

That sounds like the wrong email address - you actually want seg@ovoenergy.com . Alternatively, try calling 0330 303 5063 and ask for the SEG Team.

Thanks for the info, I’ll try those contact details tomorrow.  The email address I’ve tried is the one mentioned in the SEG confirmation email I received from OVO.

One other thing to consider .. I’m not aware of any export tariff being shown online. They might have changed things now they’ve been installing themselves but all export used to be totally separate from your energy account.
Incidentally, from the info here, the SEG email is as Blastoise suggests

Hi..I’m new to the FIT..ive just submitted my readings and there’s only about 500 difference in 6 months..end of June export was4483..and today it’s 4986..is that unusally low..can’t see that generating much of a payment!

Hi @Ricardo54  That figure doesn’t sound too low, if you're talking solely about the Export proportion of your generation : my own TOTAL Generation figures (in NE England) were 900-odd kWh submitted September, and 300-odd submitted December, which would make for an imputed figure allowed for Export of around 600 kWh, not that far from your own Export figure.

If you’re on the FiT (“Feed in Tariff”) payments scheme, then its TOTAL generation you get paid for quarterly (with some extra pennies for an assumed Export total, usually 50% of the total generated). It doesn’t really matter how much of your renewables your house consumes, as the Export figure is imputed. Did you miss submitting a quarterly reading in September?

If you’re on the newer SEG (“Smart Export Guarantee”) I think you only get paid for the renewable kWh that you export, and that does require you to submit accurate Export figures.

So, be careful whether you’re talking about export as opposed to overall generation. I assume we’re talking domestic PV panels in the UK (SEG can be claimed by businesses as well as domestic).

I’m happy to let you have the exact figures I submitted and the exact payment I received for Sep and for Dec if that helps you for comparison purposes between your production and my own fairly modest generation figures. I’ve been on the FIT scheme for 11 years, not familiar with the SEG scheme, though.

All the very best, let us know….

Walt. 2013: 3.2kW PV East/West + Fronius IG, >26MWh (of which, to date mid-2025, 20MWh exported). 2023: 2.4kWh LiFePo4 battery. 2024: Tadö wireless smart stat v3; Electriq split unit 2.6kW AAHP (“air conditioner”).

Hi.thanks for the reply..yes its the FIT we are on..inherited the system when we bought the house..it took ages for changevof ownership to be settled that’s why it’s our first reading..if you could message me your exact paym3nts for your readings that would b3 great..thank you

I FIT

Hi @Ricardo54, the initial hassle involved with your efforts to get your FIT payments up and running will be well worth it, I can promise you. Such a shame any new FIT installations scheme were dropped years ago.

Absolutely no problem about posting a summary of my FIT figures from June to December publicly on here, it’s always of interest to see different generation figures for different installs and for different regions of the country…I’m up in Sunderland, so during the six winter months our daily rooftop generation can be as low as zero (very rarely, thankfully!), averaging between 1 and 2 kWh in the worst months Dec and Jan. it’s surprising how steeply the performance figures increase for the Nov and Feb. months  and you can readily see the difference between the three quarterly payments listed here for June to December 2024.  I keep a daily record of all my generation and export figures. The FIT deemed export figure of 50% is wildly inaccurate: unless you take active steps to harvest more of your generation for your own use you’ll find you export a lot more than 50%!

Unfortunately my figures have all been logged by good old pen and ink, maybe one day I’ll get around to a spreadsheet record.  I’d strongly advise you to do the same, while your figures are still in their neo-natal stage! Daily patterns of usage are very interesting, especially if you have yet to explore any storage battery options? But the actual FIT payments are easily recorded as you get a quarterly confirmation email of your statement.

FIT payments vary slightly depending on how early in the scheme one registers, so my own payment figures might be slightly different from yours, but won’t be wildly different in principle. For example, every April the payments increase slightly as there’s an inflationary element built into the FIT scheme; because of this the 1st June statement at first glance seem slightly complicated as the June payment contains both the pre-increase kWh rate and the post-increase kWh rate.

Just a note on your original post @Ricardo54 .

As has been mentioned, for FIT you need to use the reading from your generation meter, as you should be paid on the amount generated, not just exported. The generation meter will be entirely separate from your electricity meter and could be in a number of locations (mine is in the garage near my inverter).

You mention export to begin with which is why I think you may be looking at the wrong reading. Of course, the generation level will depend on your location as well as your system specifications.
Other considerations are things like a solar diverter which might have been fitted to help heat your water. That would reduce any exports but not impinge on your generation.
