Can anyone explain what’s going on here?

Opening balance was £335, we used around £90 worth of electric/gas combined (£66 government payment was taken off this, hence the £22 charge), I paid £150 so by my reckoning the balance should have gone up by around £125.

It hasn’t though - they seem to have then deducted the £66 again.

Does anyone know why? Do I need to contact them or will it right itself?

Can you see you monthly summary online @Mocha ?

You should see a heading

Then details of your energy charges

Then another part

and under that a line for the government payment

Which is an amount taken off your bill.
You might need to look at the last few months to see it all

Should I be able to see this on the app?

@Mocha yes, click on

—Payments

—See charges and payments

(Scroll down to see each recent monthly period)

—See details

Have a look at each month back to the beginning of October as there may be two £66 or £67 in one month depending on the date it goes in or out.

I was moved from SSE to OVO 1/12/2022. As with many of the commentators I found it confusing at first but reading Blastoise 186 did help. At one point I think he says this is the best system that OVO is using. Prior to migrating to OVO, SSE used to put the Energy Support payment directly into my bank account, leaving no cause for ambiguity. I would suggest OVO use that same method, as in my migration information it does state I would need to do nothing and everything would stay the same. Well it appears that is not the case.

Unfortunately, it’s too late for any energy supplier to change strategy now. Between the fact there’s only three/four payments left to make and the effort involved in switching the strategy and the additional chaos it’d cause… It’s not worth doing this time around.

It’s possible that lessons will be learned for the future though.

I would suggest OVO use that same method, as in my migration information it does state I would need to do nothing and everything would stay the same. Well it appears that is not the case.

In fairness to OVO, that guidance and advice was written something like two years ago and was well before anyone had even dreamed up the EBSS Scheme. It would have been impossible to predict the future at the time and the spirit of what it said and meant still holds true.

Thanks i’ll check this out I’ve also been sent a full breakdown via email to look at too

I pay £185 direct debit per month, yet my account is only being credited with £118! Are they taking the government payment off my direct debit? This will mean I'm not paying enough to cover costs

Hi Clare, my £67 is paid into my bank account. It’s a strange way of doing it but it works out ok for me.

But why if I'm paying £185 is only £118 being given credited to my account?

Not sure Clare, if in doubt ask then to up it to £185, you should get the £67 in your bank account so in really you are paying £118.

@clare1970 could you show where you are seeing this ?

Are you getting £67 paid into your bank account. I get mines about the 7th of the month. That’s about a week after my DD is taken out.

Yes the £67 goes into my bank, but why are they giving me my own money back, leaving my payments short?

It’s crazy how they do it, my DD is £126 and that is what they take from me.

I see it now . Think I need some electric heaters ! Thank you

Be careful, electricity is almost 3x more expensive than gas

Update.. ignore this

Can you show the summary of charges on your detailed bill ? There ought to be the full direct debit amount shown somewhere there. The government payment appears as a negative charge so reduces the Charge figure. Your bill format isn’t the same as mine.

Your right Juliamc, but the £67 which is shown as a negative should be paid into your bank account. This balances it out

Sorry to but in @clare1970 , @garrpeters but you should try not to include private details here as it is a public forum.
You can edit things for a time after posting but it’s probably too late here so I’ve asked a mod to edit

Thank you BP 🤓

Thank you

I am sure it has been covered by others explanation but I still fail to understand while £67 refund is shown on my bill.

There are three players. A is the Government. B is OVO. C is me.

Starting Balance say £200

  1. A gives B  £67 for them to pass to C.
  2.  B puts this £67 in to C’s bank account.
  3. Effect. C has an extra £67 from the Gov. whilst B has zero effect on its balances as it has operated purely as a conduit.
  4. B calculates  Cs  bill for the month at £100  and adds a debit (Called Refund) for the £67 that B moved to Cs account. Monthly Bill total £167
  5. B deducts  £167  from Cs  opening balance which leaves £33 credit.
  6. Effect as far as I can see is:-  C has paid £167 for a £100 Bill. B has been paid £167 for a £100 Bill. The only possible saving for C is if the original £100 Bill had had it price/unit capped in someway. However, the charged price per unit for power on the Bill is that given in OVOs Contract to me.
  7. Please Explain where I have got it wrong.

A gives B £67

B places it in C’s energy account as a reduction from C’s charges

C unaware of this

C needs to look in Charges detail to see it

C sees it and is happy 😊

Hi Jullamc. Thanks, not sure what you are saying but will look as suggested. Anything to be “happy”.
