Do OVO offer 3 phase smart meters?

3 phase (aka polyphase) installations in domestic properties are few and far between, so it's a minority of meter engineers across the country that have the skills required to complete these installations. There are also some technical challenges in making sure your job is allocated to an engineer with these skills but we are just as keen as you are to have Smart available for these sites ASAP, so if you would like to take part in this beta stage release, please consider the steps below:

If you have a single rate 3 phase meter (i.e. not Economy 7 / 2-rate etc.) we would encourage you to book a smart meter appointment as normal online or over the phone on 0330 303 5063.

This will then go through to a specialist team who will validate that it is single rate job and that an 3 phase engineer is available in your region. If this is the case, they will re-book your appointment with the right engineer. (So please bear in mind your appointment date/time will likely change, but we'll try to keep it the same where possible.)

Unfortunately, if you have a 2-rate meter or are not in an area covered by our current crop of 3 phase skilled engineers, you will need to continue with your heritage meter. We know this will be frustrating, so we are sorry about that, we are working to expand our coverage and by you flagging your interest to us, you are helping us shape where and when that coverage develops. - thank you!

Yep I’d agree with the above, @tomwbo. OVO can’t take on business supplies. uSwitch for business might be helpful for you.

If you were a domestic customer we can take on 3 phase supplies and 3 phase smart meters. We are replacing non-smart 3 phase with smart but we have limited engineer coverage at this point.

Hi, I live in Somerset and have been advised that I need to move to a 3 phase supply.  National grid have given me a quote but I can’t find an electricity supplier to fit a 3 Phase meter.  Any help gratefully received.

OVO do fit three-phase meters, but it’s a bit of a lottery. There just aren’t enough meter engineers trained to deal with 3ph arrangements which are much more complex than ordinary ones, and to get one of them to turn up on the same day as NG (it all has to happen simultaneously if you’re not to be left without power) is challenging, to say the least. Of course you’d have to be an OVO customer to take part in the lottery.

Just butting in here… has the 3 phase  been suggested by a heat pump installer ? There is a tendency for some installers to unnecessarily oversize the HP thereby needing the 3 phase supply.
Apologies if it’s nothing to do with that.

Hi @Elizabeth99,

It seems our forum volunteer Firedog has already stopped by with some good advice here.

Hi I have an ASHP and a 3phase supply but no 3phase smart meter at the moment. I am keen to join Ovo energy for their ASHP tariffs however that requires a smart meter. I have rang ovo and they have told me that they don’t fit 3phase smart meters. Is that correct? It is very frustrating as without it I can’t make the most of the lower electricity tariffs???

can anyone from ovo help or has an ovo customers had a 3phase meter installed?

I joined ovo this week after speaking to several different energy companies regarding getting a 3phase smart meter fitted. I was told my several different people from ovo that if I joined ovo I would be able to get a 3 phase smart meter appointment within a week or so and that there was no delay in getting appointments. After joining I rang the appointments team only to be told that I cannot book an appointment until all of my details have been updated to the systems which could take up to 6 weeks. I am so disappointed as I was promised an appointment within a few days of joining. I cannot make the most of the lower energy tariffs until I get a smart meter so I am stuck with paying high tariffs and false promises made!!!!

Six weeks is the industry norm for completing a switch. It’s been that way for over two decades.

Engineers from ALL Suppliers are also working flat out on RTS → Smart Meter upgrades right now, so Three-Phase jobs are temporarily low priority at the moment.

A 3 phase smart meter is not a simple fit as it requires specialist engineers.
It would be interesting to hear where you got the information about such a quick appointment as I’ve not heard that for a standard smart meter yet alone a 3 phase version.
