I'm switching away from OVO, why is there a delay for my final bill?

Hello,

Had anyone experienced leaving OVO because of joining another energy company and not be able to get final bill for more than two months? I am still getting charged for gas and electricity they don’t supply, and when I was trying to get my final bill, they asked me to wait for 6 weeks to sort it out, nothing had been done, after contacting them after 7 weeks after I joined another energy supplier, they asked me to wait 32 working days more. I’ve never experienced anything like this, now paying to two energy suppliers at the same time, which is ridiculous in my opinion and shameful for OVO.

Hey @Elena Wilson,

Sorry for the issues you’re having,

Usually when you switch suppliers, we’ll receive the information we need from your new supplier and issue a final statement within 6 weeks of your switch date. If you’ve got a credit balance, once the final statement has been issued, this’ll be automatically refunded and be back in your bank account no longer than 10 days after you get the final statement.

What can slow down my switch, and how will delays be resolved?

Most switches go smoothly, without any hiccups. But, occasionally, there might be a delay – and it’s likely to be from one of these things:

1. Your meter readings might take longer than normal to be validated

When you sign up to your new supplier, they’ll ask for your electricity and gas opening readings. They’ll also get your readings checked against the meter readings from us.

These checks are carried out by different companies, which means that when your validated readings are returned to them and your new supplier, they might not come back together. This can lead to a delayed first statement on one of your fuels. And if the figures don’t match, it can lead to a reading dispute.

2. Your meter details or address might be wrong

It might be that they’re missing one of your meter numbers, or haven't got your full address.

3. You might have had an erroneous transfer

They’ll use the national database to find your meter details, so they switch the right person. They should send these to you to check. If you forget and they don't match, they might transfer someone else by mistake. This is called an erroneous transfer. You can find out more about erroneous transfers in our help page.

4. You've built up a debt

If you owe us money, we may reject or block your switch, which will lead to a delay.

You can find out more about the switching process here. If you haven’t had your final bill within 6 weeks, you may be entitled to compensation. You can find out more on the OFGEM website.

Hope this helps.

Can someone please help. I've contacted email support and they said.  Normally the process will take around 4 to 6 weeks from the date we ended the supply and we will be sending it out to your email address. As per record, that was dated 19.09.2024. Rest assured it will be available the soonest possible time.

I've had confirmation that the meter readings were accepted.

You have taken a further £230 and now you have close to £800 of my money. It's over 6 weeks and approaching Christmas, please can you sort?

Hey @jtcsmith

Sorry to hear about this.

It’s hard to know what’s causing the delay as we don’t have access to accounts here at the Forum. It’ll be best to get in touch with the Support Team again, you can chat with the team via live chat instead of email. They’ll be able to check the account and see what’s happening with the switch.

We’ve got a similar topic which I’ve linked to below that may also be helpful:

Hi @Sukhy ,

If you only just provided a Final Reading, try giving it more time! It may take up to six weeks to get it processed.

If that doesn’t help, please contact OVO via https://ovoenergy.com/help .

Unfortunately it’s been longer than 6 weeks. No response to emails spoke to support and gave them reading as well

In that case, you should try Live Chat at https://ovoenergy.com/feedback - it’s 10x faster than Email in most cases.

Otherwise, try https://ovoenergy.com/feedback .

Hey @Sukhy

Sorry to hear of your final bill delay.

It could be due to a number of reasons. Have you moved out or switched to a new supplier at the same property?

Sometimes it’s due to a meter readings discrepancy.

OVO is the new British Gas. It's been about 4 months for me and still not sorted. Received the £25 apology cheque mandated my ofgem for them not doing it within the timeframe and have heard nothing for months.

Hi @jtcsmith

Sorry to hear about this.

We don’t have access to accounts here at the Forum so we can’t know what’s causing the delay. Do you know if you have a complaint handler assigned to the case?

If you’ve still not received a final statement and it’s been over 6 weeks since your switch, reach out to our Support Team, who can check what’s caused the delay and may be able to offer a partial refund in advance of your final statement.

I am extremely disappointed with how OVO has handled the closure of my electricity account.

My account was closed on 17 July 2026 when I moved out. On that same day, OVO confirmed to me in writing that:

  • my account had been closed;
  • no final meter reading was required because the property has a smart meter;
  • my final bill would be issued within 6 weeks; and
  • any remaining credit would then be refunded.

That six-week deadline expired on 28 August 2026.

It is now 2 October 2026.

I have still received:

  • no final bill;
  • no refund of the credit balance;
  • no GSOP compensation for the missed final-billing deadline; and
  • no acknowledgement of my formal complaint submitted on 28 September.

This is not a minor delay anymore. OVO has had more than ten weeks since my account was closed, despite having already confirmed that no further meter reading was needed from me.

What is particularly frustrating is that I have done everything required on my side. The account was closed, the meter is smart, OVO confirmed the process in writing, and I have already raised a formal complaint. Yet I still have no final bill, no refund, and no complaint reference.

At this point, I would like OVO to explain:

  1. Why has my final bill still not been issued more than 10 weeks after account closure?
  2. Why has the credit on my account still not been refunded?
  3. Why has the applicable GSOP compensation not been paid?
  4. Why has my formal complaint not even been acknowledged?
  5. What exactly is preventing OVO from completing what should be a straightforward account closure?

I would appreciate it if an OVO moderator could escalate this to the relevant billing or complaints team urgently.

I can provide my account details privately if required, but I will not post personal information publicly.

If this remains unresolved, I intend to escalate the matter further through OVO’s CEO complaints route and the Energy Ombudsman as soon as I am eligible to do so.

This has already gone far beyond what I consider a reasonable delay.
