Can I switch my smart meters to half hourly readings?

I had SMETS2 gas and electricity meter a installed a couple of weeks ago.

So far so good, however I’m wondering if / how I can switch them to 30 minute reads? I’d like more granularity on the usage data ideally.

Also, I’m finding the gas readings are very binary; maybe because it’s summer and we are not using a lot, but it seems to be counting in chunks - e.g one day we will use nothing, then we’ll use a set amount, the next day it’s exactly the same amount. This seems a bit odd.

Great to hear about your new smart meters and brilliant question to ask about making sure these are set to send us your usage data half hourly.

When make your smart meter appointment we ask you to select a reading schedule, which decides how often we receive a reading from your meter. This can be set on a monthly, daily or half-hourly schedule - we’ll install your meter in the option you selected.

You can check whether your usage data is being received on a half-hourly basis by heading to the ‘usage’ pages of your online account or OVO app (download for Android or iOS). The ‘daily’ tab will show half-hourly data if this is being received.

If you’d like to change the frequency we’re receiving your smart meter readings once the meter’s been installed, log into your online account or app and click ‘Profile’ (or the person icon on your App home screen). Then, click 'how often meter reads send' and select your chosen read schedule. We’d always recommend that half-hourly is the best, as it gives you the most detailed online usage breakdown.

Reach out to our Support Team to request this change if you’re unable to do it online or on the app. If your meters are already set to send us half-hourly readings but you’re not able to view this on your ‘usage’ pages this could indicate a communication issue with your meter. In which case it’s worth carrying out a smart meter health check for your meter type below and contact our Support Team with the results:

SMETS1 Secure Smart Meter Health Check

SMETS2 Smart Meter Health Check

We’ve got a great Forum topic about identifying smart meter issues on your online account / app, and there’s also a smart meter troubleshooting guide on our website here.

The readings from the gas meter appear on the account on the 18th of every month labelled "smart".

The gas meter is a Liberty EG4v11.

The Liberty EG4v11 is a SMETS1 (older type) smartmeter, and as you say that the bills say “smart” that tells you/us that it has been migrated to DCC and is communicating sucessfully.

So my possible concerns were unfounded and it should simply now be a question of getting the help of support to give it a remote ‘poke’ telling it to send readings daily.

Just for info a video showing how to take a reading (if you can reach it) as you say it should be button 6: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0UNd98w3rI&t=4s

PS. As the meter is communicating then it’s probably not due for a replacement now until at least 2028

I said, Hey - Watts going on.

Hi @ClaireL, @Nukecad is right here, and if the Support Team have any issues they can follow the steps I’ve mentioned above about changing the read schedule twice in BoL, and this should fix things hopefully.

Let us know how you get on.

It took us a while to get round to phoning in, but my son spoke to a very helpful support person on the phone yesterday. The gas meter sent a smart reading overnight which is now showing on his account (3 days before its usual monthly reading) so it looks like it's sorted. Thanks everyone for the help!
