Want to know more about Power Move Flex?

Updated on 15/01/26 by Abby_OVO

Over the 18 months, Power Move Flex (as part of CrowdFlex) has shifted 864,700 kWh's and paid out over £1.02 million in bill credits.

We've had over 100,000 customers take part over the 3 trials in which Power Move Flex helped match the demand to the power being generated. So homed used cleaner, greener energy.

The trials were aimed at understanding how households can contribute to a greener electricity grid. The learnings we gathered from being part of these trials will be essential for the Electricity System Operator to plan for the future of the electricity grid, and how our customers can play a role in this.

Together we've been making energy better for people and the planet.

There are currently no active trials. More information on Power Move can be found here:

Power Move Flex is a series of events that can earn you credit when you shift your energy use to greener times of the day.

It’s all part of the CrowdFlex project, sponsored by energy regulator OFGEM and electricity grid operator ESO.

Working with industry leaders, the goal is to manage the demand on the grid – and change the future of energy.

How does Power Move Flex work?

At peak times of the day, like around 7pm, there are high levels of demand on the energy grid. By nature, renewable energy sources like wind and solar power can be unpredictable. So this demand on the grid doesn’t always match how much renewable power is being generated. And when there’s not enough to go around, dirtier, carbon-heavy fossil fuel gets used to fill the gap.

Power Move Flex helps match the demand to the power being generated. So your home uses cleaner, greener energy. The aim is to shift your electricity activities into certain time slots – not to use more than normal.

Can I take part?

Power Move Flex is open to eligible OVO pay monthly customers. You’ll also need to have a smart meter set to half hourly smart meter readings. You can update your meter readings via your online account.

We’ve been inviting eligible customers to sign up via email and we’ll let you know if you’ve successfully joined. Unfortunately there are limited spaces and we can’t guarantee a space.

We’ll also randomly select a "control group" who won’t take part in any events. This means there’s a chance you won’t be rewarded. To find out more see our FAQs below.

Terms and conditions apply. Please read them here.

See here for Frequently Asked Questions for trial one on the CrowdFlex project.

If you are a pensioner who keeps most of your gas and electric off as much as possible ? Is it worth joining Power Move? I did a power up the other day for an hour , which cost me 45p but only was credited 1p to my account ?

That is a question only you can answer. Presumably that 45p worth of electricity you would have used anyway at another time, so is 1p worth it to you.

It really depends on your usage patterns and the potential to shift your consumption to away from the 4PM to 7PM peak window.

I use very little energy and for nine months of the year Power Move effectively covers all of my metered energy charges - or, viewed another way, gives me 40p of free energy per day to use outside of peak - leaving me to pay for the just the standing charges.

I am confused about the 1p credit though as the credits have not yet been applied for October's Power Move.

I have found power move and excellent way to earn money every month, I make sure that I do washing drying and cooking at the hours not included in the power move, at the moment 4pm until 7pm, as a pensioner I find it easy to avoid using large amounts of electricity during those hours, as it's based on a percentage of what you use it seems to work even though I don't have large bills,

I think the clue is in the name .. if you use next to nothing during peak times then you won’t be earning much (but helping reduce emissions anyway), but if you can shift some of your usage out of peak times then it’s certainly worth trying .. it costs nothing apart from a bit of thought

It depends entirely on lifestyle, number of people in the property, etc.etc. I am living off a pension but am a low user, I live alone. Therefore the cash rewards for Power Up and Power Down are pennies because of the way it is calculated. There is another thing I’d like to mention though, anyone my age or older would be well aware of not using standby, pulling plugs out of the wall, using appliances out of peak times and so on and have probably been doing it for decades. Of course we are also aware of looking after the pennies because they turn into pounds so we will take the pennies with thanks.

From what was said about “power up” and the reward gained in the original post here I believe this is regarding Power Move Flex and not the monthly based Power Move.

I said, Hey - Watts going on.

A pensioner here too. We joined the power move flex 5 weeks ago. Over the first 3 weeks we earnt £1.99 in power ups and downs, we missed doing them on week 4. I haven't looked at how much this "cost" because it was all things that I would have done anyway but at a different time eg I didn't do a wash load when I would normally but did it during a power move up time, if there was a power down I waited until after it had ended to switch on the dishwasher. So there was no cost as I would have done these things anyway.  It's about moving the time you do things, turning things off won't help, unplugging standbys are really negligible when it comes to power move ups and downs. Have you also joined the power move on the app, avoiding use of what you can between 4pm and 7pm (the peak time) and doing those things off peak? You can join both and run them in tandem.

Maybe I have just missed something but I can’t understand how I am going to save money by using more energy when there is a power up event . Surely I still have to pay for the power I have used during it ?

Hi @Gazz64 ,

In future, please post this in the Power Move Flex group if it’s Power Move Flex related. I will arrange for this thread to be moved shortly. You’ll find it under this link after that: https://forum.ovoenergy.com/groups/power-move-flex-trial-165

The idea is that for a Power Up event, you move usage into that slot that you would have used anyway but at another time of day, thus preventing your costs from increasing and maximising any rewards.
