Want to know more about Power Move Flex?

Updated on 15/01/26 by Abby_OVO

Over the 18 months, Power Move Flex (as part of CrowdFlex) has shifted 864,700 kWh's and paid out over £1.02 million in bill credits.

We've had over 100,000 customers take part over the 3 trials in which Power Move Flex helped match the demand to the power being generated. So homed used cleaner, greener energy.

The trials were aimed at understanding how households can contribute to a greener electricity grid. The learnings we gathered from being part of these trials will be essential for the Electricity System Operator to plan for the future of the electricity grid, and how our customers can play a role in this.

Together we've been making energy better for people and the planet.

There are currently no active trials. More information on Power Move can be found here:

Power Move Flex is a series of events that can earn you credit when you shift your energy use to greener times of the day.

It’s all part of the CrowdFlex project, sponsored by energy regulator OFGEM and electricity grid operator ESO.

Working with industry leaders, the goal is to manage the demand on the grid – and change the future of energy.

How does Power Move Flex work?

At peak times of the day, like around 7pm, there are high levels of demand on the energy grid. By nature, renewable energy sources like wind and solar power can be unpredictable. So this demand on the grid doesn’t always match how much renewable power is being generated. And when there’s not enough to go around, dirtier, carbon-heavy fossil fuel gets used to fill the gap.

Power Move Flex helps match the demand to the power being generated. So your home uses cleaner, greener energy. The aim is to shift your electricity activities into certain time slots – not to use more than normal.

Can I take part?

Power Move Flex is open to eligible OVO pay monthly customers. You’ll also need to have a smart meter set to half hourly smart meter readings. You can update your meter readings via your online account.

We’ve been inviting eligible customers to sign up via email and we’ll let you know if you’ve successfully joined. Unfortunately there are limited spaces and we can’t guarantee a space.

We’ll also randomly select a "control group" who won’t take part in any events. This means there’s a chance you won’t be rewarded. To find out more see our FAQs below.

Terms and conditions apply. Please read them here.

See here for Frequently Asked Questions for trial one on the CrowdFlex project.

Please can we have some more information about the calculation of how much power is shifted? How is the comparison base line normal usage calculated? Is it averaged over some period of time, etc.

How will this work with EV Charge Anytime? Will the charger handle the power shift and would that be included in the calculation of power shifted compared to average usage?

As far as I’m aware, Charge Anytime will try to avoid running a charge during Power Down event and will try to maximise charging during a Power Up event, in order to help you achieve the goals. Any power used/saved as a result WILL count towards Power Move Flex goals.

This integration is automatic - you don’t need to do anything special to make it work.

This ^^

I received the below from OVO, but it makes no reference to my baseline/target and how the calcs are performed… For example, if they think I’m only using 1/10th of a kWh over this period, is my max rewards 5pence for having everything off. The power move events had a target/ baseline.

You’ll receive £0.50 credit towards your energy bill for every kWh you shift.

Hey @supercitybity @unknownuser01,

Thank you for your feedback & questions.

I’ve forwarded them on to the team & will get back to you with an update 😊

Hey @supercitybity @unknownuser01,

For Power Down events, we calculate your baseline using ESO’s methodology: For working days (Mon - Fri excluding bank holidays) – your baseline is calculated using the half hourly electricity usage data taken from your smart meter over the last 10 working days before an event. Days where there’s been a Power Move or Power Move Plus event won’t count towards the target. You must have at least 5 working days worth of data for a target to be calculated.

For non-working days (Saturday, Sunday & bank holidays) – your baseline is calculated using the half hourly electricity usage data taken from your smart meter over the last 4 non-working days. Days where there’s been a Power Move or Power Move Plus won’t count towards the target. You must have at least 4 non-working days worth of data for a target to be calculated. For Power Up events, there will be a zero baseline on consumption.

For Charge Anytime, we will automatically control the charger in line with the events. Charge Anytime already does this, and charges when the grid is greenest, so there's effectively no change to the method of charging we just won't charge the vehicle in a Power Down event, and may charge it in a Power Up event, which they'd be rewarded for.

^^ Thank you. As my average values over the day are greatly skewed as I have solar, the the baseline will be off as well. I don’t think this makes sense for me, unless its using more power and in this case I probably can by cooking.

That’s really helpful feedback @supercitybity, I’m going to pass that on to the team so they can make improvements, we want power move flex to be more accessible to different groups of customers.

I have had an email to say Power Move Flex 2 is starting from the 7th October and I am on the waiting list. I have had no notifications of any Power up or down events yet.

In addition I have been selected for the control group so I am assuming I should get event notifications.

Have any events taken place yet? Maybe not!

Hey @Sparky64

So sorry you never got a response to your question.

From September we started inviting eligible customers to the next series of Power Up events (when there’s low demand on the grid) and Power Down events (when there’s high demand on the grid). Like last time, you’ll earn credit for every kWh of electricity you shift above or below your normal use.

For more information on the next series of Power Move Flex, please visit Power Move Flex or view our updated FAQs. You can also read more about this on our dedicated topic:

Sorry again for such a delay in an answer here, hopefully this helps.
