There have been trials of dual-mode communication hubs going on for some time, but there is undoubtedly a variety of hardware being tested. It will be fascinating to hear how it goes with you: squeaky wheels come to mind. “Octopus told us that it had in fact decided to break the rules and fix his meter by connecting it to the mobile network.“ (Energy smart meter issues creating north-south divide - BBC News). I wonder if @Retroanaconda has pestered his MSP or the minister responsible Alasdair Allan?

It looks like Shetland had been chosen to kick off a revised drive to complete the smart meter/RTS removal roll out, presumably they now believe they have all the hardware  available to complete the installs whether using the Arqiva signal or one of the other solutions they can now use.

Thanks for your updates everyone - sounds like their may be some light at the end of the tunnel here. @monster9 please do keep us updated as to how the appointment goes on 30/04, we’d appreciate it, thank you!

I have not no. I am waiting for all the RTS stuff to be done before trying again as I imagine all focus is on that at the moment.

My appointment for 4g cellular Smart Meter installation has been cancelled - for a second time.

  • Original appointment made on 04 April for installation on 10 April was cancelled on 05 April
  • Subsequent appointment made on 08-April for installation on 30 April was cancelled on 25 April

A pattern is beginning to emerge.

Ovo complaints dept are unable to tell me the reason this most recent appointment has been cancelled.

They will alert their Customer Resolution Specialist. I look forward to their call.

The earlier 10 April appointment was cancelled as their system determined that I sat outside the Smart Meter WAN - so a Smart Meter would not function.

But the whole point of the appointment was to install a Smart Meter that doesn’t rely on the traditional Smart Meter WAN, and that uses 4g cellular comms instead.

It beggars belief.

Hello Everyone!!

Yes we are now installing South/Central Comms Hubs in the northern CSP region! Incredible!

Looking likely previous no WAN appointments will be reopened up to be attempted again!!

I’m happy to report that, as of yesterday, I am now the owner of a working 4G cellular Smart Meter!

The commissioning of the meter was a bit fiddly – one of the components had to be re-sited in order to pick up the cellular signal (poor signal here in the Highlands), but once resolved the meter registered and commissioned itself without issue.

I’ll keep an eye on it over the coming days.

To be honest, I’m in shock that this 2+ year odyssey now appears to be resolved - and keep staring at the meter in disbelief!!!

It’s likely that this cellular solution will resolve the RTS switch-off issues for thousands of users in the Highlands, if it can be rolled-out in time.

That is great news - congratulations!

I wonder if you could elaborate on this a bit. The normal set-up is for the Communications Hub (CH) to be intimately connected to the meter, i.e. fixed on top of it. In some situations, e.g. if the meter is in a metal box, this isn’t good news for communications, in which case it’s possible to move the CH up to 1.5m away and attach it to the meter by a flying lead. Another mitigation involves connecting an external antenna to the CH to capture the WAN signal. So, which ‘component’ was re-sited?

As always, photos of your new toy would be very welcome!

Hopefullly this innovation is not going to be restricted to Shetland, and 4G coms hubs can now be an option for other Northern installations where Long Range Radio doesn't quite reach the spot.

AFAIK the restriction was just policy anyway and not for any technical reason. (Basically so that engineers didn't have to carry both types of coms hub? Even Luke seems surprised/amazed to see 4G hubs finally being officially deployed in the North).

Dual coms hubs will obviously help as they become available after the current testing.

Of course there are still going to be some places that cannot get either Long Range Radio or 4G signal.

Satellite broadband coms hub maybe? Don't hold your breath, but if there is a will to overcome the broadband security concerns (and a development budget) then no reason why not.

Hey @monster9

Thank you for popping back with that amazing update!

We’re all so pleased to see that’s finally been resolved and the appointment was a success.

Thank you for your patience though out all of the waiting for a solution. I know it wasn’t a smooth journey to get here, but I’m really pleased it’s ended in success, and will hopefully be a great solution for others in similar circumstances.

If you do ever have any other questions, always feel free to pop back any time.😊

@Firedog

That’s exactly what the engineer did - he separated the 2 components and put a fly-lead between the two.

The Communications Hub now sits about 8 inches from the meter itself, and higher up on the wall.

That’s just what I wanted to hear. Thanks so much for completing the picture for us 🙇‍♂️

Ah, but today there is also this from a customer in Kinross:

The engineer today brought with him an English comms hubs, but OVO refused him permission to install it.

which I interpret as the engineer having one or more 4G coms hubs in his van, but not being allowed to fit one for reasons of policy:
