It’s normal for a credit balance to build up in your energy account over summer, when energy use is usually lower. This credit can help pay for your energy in winter, when most homes use more. It helps you spread your energy costs over time. Even if your energy account is in credit, sometimes your Direct Debit payments still need to increase.

This could be the case if we’ve worked out that your OVO account is likely to have a debt balance long term – based on how much energy your home is predicted to use.

You can always choose to get a credit refund if you prefer. You can request one at any time in your online account, in our app, or over the phone. You just need to leave credit to cover at least 1 month’s Direct Debit payment. This is in line with our refund policy.

Useful to know - It’s important you have all the info, then you can decide what’s best for you;

  • If you request a refund online, sometimes we’ll need to confirm this over the phone. This is to make sure you have the details of how it’ll affect your energy account.

  • Getting a refund might mean your Direct Debit payments will need to increase, once your account has less credit in it.

Thanks for that extra information @Shelagh McKay Jones

However that is not saying that you have to keep 3-months in credit.

What it is saying is that if/when asking for a refund of credit online you have to leave 3-months credit. (It's  always been like that).

However if you contact support you can request a refund of credit leaving just 1-months credit.

The difference is simply if you request the refund yourself online or if you contact support to do the refund.

I said, Hey - Watts going on.

The headline quite clearly says I can't get a refund. However after posting publicly on Facebook they have contacted me and have now processed a refund. In previous years I did not have this rigmarole to get my own money back. They are clearly misleading people.

Hey @Shelagh McKay Jones

I’m glad to see the social media team reached out and got that sorted.

The amount refundable is different on the app when completing this via self service than what can be done by the Support Team. As Nukecad mentioned, the amount you can self serve via the app is different and does require 3 months Direct Debit is kept in the account, where as with the Support Team, who can complete further assurances and check, is 1 month.

It would be interesting to know where that second screenshot was taken from as in the app it does mention the 3 months like that first screenshot does.

Thanks for confirming that, it looks like one is from the logged in web account and one is taken from the refunds policy webpage? I know in the app it does recommend speaking with Support if a refund request isn’t available online. I am going to feed all of this back to the team as I can see on the refund policy page it does mention that 1 month rule but also goes on to say you can then apply online if the above criteria are met which isn’t the case so it sounds like that update has been missed when the policy changed.

Apologies for any confusion cause, hopefully the team can get all of this information aligned soon, and again, I’m glad the Social Media team were able to help get things sorted.
