Looking into getting an electric van/campervan (EV) - anyone got any tips?

Has anyone got any experience of small electric vans?

We haven't had a car for many years.

Just have an 18 year old petrol little Suzuki Carry van that we have had since new converted into a micro campervan.

Great find, @Jeffus!

You tempted to try hiring to get a feel for life with an EV camper before you get your own? :minibus: (we’d love to hear all about it if so!)

I know it’s not (yet) a campervan, but it’s easily converted. OVO Field Force’s new fleet of Vauxhall Vivaro EVs on show in the Bristol office car park today, and we had a chance to speak to the engineers driving them.

I didn’t know about brake assistance charge!

Great range on these, @Jess_OVO do you remember the figure? Love the colour ;)

There was definitely campervan conversion potential with that one and a range of ~260 miles if I remember correctly.

Far enough for a trip down to Cornwall at least! :sunglasses:

Just came across this thread looking for some more info about EV campervans, and thought I’d share a link to a useful article I came across on a website about self-build campervans!

Hey @evchick16,

Welcome to the community 🚎🔋

Do you currently have an EV? This articles a little older now and that article that you shared is so helpful with plenty of useful information for those looking to get into the electric campervan life. I’ll take a look at it and see what we can do to bring it up to date and if you have any suggestions I’d love to hear them.

@Chris_OVO electric campervans haven't taken off as much as I expected, there are examples out there but not many. Most are still ICE vehicles.

The Nissan NV200 which was a common platform isn't available new any more and most conversions are now of imported versions of the van. It is OK, but it can make servicing more difficult as some garages won't work on them. I would personally stay away.

We still have our 21 year old suzuki carry conversion i posted about and haven't switched to an EV camper. The costs are simply to high IMHO.

It will be interesting to see how things evolve as the targets for EVs ramp up. We may see the new campervan market contract unless the upfront costs fall.

Then there is the issue of the electricity supply on campsites being unable to cope with recharging.

Nothing is insurmountable and the future is electric, but right now ev campervans are very niche.

I said we wouldn't switch our camper for another ICE camper, but honestly I am not sure if we switched this year which feels a shame.

Have you seen Glyn Hudson’s Nissan conversion?

Yes, a very common Nissan conversation.
