Why should car charging cost less than me heating my house?

As normal this forum is manned by ovo employees and not independant at all!

Actually, there’s an agreement in place that OVO Staff won’t use the forum at all unless they either help to run it (such as Tim) or have permission.

Those that post here are either independent forum volunteers like myself or visitors who come by of their own choosing.

It can be used at anytime, but it does not charge at all times as it only charges when there is low demand on the grid. But it overrules itself if it looks as if your car will not be ready when you wish for it.

It is a way of using surplus energy which as the way things stand only goes to waste,

You can choose to charge your vehicle on economy 7 or what ever it is called these days during you 7 hours of cheaper electricity.

Well Turnip, as a Suffolk Swede I do find you arguments a little futile and odd as you already have one cheap rate of power, why not add a charger and benefit from 10p per kWh.

It is an interesting topic. 

We are definitely in a transition phase. For example something will have to be done to replace the governments lost income from the revenue raised on fossil fuel vehicles. It is not sustainable long term that EV owners can charge their vehicle and not pay towards the upkeep of roads etc. There will be a tipping point. Be interesting to see what happens and how the government chargers EV owners for using roads, one recent proposal is 6p plus vat per mile. 

On the subject of the anytime tarrif it works well as ovo can choose the cheaper times to charge the vehicle. I suspect they might find this more difficult in winter. Whether a fixed price for Anytime is sustainable longer term will be interesting to watch. The number of people on these sort of tariff will be relatively small so the risk to ovo is small. What happens when millions of people are on the anytime tariff will be interesting to see.

There has been work around Smart charging storage heaters. For example

I don't think the ovo work is ongoing. 

It won't be easy due to the dumb nature of the majority of storage heaters.

There are about 1.7m homes heated with storage heaters so not a small number, that is more than the number of EVs and heat pumps combined. I didn't realise that until I looked. But obviously that will change. 

For the majority of homes it, is envisagd heat pumps will be installed. 

It would help if the government mandated some smart features in any new storage heater, not a subject I known anything about. That might help encourage some new tariff.
