100% ‘green’ energy now only with a smart meter - how does this work?

Today I received an e-mither from OVO detailing how those with smart meters will get 100% ‘green’ energy. I’ve replied (twice now) to OVO asking how this is possible when all electricity is extracted from the National Grid! All I get by way of an answer is the party line about smart meters. Maybe someone on here can explain how the meters only use ‘green’ energy and not the other kind when it is all lumped together!  They must think we’re all as gullible as their staff that regurgitate the smart meter mantra!

Hi @Rowdy and thanks for asking this question.

What are the changes to the core green proposition?

From 1 October 2022, 100% renewable electricity is only available to customers who currently have an electricity smart meter or choose to have a smart meter installed.

Why are these changes happening?

We’re committed to tackling climate change and enabling the energy transition here at OVO. We want to bring our customers into the new era of green energy and getting a smart meter is the first step. Smart meters let the national grid better estimate energy demand so we maximise the use of renewable power. Meaning that we rely less and less on fossil fuels. Since the inception of REGOs (renewable energy certificates), the energy market has developed and moved on and we believe there is now no such thing as a non-smart green energy plan.

We want our customers to engage with their energy usage, and with these changes we are encouraging them to be active participants in the energy transition. With thousands of members actively involved - the difference is huge.

How is the energy I use 100% renewable?

OVO can’t ensure that the energy from the national grid to your home is renewable. It all gets mixed up when matching supply with demand. OVO buys renewable energy from power purchase agreements, and via REGO’s, ensuring that the right amount of renewable electricity goes onto the grid.

Hope that helps, check out the articles I’ve linked to for more info!

The rules have already existed for many years. Once a meter reaches the end of service life, it has to be replaced as part of recertification. You don’t get a say in that.

When the supplier comes to replace the meter, they’ll fit whatever they have on hand. Since stocks of non-smart meters are basically depleted now, there’s no escaping an upgrade.

In my 68 years on this earth I have never had a meter changed for certification or any other reason

No doubt what you say will be the excuse to force a change to Smart meters but I can assure you it is not for the benifit of the consumer

What proof do you have for that? I’m afraid I don’t accept unfounded or unproven claims.

I dont need proof only common sense

In my time I have had the common sense to see the bigger picture

from Brixit, the Energy and Financial crisis it is being manipulated  by third parties the rich get rich the poor pay the price

why else would they elect incompetents to be in charge of countrys making decisions that change the world order

Well I came here to say I like smart meter time of use tariffs, especially when I got paid to use electricity when there was surplus.

But it seems like we have moved on from discussing the merits of smart meters somewhat!

Well, without proof, your claims aren’t valid.

I don’t have permission from Western Power Distribution to publicly share the discussions I had with them recently. What I can say is that they relate to an ingenious solution that’s impossible to pull off if you don’t have Smart Meters. And it’s something that hardly anyone else will have ever considered before.

I agree I got sidetracked

I have had my say so I am out

In short its a load of mumbo jumbo intended to make us think the smart meters do something. They don’t. You are burning fossil fuel still.

Wake up OVO we’re not a stupid as you think. Stop lying to us with your greenwash.

Hey @Nikos,

Recently OVO has started the Power Move trial, taken from the FAQs

“We want to reward our customers for taking positive steps to reduce their carbon footprint this winter. Power Move offers you the opportunity to be rewarded for reducing your non-essential electricity usage during peak hours (4pm to 7pm, Monday to Friday). If you use less than 12.5% of your daily electricity usage during these peak hours each month, you’ll receive a £20 energy credit for that month.”

This has only been made possible because of smart meters.

Similarly, there is the National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) scheme. Customers are being financially rewarded for reducing energy at peak times. Without smart technology grid balancing wouldn’t be possible, we couldn’t reward customers for not using energy at peak times- as we wouldn’t have this data.

OVO Energy Tracker also tells customers when the grid is at it’s greenest.

Unfortunately, the infrastructure of the energy market means that we are still reliant of fossil fuels but this is slowly changing for the better.

For customers who have smart meters we purchase 100% renewable energy on their behalf. On top of all this, smart meters ensure customers billing is accurate and means we are able to purchase the right amount of energy as we are more aware of customer usage.

Renewable Energy? Big Fan.

there is a very devious reason some energy companies are so keen to get everyone on smart meters - not sure if it applies to Ovo but maybe they could confirm if so?

Default on your bill and your ‘smart meter’ is smartly switched to a pay-as-you go meter at greatly increased cost. Very smart!
