100% ‘green’ energy now only with a smart meter - how does this work?

Today I received an e-mither from OVO detailing how those with smart meters will get 100% ‘green’ energy. I’ve replied (twice now) to OVO asking how this is possible when all electricity is extracted from the National Grid! All I get by way of an answer is the party line about smart meters. Maybe someone on here can explain how the meters only use ‘green’ energy and not the other kind when it is all lumped together!  They must think we’re all as gullible as their staff that regurgitate the smart meter mantra!

Hi @Rowdy and thanks for asking this question.

What are the changes to the core green proposition?

From 1 October 2022, 100% renewable electricity is only available to customers who currently have an electricity smart meter or choose to have a smart meter installed.

Why are these changes happening?

We’re committed to tackling climate change and enabling the energy transition here at OVO. We want to bring our customers into the new era of green energy and getting a smart meter is the first step. Smart meters let the national grid better estimate energy demand so we maximise the use of renewable power. Meaning that we rely less and less on fossil fuels. Since the inception of REGOs (renewable energy certificates), the energy market has developed and moved on and we believe there is now no such thing as a non-smart green energy plan.

We want our customers to engage with their energy usage, and with these changes we are encouraging them to be active participants in the energy transition. With thousands of members actively involved - the difference is huge.

How is the energy I use 100% renewable?

OVO can’t ensure that the energy from the national grid to your home is renewable. It all gets mixed up when matching supply with demand. OVO buys renewable energy from power purchase agreements, and via REGO’s, ensuring that the right amount of renewable electricity goes onto the grid.

Hope that helps, check out the articles I’ve linked to for more info!

Please can you put the email on here ? It’s only been sent to customers without smart meters. Sorry didn’t see your recent reply.

If you got a message along the lines of “Your comment will be published after it has been approved by a moderator” it’s quite likely the automated spam filter swallowed it. Hang in there for now, I’ll ask someone to review and hopefully release it.

If you’d like it to be visible more quickly, you can also send it to me via a Private Message. I can bypass the spam filter using my advanced permissions and it’d be published instantly.

Hi Folks

Looks like I stirred up a nest off hornet's here.

However with all the points been raised from yourselves and O V O again been a layman they are not clarifying my point that they cannot control what comes down the National Grid and into our homes.

Smart meter or not our power comes down the grid and is not defined green or brown???. Therefore how can they state That from October only smart meters will receive green power..

As stated on the initial email I and I'm sure many more have received there's a statement saying this will not effect my prices or costings.

SO again why send such a unethical email which cannot be true.

Again been the devil's advocate do OVO mean when we do achieve 100% green renewable energy coming down the grid they will not supply any power to the homes, customers without a smart meter!!!!!.

Please will someone from OVO give a straight answer and not the party line about we buy green and ref rego's. You may but as you state you have no power or control of the energy coming down the Grid.

Just admit Marketing got this one wrong, go back to the drawing board to try and convince people why we should have a smart meter fitted instead of scare mongering which I feel in my opinion they have done.

Again as stated I maybe a layman but I'm not stupid.

Well, time to stir up some more fun I guess.

After being given more information about what’s been planned, I’ve changed my stance. I now support what OVO is doing because it ultimately makes sense. I have other reasons as well, but I’m not currently in a position to talk about any of those.

As you have been given information that has not been shared perhaps you can explain what OVO is planning  on the 1st of October 2022?

Everything that can be made public already has been made public.

If you have ANY Smart Meter, working or not, you’ll still get 100% renewable electricity as before (OVO never claims 100% renewable gas because that’s impossible to do).

If you don’t have one, you’ll lose that benefit and will get whatever OVO can purchase.

I protect my sources so I can’t say where I got the other information from.

What I will say however, is that part of my stance is based off of unrelated discussions I had with Western Power Distribution over the last week. The outcomes of those discussions could also bring other benefits that are exclusive to those with smart meters.

So as I dont have a Smart meter I wont get 100% renewable energy flowing through my meter

pray tell how they will be able to do that?

One can only assume then if you've switched your school off thought then that people with smart meters have been sent a different email informing them off the future and maybe costings.

If so surley it would of been better for OVO to give clarification to everyone but wait maybe this would classed as bullying.

I only raise this as your latest comment leaves it open to all sorts of possibilities  which I'm sure you intended

Welcome to the National Grid and the complicated world of the Wholesale Market. 😉

I have a Smart Meter myself, but didn’t receive any emails. To be honest with you, I often get certain types of information from other sources, including a few people at OVO who sometimes give me a heads up about big, important changes.

This isn’t bullying in my reasonable opinion. Consider it more of an incentive to move the grid forwards. Smart Meters are coming to your house at some point anyway, whether you want them or not. All meters only have a finite service life after all! This is really just another opportunity to upgrade early before you’re required and forced to replace the meters when their service life expires.

Legislation will happen to force you to have a Smart meter but until then I have freedom of choice

Wholesale markets are not complicated they are driven by supply and demand which is why we have a energy crisis

the kicker is you can try and save energy but you will be penalised and ripped off for your efforts

Energy suppliers are driven by profit for shareholders less demand means less profit so prices rise to maintain or increase profits so you pay more for less

the same happens with food producers charging more for less

it is called shrinkflation
