My consumer unit keeps tripping, is this connected to the smart meter?

After OVO installed a smart meter it kept tripping. I reported this and was informed to re set the trip. This has gone in now for a year, I turn off all electrical appliances at night and it still trips. Surely this is not right?

If you’re off supply for electricity and can’t get it back on via the fuse board then this may indicate a problem with the meter. Our Support Team will be able to diagnose this for you. You can find more information about emergencies, and what to do when off supply on our website here.

If your electricity is off, or is cutting out or tripping, and it isn’t a problem with the meter, then you’ll need to contact an electrician, as OVO only have responsibility for the meter itself, and can’t send an engineer out for any appliance issues.

Update as promised.

I eventually contacted ovo and explained the problem. They said it wasn't the smart meter,  after further discussion he went away to check his computer, whatever he did CU tripped immediately. I told him this and also my problem with gas meter not sending readings. After me checking serial number he told me meter was registered incorrectly and he would update it while I was on the line. Whatever he did, the CU tripped again. I told him and said I was having a new metal cased CU fitted, to which he said he would check back with me to see if this solved the problem.

I have now had the new CU for just under 2 weeks, everything is fine (touch wood).

So I can only conclude it must of been interference,  I think ovo should of informed me about the possible problem with the CU before they fitted the smart meters.

If you have a plastic CU case... do not fit a smart meter, unless you want to spend hundreds of pounds on a new metal case CU.

Good day.

I recently moved into new house and i requested my energy supplier it is ovo.

I thought I will get my bill monthend as the electricity was working but yesterday all downstairs lights went off and only one electrical socket is working sofar .

Im not sure how to do recharge or pay my bills as i just moved out of a house where i was charged rent and all bills to landlords.

Thank you for helping

Welcome @Timo !

First thing I’d do is head over to https://switch.ovoenergy.com to get set up if you haven’t already. That will activate your OVO Account if the property is Pay Monthly, or invite you to contact OVO if it’s Pay As You Go.

Second thing I’m thinking is that you had a lightbulb blow which tripped the circuits - did you check the consumer unit by any chance?

I’d agree, if you have one socket that is working then you obviously have an electricity supply.

If the downstairs lights are off then it sounds like that lighting circuit has tripped out; so check the consumer unit for tripped circuit breakers.

@Timo

Can you confirm the staus of you lights and power and do you know where your meter and consumer units are?

Hey @Timo

I’m glad to see a few of our community members have already stopped by with some helpful advice here.

It’s unlikely to be anything to do with your supplier, and sounds more like an issue past the meter.

If you’ve not done so already, setting up the online account will also be a good idea as mentioned by Blastoise186 so you can keep track of your energy account.

Do let us know how you get on.

@Timo Are you still having problems with your power?
