KAIFA M120 Smart Meter- Can I change to Economy 7?

We have just had a KAIFA M120 smart meter installed. I had hoped that this would enable  economy 7. However OVO at first told me that this was not possible. On a subsequent phone call they told me that it was possible but that I’d have to wait for another installation (meter ?)  and that it would cost £325.  I am not sure about this as looking online I am fairly sure that the new meter can cope with a second tariff. Does any one know anything about this ? And also where can I get a KAIFA M120 smart meter manual.

Hi @a1anx ,

I’m afraid there’s no manual available for that meter. I have one for Aclara (both single and three phase) but that won’t help you.

What kind of heating and hot water do you have?

And yes, all smart meters can do Economy 7 to at least some degree.

It’s probably a Kaifa MA120 https://csa-iot.org/csa_product/kaifa-ma120-single-phase-electricity-meter-2/

Yep that’s the one.

Interesting post, @a1anx - I’m not familiar with that meter either.

£325 sounds like the job to upgrade to/from a 3 phase supply. That would be needed if your new energy requirements now demand it, say after you get an electric vehicle charger installed. Or you have a separate meter for off peak and they’re being combined following a smart meter install. There might be other reasons.

But perhaps you actually just need a smart meter with a 5th port for your set up. Do you have a heating system like storage heaters or underfloor heating? Do you just want a two rate (peak and off peak, otherwise known as day / night) tariff for cheaper night time usage? if so, perhaps the meter can be changed remotely. Does the meter communicate with OVO remotely? You can check this via your online account usage section: https://account.ovoenergy.com/usage

If you’re on a single rate tariff, I believe there’s also a technical issue with OVO’s billing platform that might prevent that.

Lots to look into there, but hope that helps!
