Can you change a single rate smart meter to Economy 7 after it's been fitted?

Earlier this year I had a standard rate smart meter fitted. Since then I have bought a plug-in electric vehicle and I think it may be more economical to charge at 'Economy 7' overnight rate.

I have two questions......

1) Is it possible to retrospectively change a smart meter to dual rate mode?
2) If yes, what are the current costs for each rate?

Many thanks for your help.

Great question to ask about the possibility of updating your Smart Meter to a dual rate function. Bear in mind that Economy 7 has a cheaper off-peak (night time) rate and a more expensive peak (day time) rate. This means that Economy 7 is generally only best if you have night time storage heaters and/or an immersion tank that works on a timer. These appliances use a lot of power in the off-peak hours.

You can find out more about Economy 7 here:

Single Rate to Economy 7

Unfortunately, we don't currently have the functionality to change Smart Meters from Single Rate to Economy 7, or vice versa. If this ever becomes available we’ll update the Forum to let you know.

Economy 7 to Single Rate

Although we're unable to physically change the functionality of meters right now. We can put you on a single rate plan without changing the meter. We’d simply take both sets of readings and charge the total usage on one flat unit rate.

Not me I moved into the property only recently although SSE used to supply the property (the Smart Meter is branded SSE). Is this a known issue with the move to Ovo from SSE

Not a known issue with OVO to SSE move, it can just be helpful from the start to know.

Have you spoken to the OVO Support team to flag the issue and get the process started to sorting it out? Useful to do this as a first step based on experience.

Hey @rcneedenergy,

That sounds frustrating,

I think Support would be best placed to deal with this very account specific issue.

Keep us posted with how you get on as this might help other customers in the future.

Spoke with advanced resolutions a couple of days ago apparently it’s only temporary. As the class mismatch issue was preventing my account from being set up they had to set me up single rate, however they are working on resolving the class mismatch. Fingers crossed this will be resolved by my next billing period or the one after. Keeping my complaint active until this is resolved but hopefully my next update on this thread will be to say all is resolved and I will be billed correctly moving forward on E7

Hey @rcneedenergy,

I’m really glad to hear it’s temporary,

Yes, thank you for keeping the thread updated. Luckily, this seems to be an account specific issues but it’d be really helpful incase another customer gets affected by the same issue!

Hope you had a nice weekend 🙂

Hi

I am trying to switch from single rate plan to economy 7 as I have an overnight hot water heater that won’t heat up / activate without the night time feed ( I have a 5 port smart meter )

I have been waiting 2 weeks now for the account switch and have therefore been without any hot water - I am register as a vulnerable / priority customer due to disability and need the supply fixed asap

has anyone else made a tariff change and how long did it take?

I called customer support last week and was told there is not time scale set - surely they can’t leave it much longer !

Hey @Adamjonuk,

Sorry for the issues youre having,

Do you already have an Economy 7 meter and you just want to apply an Economy 7 Tariff? If so, this will be raised to our billing team, if you are unhappy with waiting you can request for this to be changed to ‘high priority’.

If you’re single rate I’m afraid we can’t change customers from Single rate to Economy 7.

Hope this helps.

Yes thank You

i have a 5 port smart meter that can run E7 - the swap to E7 has been actioned and agreed - i was wondering how long a tariff change and recoding of meter takes  as I don’t want to keep petering customer service - but at same time would like hot water restored.

Hey @Adamjonuk,

Sorry to hear you don’t have water,

Based on this, I’d advise contacting Support and explaining the tariff change is urgent. If you don’t get the resolution you need, there is always the option to raise a complaint.

Keep us posted with how you get on.
