Can I switch from an Economy 7 plan to a single rate plan without a smart meter exchange?

Hi I’m currently on an Econ 7 meter/tariff however my night usage has dropped significantly over the last year as I no longer use the night storage heaters (way too expensive).

I’m now thinking that I’d do better on a standard rate tariff. My current fix ends, end of Aug and OVO have offered me several tariffs, but I can’t access any non Econ 7 tariffs - and OVO seem to have closed their phone service today so I can’t ask that way.

I don’t have a smart meter (and don’t want one).
Where can I access tariff rate fixes and current/predicted price please?

Unfortunately, we don't currently have the functionality to change Smart Meters from Single Rate to Economy 7, or vice versa. This is something we are looking to make possible in the future and we’ll keep you posted with any further updates here on the Forum!

If you’re on an Economy 7 plan and you’d like to switch to a new standard energy plan, just shop around for a plan in the usual way. If your meter needs to be changed, most energy suppliers will do that for you at no extra cost. So if you’ve got a traditional meter, it’s likely this will need changed first.

Economy 7 to Single Rate

Although we're unable to physically change the functionality of meters right now. We can offer an Economy 7 to Single Rate plan! This means you’ll be paying the same rate for each register.

Single Rate to Economy 7

At the moment as it stands, there's no way for customers who wish to switch their Smart Meters from Single Rate to Economy 7

For more on Economy 7, check out the OVO web page here.

Thanks for your response because I've lost sleep through worry so to know i was justified in my belief that it's an unfair charge and therefore don't have to pay for it because now I can relax a bit more and have more confidence in the next phone call i might possibly have with them.

OVO trying to blackmail me into remaining on E7 when it's too expensive for me now ...

… they threatened to charge me £106 if I think about changing …

Something is not quite right here. If you’re currently on an E7 tariff and you want to switch to a standard single-rate tariff, it depends on the type of meter you have. If it’s a smart meter, then it can usually be done remotely at the flick of a switch. If it’s not a smart meter, it might have to be exchanged for a new, smart one. In either case, there’s no cost to you.

You didn’t say what the £106 was for, but that is OVO’s standard charge for work like disconnecting or reconnecting a meter at your request. I don’t understand why this would be quoted to you unless you’d asked for it.

If you explain your situation exactly and what you wanted to be done, and then tell us what OVO said in response, we’d be better able to help.

Hey @Mark Shaw,

I think you may have been misadvised.

Thanks. Yes please can I have my current economy seven tariff changed to the single rate tariff without the need for a meter change therefore not needing to pay £106 for the privilege.

We can’t arrange that from here I’m afraid. Forum Volunteers can’t access your account

Hi. I’m looking at comparison sites for quotes to try and minimise the incoming winter bills. When I moved into the property it was on an economy 7 tariff even though the meter wasn’t an economy 7 meter.
I now have 3 phase and had a new smart meter installed and on the simpler energy plan but getting two tariffs (both the same cost) for some reason.
The comparison websites are only quoting me for an economy 7 tariff which is really frustrating as I feel that I may be missing out on other deals.
Anybody out there who has experienced the same?

Hi @jgt ,

OVO will have probably just set the rates to be the same across both rates. You’ll need to talk to them if you want this to be changed so that the two-rate setup is completely gone by updating the Profile Class.

I actually tried this before my new meter install but they just changed the plan to include two identical tariffs, took ages to get them to do this so I’m loathe to actually phone again.
It’s a shame someone on this forum couldn’t make these requests for us.
I suppose I’ll have to bite the bullet 😟

Thanks.

Been on before but can’t see it now.

Took out storage heaters and fitted panel heaters. Wanted OVO to change metering to enable 24 hour supply throughout. They put in a smart meter and the former storage heater circuit is still restricted.

They appear unwilling/unable to resolve this.

Have they put in the wrong meter?
