Can I have a smart meter with an Economy 7 plan?

When I last spoke with OVO I was told a smart meter could not be fitted as we were on Economy 7 dual rate tariff. I am now being bombarded with emails and phone calls from OVO trying to get me to have a smart meter.

Has the situation changed, can I now get a smart meter and keep my Economy 7 tariff?

If not, and OVO do have my records, why do you keep asking me (and presumably everyone else on Economy 7) the same question over and over again?

I want to change from single rate to Economy 7

 

Unfortunately, we don't currently have the functionality to change Smart Meters from Single Rate to Economy 7, or vice versa. 

 

Economy 7 to Single Rate 

 

Although we're unable to physically change the functionality of meters right now, we can offer an Economy 7 to single rate plan! This means you’ll be paying the same rate for each register (peak and off-peak).

Single Rate to Economy 7 

 

At the moment there's no way for customers who wish to switch their Smart Meters from Single Rate to Economy 7.

Great question to ask about the possibility of installing a smart meter if you’ve got an Economy 7 setup.  

We fit Aclara SMETS 2 smart meters for all Economy 7 set ups including those that use a 5th port/terminal connection, such as underfloor heating or storage heaters on economy 7 - More info here.

When it’s installed the smart meter will match the function of your previous meter (ie a dual rate traditional meter will be replaced by a dual rate Smart Meter).

 

If you’re currently Economy 7 but you’d like to be on a single rate tariff, reach out to our Support Team. While we can’t currently change the meter functionality, we can charge you the same rate for each register.

From that it's all the one rate - currently it's costing you 25.88p per kWh no matter what day or time of day it happens to be.

​@jamesb27 An extra thought:

If you have a smart meter and pay by direct debit then you can download/install the OVO Energy app, open it and scroll down to Beyond where there is currently the 2 hours a week Free Electricity (I kWh per hour) reward.

That usually has a 1 hour slot each Sunday.

That’s your choice to make of course.

Although it does mean that you pay a higher tariff rate, and that you miss out on some special offers like the current 2-hours a week Free Electricity.
(Or Power Move which you can also see in that first screenshot. Personally I’ve had over £200 cedit knocked off my electricity bills from Power Move since I joined).

JSYK, pretty much any supplier you ask will ALL give you higher quotes for Pay On-Demand over PAYG/Direct Debit.

The best rates are always available without POD.
