When I last spoke with OVO I was told a smart meter could not be fitted as we were on Economy 7 dual rate tariff. I am now being bombarded with emails and phone calls from OVO trying to get me to have a smart meter.

Has the situation changed, can I now get a smart meter and keep my Economy 7 tariff?

If not, and OVO do have my records, why do you keep asking me (and presumably everyone else on Economy 7) the same question over and over again?

I am being bombarded with requests to fit a smart meter. I have a 100kw 3 phase meter with Economy 7. I continually ask the question is there a smart meter available? The answers are incomprehensible and it is clear the question is not understood.

Hi @Elektron ,

If you’re getting those offers, it’s probably because you are eligible to upgrade now.

Can you show us photos of the meter you’ve already got real quick? We can help you check!

Hi @Elektron , you don’t say what answers are ‘incomprehensible’ but whether you can get a 3 phase smart meter will depend on several factors:

•If the supply is domestic or commercial

•What the current rating of each phase is

•What area you are in

•If the existing meter is CT fed or not

Your E7 need might also be a block but others have moved to a single phase supply to simplify the process

Hey @Elektron,

Welcome to the OVO Online Community,

I can see Community Member BPLightlog has given some helpful advice here:

The answer is clearly NO, see below.

You ask what is incomprehensible, “the answers from the untrained smart meter staff at OVO”. It is unfair on them to be expected to deal with customers when they have no clue what they are talking about.

The calls keep coming and I ask each time “do you now have a three phase, dual rate meter” and the staff have not the slightest idea what I am talking about.

This is really very simple stuff and the nonsense been peddled by OVO in their correspondence is alarmist and misleading. I am glad my elderly parents had the good sense to ask for my thoughts which were ignore the confetti mail from OVO. Frankly no company should post letters of that nature to vulnerable people, disgraceful.

Do OVO offer 3 phase smart meters?

3 phase (aka polyphase) installations in domestic properties are few and far between, so it's a minority of meter engineers across the country that have the skills required to complete these installations. There are also some technical challenges in making sure your job is allocated to an engineer with these skills but we are just as keen as you are to have Smart available for these sites ASAP, so if you would like to take part in this beta stage release, please consider the steps below:

If you have a single rate 3 phase meter (i.e. not Economy 7 / 2-rate etc.) we would encourage you to book a smart meter appointment as normal online or over the phone on 0330 303 5063.

This will then go through to a specialist team who will validate that it is single rate job and that an 3 phase engineer is available in your region. If this is the case, they will re-book your appointment with the right engineer. (So please bear in mind your appointment date/time will likely change, but we'll try to keep it the same where possible.)

Unfortunately, if you have a 2-rate meter or are not in an area covered by our current crop of 3 phase skilled engineers, you will need to continue with your heritage meter. We know this will be frustrating, so we are sorry about that, we are working to expand our coverage and by you flagging your interest to us, you are helping us shape where and when that coverage develops. - thank you!

Hi @Elektron,

I’m sorry to hear this.

Three-phase smart meters are currently unavailable for economy 7 or any other multi-rate three phase supplies. This is something that is still being worked on by the team and we hope to be able to offer them soon. We’ll update any related topics as soon as we get any further updates on this.

I apologise if you’ve been misadvised.
