When I joined OVO I didn’t get the lovely smart colour In Home Display they advertise showing your actual current useage, but a fairly useless Secure Pipit 500 black & white unit that defaults to a meaningless display of the total you’ve ever spent with OVO. With the need to monitor energy usage more closely, can anyone recommend a good In Home Display that I could buy if necessary which shows as a default display the actual live gas and electricity usage? Sadly, I can’t get anywhere with OVO themselves...

Not only can I recommend one potential IHD, but I’ve actually got two for you. Both the ivie Bud from https://ivie.co.uk and the Hildebrand Glow IHD from https://shop.glowmarkt.com should work fine. It sounds to me as if you’ve got Secure Liberty meters, so I’d probably recommend going for the SMETS1 version of the Hildebrand Glow IHD as it’ll have a better chance of getting a connection. Hildebrand won’t take your money if your meters fail the compatibility check either, so there’s no risk.
