3 phase 200A smart meter install?

Hi - new to this forum - first question here….

We are currently building a new house and would need to get a meter (ideally smart) installed.

We have a 3 phase 200A incoming supply with a solar array (31 Kwp) with 3x Tesla power walls on the system.   The supply is a single family dwelling, domestic house only.

The electricity provider (SSE) is bringing power to our plant room and providing a cut out where the new meter should be installed.

Is this something OVO can assist with please?   Thanks very much.

Hey all!!

OVO can but the installation will be conducted by one of our contractors. A call to Customer Services specifically mentioning 200A supply, CT Meter and please dont book with Field Force (OVO direct engineers) should be sufficient to get an appointment.

Howdy @Nickcook100 ,

Please provide photos of the current setup, we’ll see what we can suggest from there.

Hi @Nickcook100 ,

there are various things that can be done but you would need to reach out to customer support to check and book.

This guide might help point in the right direction

From your post everything appears to be under control currently, so I’m not sure just what the question is here?

Are you looking for a -------??

Thanks for the replies to date - the tutorial is helpful thank you @BPLightlog .

@Nukecad sorry if my question / ask was not clear, what I’m looking for is confirmation as to whether or not OVO can install a smart meter on my 3 phase 200amp incoming supply.

The incoming upgrade work being undertaken by our DNO SSE, which brings power to our plant room and provides a cut out where the new meter should be installed, is indeed currently under control (albeit not yet complete hence no pics to share).

What I’m struggling with is getting a supplier to confirm that a smart meter can be hooked up to it!   So far Octopus and British Gas both seem unable to say yes or no and have just been giving me the run around!   I was hoping OVO would be my solution.

Gotcha, thanks for the context. OVO has the ability to do three-phase stuff but it’s a bit fiddly.

I’ll grab @Lukepeniket_OVO as he can generally figure out the best route - especially if you need a CT Meter.

@Nickcook100 How did you get on with this? We have the same situation with a small business and both Octopus and EDF are telling us we need to down grade to 100 amp fuse which requires our supply cable to be dug up and replaced which is ££££

Morning @fifer27 and a warm welcome to the OVO Forum.

Thanks for reopening this thread, and hopefully @Nickcook100 can share their experience here.

I hope you can get this one sorted soon - it sounds like something your District Network Operator (DNO) will have to be involved in. Have you spoken to them?

Hi, we spoke to the DNO with regards to a downgrade hence we know how expensive its going to be. Not sure if they can help us get a smart meter though. I just don’t understand the issue with us getting a smart meter

This is curious and I’d question the DNO, for a fuse downgrade where we allow less Amps through the cable surely this doesn’t need replacement? i.e. a cable that takes >100A is absolutely fine for a design current of <100A???

Hi, after a lot of perseverance and various let downs with Octopus, we got it sorted with Good Energy.  They supplied and installed something called an EMDI Atlas Mk10A meter….we’re all powered up but smart functionality is not quite there yet, and some confusion about accessing the Good Energy tariff we want because the system can’t compute that the tariff is a domestic one but the meter they installed is commercial! 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️.   Nothing straight forward but we did at least get a meter!

Install was via a specialist team at SMS, all arranged by Good Energy.

Just wanted to stop by and mention something possibly important - I’m afraid that’s not a Smart Meter - it’s an AMR (Automatic Meter Reader) Meter. The EDMI Atlas Mk10 and Mk10A are often used for complex installs (usually businesses) where no valid SMETS1 or SMETS2 hardware exists for the requirements of a particular supply. It does sometimes get used for a domestic install, but these days it’s somewhat rare.

Unfortunately, you won’t get full Smart functionality out of it. You might get basic automated meter readings submitted if that functionality has been enabled… But from what I’ve seen it’s more likely than not that it won’t when on a domestic supply. IIRC OVO has historically had a way to do it though, but it’s nowhere near as elegant as just connecting to DCC, ping the meter, requesting the data and have it come back like it is for a full-on Smart Meter.

This does mean, unfortunately, you’ll likely be locked out of almost all tariffs that require a Smart Meter.

The other snag I can foresee is that OVO doesn’t currently offer business supplies so even though OVO can do Polyphase Smart Meters, they can’t install them on a Non-Domestic supply.

Hi @Nickcook100,

Thanks very much for coming back to us on this one.   I’m happy to hear you’ve got a meter installed now that will let you use the supply in the way you planned, albeit not a fully functioning smart meter.

If Good Energy have updated the electricity National Database to show your property in the same way as a commercial supply, then this would indeed prevent you switching to OVO, but I can’t speak for other suppliers of course.

Are Good Energy going to try and get you on the tariff you want, despite the meter not being the correct type?
