Power Move - New challenge information and changes to Power Move

Updated on 14/07/26 by Abby_OVO

Hi everyone,

In 2024, OVO customers saved over £1.6 million by shifting their energy and making greener choices with Power Move.

Ahead of the challenge starting 1 February 2025, we introduced a few changes.

Power Move prize draw

Whilst Power Move will always be about helping you save money on your energy bills and reducing demand on the energy grid, the way it works has changed.

Each month, if you use 15% or less of your total electricity during peak times you’ll now earn entries into a monthly prize draw. The number of entries depends on how much electricity you use during peak times. The lower your home’s peak time energy use, the more entries you’ll earn.

How we calculate your number of entries

If you have a peak time electricity usage of 15% or less at the end of the month, you’ll earn entries for the prize draw.

The amount of entries earned will correspond with your end-of-month peak time electricity use percentage as follows:

  • 0 to 1% = 15 entries
  • 1.01 to 2% = 14 entries
  • 2.01 to 3% = 13 entries
  • 3.01 to 4% = 12 entries
  • 4.01 to 5% = 11 entries
  • 5.01 to 6% = 10 entries
  • 6.01 to 7% = 9 entries
  • 7.01 to 8% = 8 entries
  • 8.01 to 9% = 7 entries
  • 9.01 to 10% = 6 entries
  • 10.01 to 11% = 5 entries
  • 11.01 to 12% = 4 entries
  • 12.01 to 13% = 3 entries
  • 13.01 to 14% = 2 entries
  • 14.01% to 15% = 1 entry
  • 15.01% or above = 0 entries

After each month ends, the number of entries you’ve earned will be automatically entered into a prize draw, along with all the entries of other customers who’ve earned entries in that month.

The prizes

A minimum of 5 customers each month will win up to a year’s worth of free energy*, with a range of other bill credit prizes also available to win. There’ll be a minimum of 10,000 prizes available every month.

You can see what prizes are being offered in the Power Move section of your OVO app and on ovoenergy.com/power-move at the beginning of each new month.

If you’re a winner you’ll be notified in the Power Move section of the app. Customers can win one prize per month.

Changes to peak times

We've heard your feedback that it can feel difficult to shift your home’s energy use during the current window of 4-7pm. From 1 February 2025, peak times changed to 5pm-7pm, Monday - Friday

Weekend usage is still counted as off-peak.

Updates via the OVO app

You'll be able to see your progress through the app. When the new challenge is live, sign in to your account and select 'Power Move' on the home screen.

Here, you’ll have a progress dashboard to track how you’re getting on, and see if you’ve won a prize at the end of the month.

For more information, visit ovoenergy.com/power-move, our Power Move FAQs and Power Move terms and conditions.

*A year’s free energy is set at a maximum bill credit of £2,000. A year’s free energy is calculated in line with Ofgem’s average Energy Price Cap for January-March 2025 for customers paying by Direct Debit, which is worked out based on a 2-3 bedroom house, with 2 to 3 occupants using the average domestic usage in electricity per year. Credit may not equal one year’s free energy if you are a higher than average user or if the price cap were to increase beyond current forecasts. We’ll pay it as energy bill credit in 12 monthly instalments. For example, if you win a year's free energy in January, the credit would be applied to your bill in February and each following month up to the last payment in January the following year.

Well they have 4 million customers, so even if 50% are eligible not much chance of winning🙄

I can tell you now with 100% certainty that there isn’t even anywhere near 1 million customers taking part in Power Move. And besides, the number of prizes available can be adjusted as needed anyway…

I don’t particularly want do drag the discussions in this thread back open again, so our (as in from Forum Volunteers like myself) involvement here will be limited going forward. For me, it’s already dragged on long enough and we’ve answered just about everything anyway. There’s no plans to lock the thread that I know of - just don’t be surprised if we don’t respond.

In that case, you can leave that stuff on. Power Move is about moving non-essential usage (like cooking, baths/showers or washing) outside the peak times.

It’s totally OK to leave the lights on for example!

Leaving my fridge, internet, and laptop on would bring my usage during those hours to around 5%, putting me outside of the guarenteed reward bracket.

It’s 2% from the total amount of electricity you have consumed on weekdays. By reducing the whole amount you reduce the 2% number too. For example, if 100 points is the general amount, then you’ll need to make sure you use no more than 2 points during PM hours. If the general amount is reduced, let’s say it’s 80 points now, then your 2% will be 1.6 points. That’s why it’s much easier when you in general consume more electricity. Apparently, you have a unique electricity use pattern where your fridge could help you to reach the under 2% target. In other words, it works for you, but not necessary would work for everyone. But well done with reaching the guaranteed reward bracket!

Summertime - Beware!

Getting in early here to remind PM contenders that the transition to British Summertime on 30 March might have consequences for the peak usage percentage calculations. It would be good to have the official word on how the peak period and total usages are measured once midnight shifts by an hour. For example, how many half-hourly offpeak slots are counted between 19:00 GMT on Friday 28 March 2025 and 17:00 BST on Monday 31 March 2025?

There are a few notes on the topic here: Summertime - and the livin's not easy | The OVO Forum

I’ve also just given up on recycling because they’ve given us yet another recycling box and we have to do even more separation.  Sorry, no.  Six different bins is just too much.

Sorry, it’s completely unrelated to the topic, but is it really six bins? I hear about it all the time, but, in my case, it’s only two for recycling (one for paper/cardboard and another for glass/plastic/tins) and one for general. Just curious.

If you have 6 bins then you may as well use them. Your council will have a bin ‘consultation’; you could join in. We have 2 large bins, smaller ones not available any more, two boxes and one bag for the plastics. I don’t put them all out every time and my grey bin usage is minimal. A council providing 4 or more large bins has not thought it through.

Was  thinking of  some of the conversation as to gaining leverage of the power move

and how to maximise the power moves with in the time frame surely

what would tip the advantage  is with smart sockets plugs etc  this

would allow a greater amount of participants to partake and shift power

as they can be operated remotely  from anywhere that your mobile can get a signal or

by smart hubs  example alexa  google  as the company seems to want to get

its customers to shift power to reduce load this has to be a win win  for them and us

any thought from the powers at b nicomuss

OMG First world challenges again

i always say follow the money

someone is making a lot of money from these schemes.
I actually agree that leaving it to chance a prize draw to win anything doesn’t feel like a reward fof so much effort.
im disabled and need items that use electricity to live Im bedridden 24hrs a day on an electric bed In my household I have oxygen machine feeding pump powerchair for those occasional times I have to be removed (hospital visits -most appts done via video links) I need a charged mobile phone Oh & my bed is electric. I also have a TV got to entertain the invalid what can I reduce. Z& then down to chance. It was down to chance I got this condition

I don’t reckon my chances of winning. It’s a win if I wake up each morning and then if it’s sunny it cheers me up too.
Someone is making a lot of money from this scheme. But with my positive head on. I guess it employs a number of people working out those percentages and counting how many entries will go in the prize draw. I have premium bonds and I’ve never won on them either.
is this worth the effort

should I start a poll yes  no

All these first world challenges again I’m!!!

follow the money How much do OVO get paid to run this scheme

Does it help those in need We are in a cost of living crisis  this feels unfair  little if any reward for a lot of effort  I still try & make the effort as if will collectively help the planet but it still feels like someone is helping themself

Does Mr Miliband minister for energy heat pumps global warming whatever his title - did he ever worry about can he afford a monthly utility bill Has he ever had to sign a payment plan.
or any other minister for that, from any political party favour. I am an ecumenical critical of all parties no party favour

Hey @chrisablake

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, this is a something that comes up now and again as not every challenge or offer will be helpful, useful or compatible for every single customer. Everyone’s lifestyle is different. Ultimately, these schemes are entirely optional, so if a challenge isn't working for you or is causing unnecessary stress, you can opt out at any time via the app.
