How do I increase my gas supply volume to a large capacity supply?

I am looking to increase my gas flow volume at a residential property.  We are just about to add a new extension and its looks as though I will need to increase the KW of our boiler to 60kw.  I also have a 16kw gas fire and hob.

 

Is it a case of changing the meter or does the pipe need to be changed to the road?  From what I can gather most standard gas meter can provide around 6 cubic metres and a larger boiler needing this alone without any of the other appliances.  Any advice or help appreciated.

Great question this one, @bonjourpaul - and one that’s not been covered in depth here before.

 

It sounds like you’ve already done some research as you’re nearly spot on in terms of the capacity of a standard gas supply. The standard gas meters (also known as G4/U6 meters) have a maximum output of 64.6 kWh, in order to confirm that your current supply will need an upgrade you’ll need a gas safe engineer to calculate your ‘Service Pipe Energy Value’ (SPEV) in kWh which covers the total amount of gas used by all appliances (or planned appliances) in your home. If the standard gas meter isn’t going to be able to supply enough to fire up all the planned appliances, you’ll need to upgrade to a G10/U16 gas meter. These ones have a maximum capacity of 172.3 kWh.

 

How does a U16 upgrade work?


It’s a bit of a long process as we’re not the ones that need to be involved. To summarise, the process for upgrading to U16 is:

  • We send the SPEV information (the max load capacity required by your home) to your gas transporter, via a GT1 form
  • The transporter perform a service upgrade to the incoming pipework if necessary
  • You may need to have a new meter box (kiosk) fitted (the U16 meters are larger than standard meters and might not fit in your current meter box)
  • National Grid Metering will replace the meter for free for a U16 meter (there might be a site-survey cost to pay - see more here)
  • You’ll need to organise a gas-safe engineer to connect up the pipework afterwards

 

Hope this helps outline the steps which need to be taken. Have you already had the ‘SPEV’ confirmed? 

 

 

My next question is - how would I know if my current pipe would take this larger meter / cubic delivery ?

That sounds reasonable @bonjourpaul.

I assume this will be a completely new underground run inserted using a mole.

The cost of polyethylene pipe itself isn’t that great. So I suggest you check with SGN that the bore-size they intend using would be adequate to carry hydrogen with its lower calorific value. Ie let’s assume that the current consultation on the Future Energy Review results in Parliament legislating for that transition.

Just FYI.

SGN are the network involved the 100% hydrogen pilot (H100) that will soon be pumping 100% hydrogen into up to 1000 modified homes in Fife. 

So someone in SGN should have a good handle on Hydrogen

How did this go?

 

As we already had a 55kW boiled before OVO installed a G4 Smart meter and now our engineer has pointed out it is part of a wider unsafe problem, as 55+11 (gas stove) +14 (gas fire, so should never have been installed and we need to upgrade…

problem is the other issue meant he capped our gas supply, and it was 10 years ago, Octopus told us its not an emergency will take 6 to 8 weeks...

We're happy to help, but I'm not entirely sure what you're asking since we need a bit more information about your setup. Could you please share more details? It would be great to know what your current setup looks like, what you’ve already tried, the specific issue you’re facing, and what outcome you’re hoping for.

 

From what I can gather, it sounds like you might have installed a gas stove and a gas fire that could have exceeded the Service Pipe Energy Value (SPEV). If that’s the case, you may need to upgrade your gas supply. I'm also a bit confused about the capped gas supply and how Octopus is involved. If they're working on uncapping the supply, just keep in mind that it’s not considered an emergency, so it could take a few weeks to sort out.

Hey, yeah it was a long shot just to see how he was getting along and how long it took, as our Gas is disconnected and SGN told us 8 to 10 weeks, so was looking around to see if they really mean we will be without heating all Winter and how his timeline went… Wasn’t looking to hijack his thread (oops)

 

Our stover was installed maybe 2008, new bigger boiler 2015 maybe earlier, and in 2017 OVO replaced our meter with a G4 Smart Gas Meter. March/April 2025 SGN did a gas line replacement for the whole road, pipe in pipe, saves digging up the drive way.

Our Boiler maintenance in Feb 2026, told us the pressure was low, 12.6 without Stove, 12 with the stove on, and told us the gas pressure should be minimum 19. It was unsafe so he was capping our gas and cutting us off. he also said our Meter was undersized and that needed replacing too, idk if that was unsafe or not.

So my dad has rung Ovo up now twice both promising to get back to us, and nothing, to try see if Ovo had notes about why they installed an undersized gas meter, and if they would cover the cost to fix it. (or if it was even them in the first place and not SGN fiddling when they changed the pipe and moved (or even replaced??) our meter)

The 2nd SGN guy said they would come tomorrow morning, turns out he didnt have a clue, an inspector will come on Friday after 10 days of no Gas.

We are currently with octopus who said that SGN need to do their work first then they will start ETA 6-8 weeks and they have a backlog, the idea we get gas back in July 18 weeks later sounds craaaazy. 

was warmed outside today then in the house… and we get to enjoy electric stove cooking, with the extra bonus this is a dual stove with a 2.5kW max. Its been fun (sarcasm)

I understand it’s been a while since they last logged in, so it might feel like a long shot, but never say never! We’ve had members come back to us years later with great updates, so there’s always hope!

 

Since I don’t know your current setup, I’ll need to make a few assumptions. A G4 gas meter is quite common and works well for most homes and even some small businesses. From what you’ve shared, it sounds like the installation of your larger boiler and stove has increased the gas demand in your home, and you’ve been dealing with an under-pressurized system for a while now.

 

It’s important to note that when your bigger boiler was put in, the installer or plumber should have tested the system to ensure it met regulations. If they had done this properly, they would likely have recommended upgrading your meter from a U6 to a U16 for a higher flow rate. When we do a meter replacement, we typically only switch to a higher-rated U16 if a customer specifically asks for it, as seems to be the case with you. If it wasn't specifically requested, we usually just replace it with something similar to what was already there.

 

I’m afraid we may not be able to cover the cost of an upgraded meter because, if the installer had recommended it to support the new appliances, it would have fallen to you to cover that expense at the time. We’ve been working with the information that was available, which now looks to be inaccurate, indicating that the meter is undersized.

 

It seems like SGN needs to step in and increase the gas flow to your home. Once that’s taken care of, your supplier, Octopus, can arrange for the correct meter to be installed and get your supply back up and running. They typically prefer to wait on the installation until SGN has done their work to avoid any complications. 

 

If you or anyone in your household is vulnerable, please let Octopus know; they can put you on the Priority Services Register, which may help speed things along in case there’s any risk to your safety. In the meantime, consider using space heaters or electric blankets to stay warm while they sort things out!

yeah, dad’s called OVO for the third time, will see if the boiler installer guy was wrong or if OVO replaced our meter wrong and see if they have a record of what was there before they replaced it.

As boiler was installed before 2017, and gas meter was installed 2017, so was undersized then for sure. But your right, depends on what the meter before that was.

 

Already on the PSR, but not sure if they knew that when they quoted us 6 to 8 weeks, will have to see how it goes, thanks

I’m curious to know if they still have a record of the meter replacement and what happened during that time. If you can find out, I’d love to hear about it!

 

It might be a good idea for your dad to get in touch with them to check what they have on file for him regarding the Priority Services Register. If he has any health conditions, they might be able to prioritise his case, especially since he shouldn't be without heating for too long. Let me know how it goes as there's no harm asking again cancellations can happen.
