What is the Warm Home Discount (WHD)?

The Warm Home Discount scheme is a one-off £150 discount off your electricity bill. If you’re eligible, your electricity supplier will apply the discount to your bill. The money is not paid to you.

You’ll usually get the discount automatically if you’re eligible. You only need to apply if you’re on a low income in Scotland - contact your energy supplier to apply. If you’re with OVO, you can do that through this form.

You may be able to get the discount on your gas bill instead if your supplier provides you with both gas and electricity and you’re eligible. Contact your supplier to find out.

If you need some assistance completing the WHD application when it, please contact our support team

How to get the discount

You’ll get a letter between late October 2025 and early January 2026 if:

  • you’re eligible for the scheme
  • you might be eligible for the scheme, but you need to give more information

Contact the Warm Home Discount Scheme if you do not get a letter by early January 2026.

If you live in Scotlandearn a low income and do not receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit then you should complete this form.

Please note, if you previously registered your interest (before 28/10/25) this did not count as completing a Warm Home Discount application.

Please do not apply via the form if you live in England or Wales, or live in Scotland and receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit. We’ll automatically discount your bill if you’re eligible.

If you live in Northern Ireland, find out more about the Affordable Warmth Scheme instead.

Eligibility for the Warm Home Discount

Following Government changes to the scheme a few years back, eligibility for the Warm Home Discount depends on where you live:

If you live in England or Wales

You qualify if you either:

If you live in Scotland

You qualify if you either:

Just found out that I’m not eligible for the warm home discount anymore as I don’t have an EPC, Energy Performance certificate. This is now part of the Governments criteria for the WHD, not just what benefits you receive.   Firstly, I’d never heard of an EPC, and secondly it appears that my council landlord didn’t know either!

Spent the last half an hour talking to a baffled council employee from the Estate management dept. She is going to find out why one hasn’t been issued.

So, if you haven’t had a letter yet, best to go on .gov and do their eligibility test, as that’s the way I found out about not having an EPC

I’m not aware of the need for an EPC but it is mentioned regarding finding the size and age of the property https://www.gov.uk/check-if-youre-eligible-for-warm-home-discount

When I called the WHD help line today to ask why after receiving the WHD for years I was now not eligible, he told me it was because my council property didn’t have an EPC.

He said to call the council as I legally should have one.  Sadly the 3 different departments I was bounced through didn’t seem to have a clue. The first two had never heard of an EPC, the last one said he’d heard of it but didn’t know what dept I should be passed onto!

I’m still waiting to hear back from the council at this moment.

The EPC checker I looked at last night doesn’t have my address, or my next-door neighbours address on it.

I’m on the same benefits as I have been for a while now, but sadly it seems under the scheme I’m no longer eligible.

Not sure about council landlords but certainly private landlords need an EPC done as there’s now a requirement that the property has to be rated E at least. Also if a house is put on the market for selling it needs an EPC.

All council properties have to have an EPC, so I’ve been told today.

This was the email I received from OVO on 8 November:

Great news. You're getting the Warm Home Discount.
This is a government-run scheme that gives a one-off payment of £150 to help keep your home warm over winter.
The Department for Work and Pensions put you forward for the Discount, as you meet the necessary criteria.
Want to know more? Read about the Warm Home Discount.
Your £150 is on its way
We'll credit your energy account with £150 by the 20/12/2022.

We hope you have a warm and happy winter.

I haven’t seen it yet, so the best bet is sometime before Christmas. If it hasn’t arrived by 31 March, contact the DWP.
