How can I apply for the Warm Home Discount?

Hi all,

Do we know when the Warm Home Discount application opens this year please? And any details on the changes…..

What is the Warm Home Discount (WHD)?

 

The Warm Home Discount scheme is a one-off £150 discount off your electricity bill. If you’re eligible, your electricity supplier will apply the discount to your bill. The money is not paid to you.

 

You’ll usually get the discount automatically if you’re eligible. You only need to apply if you’re on a low income in Scotland - contact your energy supplier to apply. If you’re with OVO, you can do that through this form.

 

You may be able to get the discount on your gas bill instead if your supplier provides you with both gas and electricity and you’re eligible. Contact your supplier to find out.
 

If you need some assistance completing the WHD application when it, please contact our support team. 

 

 

How to get the discount

 

You’ll get a letter between late October 2025 and early January 2026 if:

  • you’re eligible for the scheme
  • you might be eligible for the scheme, but you need to give more information

 

Contact the Warm Home Discount Scheme if you do not get a letter by early January 2026.

 

If you live in Scotland, earn a low income and do not receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit then you should complete this form.

 

Please note, if you previously registered your interest (before 28/10/25) this did not count as completing a Warm Home Discount application.

 

Please do not apply via the form if you live in England or Wales, or live in Scotland and receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit. We’ll automatically discount your bill if you’re eligible.

As I wasn't on the list for warm home discount last year, when can I apply for this winter

Howdy @BikerBill ,

You’ll already be on the list if you qualify. No action will be required as the DWP will figure things out for you.

Don’t count me on this, but I think it’s either one of two methods:

  • DWP notifies ALL energy suppliers as to everyone who qualifies and the each supplier filters the list down to find accounts with matching details, discarding any that don’t match
  • Energy suppliers provide the DWP with their customer lists and the DWP does the filtering to report back who matches their records as eligible

My guess is that the first scenario is more likely, but either way OVO will be notified if you’re eligible and it’ll be handled from there.

From the Age Uk website:

 

“How do I claim the Warm Home Discount?

In winter 2022-23, most eligible households will get Warm Home Discount automatically.

This is different from previous years, when you had to claim the money from your supplier if you weren't claiming the Guarantee Credit portion of Pension Credit.

To decide whether you get the discount, the government will look at your circumstances on a specific date, known as the 'qualifying date'. For 2022-23, this is 21 August 2022.”

 

Given the DWP have a really appalling record of computing pensions (their core task) I think this has disaster written all over it.

Eon and EDF customer. Don't think smart meters are worth the expense.

Not yet, but soon! OVO needs to wait for the government to make the next move before it can do anything further.
