Moving from THTC to another tariff- Will all consumer units be connected by Ovo to the new meter ?

We have THTC with consumer units for Storage heaters, fixed appliances & lighting/mains.

Will we be able to move to Economy 9 when the new meter is installed ?

Will all consumer units be connected by Ovo to the new meter ?

Can the power be delivered without being on a timer so we can manually control the heating.

Would like some idea of where we from here & whether the future will be more expensive.

Thanks

I can answer those for you.

When you contact OVO to arrange the migration/upgrade, you’ll be able to discuss the available tariff options. If Economy 9 is offered to you, feel free to select it. Otherwise, you’ll need to go for one of the options that does get offered. This will be done before any work is carried out. They are best placed to advise on costs.

OVO will migrate all wiring between the existing main fuse, meter and consumer units over to the new meter and reconnect everything. However, everything beyond the consumer unit(s) is your responsibility.

Per the terms of E7, E9 and E10, the meter must control the timings. You’ll be welcome to use the Boost function if you need a top-up though - but use of the Boost function would be at Peak rates.

Did you notice any change in the time your heaters switched off this morning? I’d expect them to come on (just after) midnight tonight. What about the offpeak times on your IHD?

It says we can’t find your meter on the database ...

Could you be looking for the wrong one, then, either the old one(s) or the new one?

The OVO billing system has its own record of information about the supply point, but you have to jump through hoops to find it. I’m not sure how quickly or how often it’s updated, so what you see tomorrow may be different from what you see today. You could take a peek to see what it has to say about your supply point. On your computer,

  1. Visit account.ovoenergy.com and sign in.
  2. Open a new tab in the same browser session and visit
    smartpaymapi.ovoenergy.com/orex/api/supply-points/account/nnnnnnn
substituting your OVO account number for nnnnnnn in the browser’s address bar.

I’ve no idea what you’ll find there, but if you’re lucky, it should give both the MPAN and the Meter Serial Number (MSN) as shown at the top of the meter itself. Yours starts with 22M. If you see a different MSN on the web page, this file hasn’t yet caught up, so the MPAN may not be the right one yet.

It may also tell you something about the tariff timings the meter is configured for (but not the times the heating circuits switch on and off). If you’d like to know what this all means, just use your mouse to highlight everything from “region” to the end, then copy it and paste it into your reply here (everything before “region” is personal stuff, the rest not so). It’s only text.

If you don’t see anything interesting, the file might not even have been created yet. Patience again!

Last, while you’re signed into your account, try visiting https://account.ovoenergy.com/profile/meter-read-frequency. If you can’t find that page, that’s something else still waiting. If it opens for you, you should see a couple of options to choose, but apart from that you may also see a line labelled (wrongly) Electricity meter: serial 17nnnnnnnnnnn. This is not the serial number, but the bottom line of the MPAN currently recorded on your account. Does that match any of the MPANs you’ve found elsewhere?

Have fun!

Where did you get the new one from? Most customers have to look at a bill to find it …

From my online account in the meter readings section.

I used the Citizens Advice meter finder to check the national database

I can only see the Meter Serial Number there. That is unique to the meter itself. The MPAN is unique to the supply. The MPAN doesn’t usually change just because you get a new meter or change supplier, but in your case the whole supply arrangement changed when you were moved off THTC. Did you check the profile page as I suggested?

I can only see where to submit an address when I go down that route. Since I don’t have an address in Scotland, I couldn’t go any further. Perhaps I’m looking at the wrong page; this is where I ended up: Who is my supplier - SSEN

Lucky you! THTC normally requires two MPANs, one for normal domestic use and the other for heating and hot water, controlled by the RTS. Your new arrangement only needs one MPAN. It may be that the MPID (the 13-digit number) stays the same as the previous domestic one, but the numbers in the top line might change. I’ll be interested to find out what happens. This is how SSEN explain it:

Our THTC meters were replaced with a smart meter 6 weeks ago. According to our online account the MPAN for our previous domestic supply is now the MPAN for our new smart meter.  The other MPAN for the heating part controlled by the RTS will presumably disappear eventually. I hope it is sorted soon because our bills are a mess. We've only been charged for some of the electricity used in the last 6 weeks and the standing charge despite the account showing readings every day.   Until the second MPAN disappears and the bills are sorted we can't move supplier....still being forced to stick with OVO. Apparently this could take up to 6 weeks..... I'm not holding my breath.

Thanks, Cassie. That’s what I expected.

Which plan are you on? And have you found a better one elsewhere? It would be good to have some rates to compare …

Perhaps you’re thinking of taking advantage of your shiny new smart meter to switch to a ToU tariff whose rates change all the time. Please tell!
