Sunday usage when no one at home

The last two Sundays we have been away.  Not anyone one at home.  When I looked on the daily usage chart both Sundays have a higher usage compared to the Monday to Saturday readings.  It happens when we are at home which I can understand but why when there was no one at home?

As said above the high readings may be estimates.

If you open your account online or the app and go to “Meter Readings” it should tell you there whether each reading was “Smart”. “Actual”, or “Estimated”.

(An “Actual” reading is one that you sent in).

Do you have dual fuel with OVO?  Do you have a smart meter on both?  If you have smart meters the usage should be correct, and even accounting for standing charges and standby connections your usage should be less when you are out.  However, if one or both meters are not smart, OVO just estimates your usage based on previous months/years and then when you send your readings, they should be corrected but will never be exact on a daily basis without a smart meter.

Where are you viewing your usage? On the new Beta version of the site, this is what I see for my electricity usage for last week.

As you can see, my usage on Friday was greater than my usage on the other days. (I do know why this is). If I did not know why it had happened, my next step would be to look at the data for that Friday (9th October). Here is what that looks like.

There are a few times when my usage was quite a bit above average. Thinking about the times they represent. The first time was when we were cooking dinner and the other times are what our dishwasher cycle uses. Other minor variations will be caused by the fridge/freezer going on/off, the fish tank thermostat going on/off, using the kettle etc.

My gas results can be explained in a similar way. This past week my heating has actually come on at 6.30 am (It is scheduled to do so, when necessary) three times!!

I can do this because I have smart meters. I have no idea how the new site behaves for customers with traditional meters.

Hey @mycat

I’m glad to see a few of out community members have already stopped by with some really helpful advice on this.

It would be helpful to know some more information such as whether this is coming from the gas or electric? If this is based on actual/smart or estimated reading? If you could share some screenshots of the usage pages that would be helpful.

We’ve got a few topics on the Forum which may also be helpful here:

I don’t have a smart meter and only electric.  Your answers are all interesting.  Having had a look at the meter readings it was estimated.  Since then I have sent in the correct reading.  Thanks all x

You could always consider asking for a smart meter. It's optional before the replacement date but after that I would say it's highly likely that it would be replaced by a smart meter on the basis that very few non-smart meters are now available. Just a thought as it would most likely do away with estimated readings so your bill will remain accurate without manual readings.

Reducing my yearly fossil fuel usage with an EV (-900 litres petrol saving about £950/year), A2AHP (-8,700 kWh gas, cost neutral) and Timed Immersion heater (-1,500 kWh gas, £20/year more expensive but reducing as the gas price goes up)
