Hi i need some advice please i have just been advised by Octopus that they can't take me on as a Solar Panel  Customer because Ovo won't let me go due to debit on my account. I registered with them in April kept in contact  because they weren't contacting me they assured me everything was fine  until August only then did they inform me that there is a problem with import because i am still a customer with Ovo. They also raised a complaint for me but have told me thst they can't backdate any earnings from Solar Panels either. Ovo have told me due to my new heating sytem they don't do an Economy 7 heating tarriff....even though they promised me that they could when i initially explained to them about the new installation. Can anyone advise me please?

You appear to have 2 questions there:

The first about exporting solar.
The second about Economy 7.

For the solar export question:

Whilst you can have SEG with a different company than your energy supplier, you appear to want to switch your current export agreement with OVO to a new export agreement with Octopus - is that correct?

Or are you wanting to switch both your supply and your export agreement to Octopus?

If your supply account is in arrears then that will be the reason why that switch has been blocked.

For the E7 question

If you had just asked if OVO have E7 tariffs then the answer would be ‘Yes they do’, however there is a condition to that yes.

Although OVO do have E7 tariffs whether a customer can have one or not depends on their current meter type.
If your property currently has a single-rate meter, you cannot immediately switch to an E7 tariff because of technical limitations

OVO currently lacks the functionality to reprogram a single-rate smart meter into an E7 meter remotely.
Instead it would need an engineer to come out and swap the single-rate meter for a multi-rate smart meter - and they won’t do that (at least not for free*) if your current single rate meter is working and within it’s certification lifetime.

*Note that you can arrange to have the current single-rate meter swapped to a multi rate type, but that is non-essential work and as such it would be chargeable. (And as your account is in already arrears they may not accept any such non-essential work until your account is back in credit).
The current cost of swapping a single-rate meter to a multi-rate meter is £106.

I said, Hey - Watts going on.

My issues aren't really with Ovo they are with Octopus who i registered my Solar Panels with in April. I kept in touch to see what was happening with the registration i was being assured everything was going ahead fine until August when they informed me that there was a problem  and they won't back date the energy i have earned during those 5 months. My Solar Panels came with the new heating system and have never been registered with Ovo. But i felt i had to move ti Octopus as Ovo doesn't cater for E7.

Hey @Viv1966

Sorry to hear about this, though I’m glad to see Nukecad stopped by with lots of helpful advice.

Did they say specifically what the issue was with the import and still being an OVO customer. It’s typically fine to be supplied by one company and have export with another, I know we have many customers who only have one part with us, ie supplied by us but have export with another company and vice versa.

Do let us know how you get on with all of this.

Hi @Abby_OVO , they said that because Ovo won't let me switch to them, they could only let me have SEG at 4p an hour. Therefore i am assuming the reason is its hardly worth anything also that they can't backdate any earnings i have made on my Solar Panels. I feel a little stuck on what to do but absolutely furious that nobody has informed me of the problem until now and Octopus have made no attempt to contact me about it  even though i was frequently asking for updates  on how rhe registration was going.

In addition to @juliamc’s answer the solar panels will normally offset your electricity usage and the match between heating and solar is best in spring and autumn. In the winter you will be using most if not all your your solar at your tariff rate which is much higher than any SEG you can get. The issue is not having the SEG in the summer when you own use doesn't match the output of the panels by a large amount.

A home battery is another way of using your solar power. Useful if getting a decent SEG doesn't work out.

Reducing my yearly fossil fuel usage with an EV (-900 litres petrol saving about £950/year), A2AHP (-8,700 kWh gas, cost neutral) and Timed Immersion heater (-1,500 kWh gas, £20/year more expensive but getting less)

Hi @Viv1966

Although you are currently concerned with the solar export rate you’ll find that soon you won’t be exporting so much, as the days get shorter and you will be using the heating. I think you should be thinking more about the electricity you’ll use over the winter for your various heaters (I think you’ve said before that you have a mix of storage heaters and electric radiators, and you have an electric shower). If an E7 tariff is the best option for you I wonder if your landlord could fund the meter exchange. I remember you saying that they wanted to replace your non-functioning oil boiler with a heat pump, then they changed that to fitting two storage heaters and an electric radiator. That strikes me as a cheaper option for them, but leaving you with the problem of paying for running costs. Particularly as they left you with no central heating system last winter hence your increased electricity bill now, I think they should bear some of the costs.

If you can get the meter fitted at their expense, then move to an E7 tariff and sort out a payment plan with OVO, the move to Octopus (or another energy company with a good export rate) can wait till next spring.

Hi @juliamc  nice to hear from you again, this is a housing association who are my landlords and i think they'll laugh at me for asking that question.   But i do appreciate your suggestion  and yes you are right, the increased bill is due to being left with no heating system.  But i think Octopus are the main ones at fault here for not keeping me informed of an issue yet i was contacting them frquently asking for updates!  Now i seem to be stuck with a load of unused energy  that could be being put to very good use against my bill  after all that wonderful sunshine we had but intense heat. I feel i am stuck in no mans land here and not sure what to do.
