OVO have told me they can’t remove my dual meter. I moved in to a new property with 4 old storage heaters. The house EPC is rated an E.

I can get a grant for an air source heat pump but the installers say that second meter must be removed. Storage heaters have not been used since I moved in and the meter obviously hasn’t either.

as we get closer to Autumn I am keen to get a the new central heating system installed, however 2 long calls to OVO (on hold for most of it) and told they don’t have anyone available to do it. What can I do?

OVO said that the Air source heat pump will run of one meter which I am well aware of, that was not my question, it was getting the second redundant one removed.

Hi @jud Clark , from what we’ve seen here it’s not an easy (or quick) fix - although it should be. A number of people have had meters removed but still get charged the standing charge as the database seems a problem to update. Others have taken to switching supplier to make the removal easier .. obviously that’s your choice

I recently moved into a house with dual meter for 4 storage heaters. As it is very poor in energy performance rating (E) I am receiving a grant for an air source heat pump. The storage heaters have never been switched on by me nor has the meter reading changed.

I have been told by the company who will do the air source install that I need to only have the one meter as the other is redundant and needs removed.

After being on hold twice today with OVO about the same question “please remove the meter” for well over an hour, I have been told they don’t have the service available to do it.

Soon when we go into autumn I will need some form of heating in my house, but can’t get installed until 1 meter only, what can I do?

Hey @jud Clark

Sorry to hear about not being able to get the meter removed?

Would you be able to post some photos of the meter set up so we can see what may be the issue for the Support Team? We can also check with our specialist teams to see if we could in fact have the meter removed.

bottom picture is the storage heater meter which I need removed

Thanks! Bear with us for about 20 minutes while we figure out the spaghetti

Your image shows 2 ‘budgie’ meters which have been wired to separately show the peak and off-peak usage.
I would expect a new 5 terminal meter to be used to combine both of the connections and provide the same service.
I don’t think that I have seen a set up like yours previously - perhaps that has confused things

To add to what’s been said, I have seen this setup before, albeit usually with much older meters. If memory serves, most of the time it’s a somewhat simple swap, but be ready for it to take a bit longer

Hey @jud Clark thanks for sending those over, looks like that’s been helpful, with some great insight so far!

I’m wondering if our trusted engineer might know what we can do here, sorry to pull you in but @Lukepeniket_OVO any ideas on this one?

Thanks for the comments, just to say again, all my storage heaters ( of which there are 4) will be removed and having a new heating system (air source heat pump) installed so the second meter not required at all.

The installers for the ASHP are awaiting confirmation of the removal so they can fit soon after so I will not be going into autumn with no heating.

Another question, OVO workers don’t seem to think there is a standing charge for a dual meter, however how can I check how this compares to other tariffs if I am not requiring my current tariff if it is specific to having 2 meters and only using half the system, some answers would be great.

Hey @jud Clark,

Thanks for bringing this interesting topic to the Forum!

With OVO you’d pay a standing charge per supply so if there are two MPAN numbers at the property, you’d pay two standing charges.
