Hi there!

I have received my warm home discount £150 voucher.

It's telling me to take my voucher to my local post office as its come on the letter from Ovo.

I want to know,  do I take my pre payment key/card  to the post office also???

Any information would be much appreciated!!

Voucher or Token:

For traditional PAYG meters (not smart meters), a voucher code may be provided, which can be used to top up the key or card, and the credit is then applied to the meter.

Ok… So… Here’s the answer…

After digging even deeper and quite literally pulling some of my contacts out of bed (thanks, much appreciated!) I’ve figured it out.

You need to visit the Post Office because this year, these Vouchers are being issued as Post Office Energy Vouchers rather than using the Paypoint system of previous years. OVO isn’t the only supplier doing it this way. Going to Paypoint will NOT work this time around.

You need to do what the letter instructs you to do - if the postmaster messes up, you need to take it up with their manager rather than OVO as they’ve all been told to process these.

Any Post Office staff who either reject the voucher by redirecting you to Paypoint OR just giving you the cash aren’t following the proper process for Post Office Payout - they risk not getting reimbursed for it as well which could unbalance their books.

The Warm Home Discount (WHD) is a government scheme providing a one-off £150 discount on electricity bills for eligible households, including those on Pay As You Go (PAYG) with OVO Energy. The scheme is typically applied automatically between October and March, but those in Scotland on low incomes may need to apply. For PAYG customers, the discount is usually applied as credit to the meter, often via a voucher or remote token issue.

Find out more by heading to our website: https://www.ovoenergy.com/guides/energy-guides/warm-home-discount-scheme.

How the Warm Home Discount Works with OVO's PAYG Customers:

  • Automatic Discount:

Eligible PAYG customers with OVO Energy will typically have the £150 WHD credit applied directly to their meter, often as a remote token issue.

  • Voucher or Token:

For traditional PAYG meters (not smart meters), a voucher code may be provided, which can be used to top up the key or card, and the credit is then applied to the meter.

  • Checking Eligibility:

You can check your eligibility for the Warm Home Discount on the GOV.UK website or through OVO Energy's website.

  • Contacting OVO:

If you believe you're eligible but haven't received the discount, you can contact OVO Energy for assistance.

  • PAYG Benefits:

OVO's PAYG service allows customers to manage their energy spending, top up online or at shops, and offers emergency credit.

End of the day, I WASN'T able to use the voucher and trust me on this , I am not traveling the whole of Scotland to find out what post office I am able to use the voucher!! Then the post office shouldn't of agreed to take the voucher when some post office's system's aren't able to take that key((surely that we can agree on?!?)) Next year they are gonna have to change it, because I'm not gonna be on the phone for over an hour, speaking to 4 different people to finally get it sorted!! I will continue this conversation but I want a reply from you "Blastoise186" on this question... Can you remember what they did last year regarding the £150 home warm discount ??

Firstly, you don’t get to make demands as to who replies to you - we reserve the right to terminate our responses for any reason. Do not make that demand again as it will be ignored. I should remind you that the Forum Moderators don’t work nights or weekends and I’m also a Fire Service Volunteer with duties that run randomly (such as all day today), so we can’t be here 24/7.

Last year, the Paypoint system was used - but it required multiple shop visits, wasn’t very transparent and generated TONS of complaints that folks didn’t get their credits even though they did and weren’t paying attention to the Meter after the credit went on.

The intention of using POP was to eliminate that this year on the basis you WOULD see it go on immediately.

As I said, migrating to Smart Meters will happen eventually. Your best bet is to do it now before you eventually get forced to.

Evidently, while Post Office Payout is very capable of dumping cash into your pocket or bank account - because they can do a direct deposit via your debit card instead of handing over the cash - it is not as capable of PAYG Energy Top-Ups as they claim it to be...

Last year I never had to use a paypoint for the home warm discount, OVO sent me a cheque of £150! I thought you would of known that!! The only time I had to use multiple paypoint visits was during lockdown because of covid-19. I think I'll consider changing supplier during summer next year 👌

That won’t fix your problem either. All suppliers use the same systems, so all you’re doing is moving the problem elsewhere.

As for that £150 cheque? That probably wasn’t WHD - they don’t usually do WHD cheques for security reasons.

Yes 100% OVO sent me a cheque last year!

As I said, cheques are not the standard method because:

  • Security reasons - they get lost in the post too easily
  • Fraud - some folks may attempt to do fraudulent stuff with them
  • Theft - just about anyone can cash a cheque and you might never get it
  • Purpose - WHD is meant for energy credit, not cash in your pocket
  • Speed - cheques take literally forever to process, but the Paypoint, Smart Meter auto-credit and Post Office Payout methods can be done in just one day

They are by exception ONLY. If they were the standard method, I’d have told you that two days ago.

I don’t need to work in the Energy Industry to unlock its secrets. In actual fact, I’ve never worked in the industry at all, let alone worked for OVO. However, by being on this Forum for so long, the industry has started to trust me and taught me many things that are never usually revealed publicly. That is how I know these systems so well - because I’ve been granted permission to know about them in ways that the public don’t normally get to see. I don’t make mistakes easily when it comes to this stuff.

The true identity of the user behind this name is deliberately only known to about 10 people in the industry however. If I were to identify myself to anyone else by that name, they wouldn’t recognise me. It’s a thing that’s required for various complicated reasons, but lets just say it makes it easy for the industry to recognise who I am - because this identity you see before you is consistent and easy for them to find.

As you now know I couldn't redeem the voucher I got and I'm not lying about it! You can phone the post office, Perth, high street. But like I said I've managed to get it sorted. What advice would you give ? for other people who are unable to redeem their voucher because of the same reason I couldn't!

In those cases, one should make a complaint to the Post Office regarding issues with the Post Office Payout service. That’s where the fault lies.

You’ll need to excuse me, my duties start shortly and I need to head out.

So they make a complaint about the post office.... Okay that's that done! But still unable to redeem it. Would the next course of action to phone OVO to get it sorted ?

If push comes to shove, redeem it for cash and then head to a Paypoint store to top-up.

As I mentioned, my Fire Service Volunteer duties commence shortly, so i will be unavailable for the rest of the day.
