Tesla charging with Charge Anytime - does OVO need access to my Tesla account?
Hi - I am thinking of switching to OvO to benefit from the charging of my Tesla, I just wanted to ask, does the OVO charge anytime need access to my Tesla account. If this is the case, then this is a big data flaw/privacy concern.
I ask this as I wonder how the app knows the car is being charged at a given time?
Thank you.

Hi @jwc2023 ,
As I understand things, Charge Anytime only talks to the EV itself, it doesn’t have access to the rest of the Tesla account and cannot make changes to it at all. Tesla would have reviewed what OVO/Kaluza wanted to do and worked with them to figure things out safely.
The system basically just asks the EV whether or not it’s charging and if so, where it currently is at that time to see whether it’s at home or not.
If you’d rather not do things that way, you can connect directly to a compatible charger instead which would mean Charge Anytime can’t touch your Tesla account or EV at all.
The OVO anytime seems to charge at anytime during the day that there is a surplus demand.
I set the Kaluza app to the time I need the car fully charged and my charger, an Indra, sort out the requirement. At 10p kwh its a no brainer. I have no knowledge of Tesla but once I deleted the time settings I had within the car system everything worked well.
When needing a rapid charge away from home it works in the normal way, seems like most rapid chargers are at around 70/80p kwh. I understand Tesla chargers have their own rate for Teslas.
What’s the verdict, @jwc2023 - is Charge Anytime with Direct to Vehicle or via a smart charger for you?
Hi - thanks for all the comments/replies. Soooo it turns out my current supplier has changed its energy rates post 1st April and when comparing them to the OVO simpler plan, there is very little difference in both energy prices. Therefore, I have made the switch to OVO so I can take advantage of the reduced rate when charging the EV. I just hope this works as well as advertised.
I would like to ask, does it matter how long the car takes to charge i.e do you get only a set amount of charging hours or does it not matter how long it takes.
Thanks again all, much appreciated for the helpful advice/comments.
It won’t matter too much. You’ll get as many hours as possible during each Session, even if it’s not one continuous charge. :)
oh thats great, does it matter what time of the day too?
Nope! Just make sure you have the schedules set up how you like them. The system does the rest
Just to update anyone who was also asking the question on Tesla account access. The Charge anytime app requests the login details for Tesla account, along with any 2 factor authentication code. Lets just hope they stay true to their privacy policy...
Can anyone advise on the Anytime app in relation to savings etc.
Basically, when I go into the savings section its says just that, what I have saved, but is it not possible to see what the total charge actually costs? i. e. If I used 57.9KWh on a particular charge do I just times that by 10 pence. At the moment this is just telling me saved, but saved from what total amount if that make sense?
The savings should be against what your current electric tariff rates are. So if your tariff rates are normally say, 18.76p/kWh (I’m using mine as an example) the savings would be 8.76p/kWh.
Hope this helps
ok I see thanks for the swift reply. Also, when I charge the car and the dashboard shows ‘ready by’ am I always paying the low rate 10p unless I choose option to ‘charge now’
Yup
Right, I have a new issue, unless I’m doing this wrong. A few times now I start a charge in my Tesla app, the charge starts then shortly afterwards the charge has stopped. My car is at 77% so i wanted to top it up during the evening to 90% ready for the next day, at 1am this morning i had the same issue, starts charging for a while, then i wake up and the charge hasn't happened! Any ideas anyone?
thanks again.
Sounds like the Smart Home Team might want to look into that. Send them an email via smarthome@ovoenergy.com .
Yes I have sent them a mail, await to hear anything back. Not good if you need a full charge and travel first thing in the morning, luckily I’m not. Failing that I guess you could hit the ‘charge now’ feature which ill pay full rate...which defeats the object of why I signed up to this...
Do they have a phone number instead?
Email only I’m afraid. It’s a small team so they probably can’t take calls.
This is the whole problem...most companies are now run on shoestrings…
I await their reply.
Thanks for the help.
There’s only a few thousand members who have Charge Anytime right now. I suspect things will expand as that grows

This sounds like you’re using the tesla app and not the Charge Anytime app (Android app here, and Apple app here) to manage your EV’s charging.
The Smart Home team will advise the same: make sure to only use the dedicated Charge Anytime app (this is for direct to vehicle Charge Anytime customers). FYI @Blastoise186
Ok, we’ll I tried both methods..
If you look at this screenshot you can see the only option is to start an urgent charge at midnight to 07:00!
Hi @jwc2023
Make sure to disable scheduled charging in your Tesla app so that it does not conflict with the Charge Anytime app.
The “Start Urgent Charge” button will instantly start charging your car at the normal higher rate - it won’t wait until midnight.
If you have 32A charging capability then midnight till 7am should be plenty enough time to top you up. I also found with the Charge Anytime app that if my car charge level was really low that it would sometimes not wait until midnight to start charging the car.
What charger do you have?
Hi Domino138 - yes I never have the scheduled charging set in the Tesla app.
I know the start urgent charge wont wait, but is there a set time for example 8pm - 7am when energy is greenest, if so, then between those hours you should not get the option of an urgent charge, only smart charge?
I have a project EV charger
Charge Anytime is a type of use tariff, @jwc2023 - the tech behind the add on, Kaluza Flex, does all the hard work of knowing when the grid is green/cheap, so all you have to do is decide when you want your EV ready by and to what charge %.
If you need the EV urgently, you can charge via the ‘Urgent charge’.

Hopefully now you’re only using this charge anytime app you’re seeing it correctly charge?

Ok so I proved this issue again last night.
I plugged my car in around 7pm, went into the app and the app said the car was charging, great! all seems good. I then check on the charge via the app around 21:00 and its stopped charging, stating ‘Charging next after 22:00’.
So, I thought ok, greener energy after this time perhaps? I check back in the app after 10pm and indeed it did start charging.
However, I then wake up and it has stopped at some point leaving me with still only 45% charge.
At this rate I may need to switch to another supplier as I’m clearly not getting the cheaper rates i singed up for, and I’m being left with an un-charged car each morning! Not impressed up to now.
Sorry to hear this, @jwc2023 - I totally understand you need this sorted.
If you’ve turned off any scheduled charging from your Tesla app, you’re not using it to manage charge and you’re still not able to get to your requested charge % by your ready time on the Charge Anytime app, it does indicate an issue. Please flag this to our OVO Smart Home team and feel free to link them to this topic to save you having to type anything: smarthome@ovoenergy.com
