Renault 5 E Tech has now stopped charging

We have a brand new Hypervolt Charger, and OVO as our utility provider, and I'm using the OVO Charge App on their Charge Anytime rate as it suits our lifestyle.

Hypervolt has a direct charging arrangement with OVO, so those two apps seem to work seamlessly, and (as I would expect) the Charger App shows OVO setting the scheduling, and the OVO App shows the Hypervolt charger.

Because we have a flexible lifestyle we don’t need to charge overnight and set schedules, so all we’re trying to do is the most basic operation which is to plug in the car whenever it needs a charge, and at any time of day, and the OVO tariff gives us a flat discounted rate for that.

We had eight successful charges. I would plug in, make sure the car scheduling (via MyRenualt App) was Off, and set to Instantaneous Charging and then click on “Charge Now” in the car App. Although there would be a pause each time of a few minutes, and the command seems to not get through a few times, this charging worked 8 times in a row.

(The car has never charged directly from plugging in, it has always required a command to trigger it. It would be wonderful if I can just connect it to the charger and it starts charging, but it has never done that.)

Then, on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning last week the car simply wouldn’t charge. I’ve tried all the usual workarounds:

  1. close the apps reopen them,
  2. take the My Renault app off the phone, then re-load and re-pair the car with the app,
  3. soft reset the car,
  4. make sure that the Car charge scheduling is not switched on so it conflicts with the OVO schedule,
  5. set the OVO schedule for the “car ready” time and the OVO schedule told me the car would start charging at 7:30 in the morning, and it didn’t.
  6. lock and unlock while connected, and have the key near the car
  7. The final override was to press the “cancel all schedule charges” button in the charger flap on the car, to start immediate charging, but this didn’t work, and then
  8. finally to go back to the OVO app to set "Urgent Charge", which means that overrides everything and we charge it to higher cost rate per kilowatt, but that didn’t work either. My first two charges were using this more expensive emergency tariff as I was getting used to charging, so it had been working.

Throughout all of this, the Car display would be saying “Checking” and the charger indicator on the car simply flashed white, and from the Renault manual this means “Charger Not Connected Correctly”, but of course it was plugged in, and I waggle tested it, and it required the ‘unlock’ button to remove it.

The Hypervolt and OVO Apps also both showed the car as connected, but waiting for a charge to start, so they had both located the car as being connected to the charger.

I also did a diagnostic check on the Hypervolt charger and this showed everything working as it should.

The car has returned to the dealers for checking.

My key question, Why would I get 8 successful charges, and then not able to charge again?

Morning @Simon550, and a warm welcome to the OVO Forum. I’ve added the EV badge to your Forum profile.

I’m sorry to hear about the issues you’re experiencing - this sounds very frustrating indeed. @salerio had a similar issues a few months ago:

In this instance, the fix was:

My issue is sorted, turned out to be an issue with the Renault back end. I had to sync the car again with the servers. Since I did that I have done two successful Charge Anytime charges. Both worked perfectly

@Marcel Bertie had a similar issue documented here:

This was a different charger to yours, and the fix:

I think the issue was with the 'dumb' Pod Point. Although no schedules were set in it, the 'smart' mode was selected instead of 'manual' mode, which I think blocked Ovo from starting. In manual last night, everything seems to have charged and recorded in the OVO app!!

I know @juliamc was also having issues with a Renault 5, and maybe will have some advice for you here.

I’m hoping that the dealer will be able to see what the issue is, but in case you need to speak to Renault over the phone or by live chat, you can do so here.

Our Charge Anytime team can be reached via email at chargeanytime@ovo.com.

Please keep us updated as to how you get on with the dealer.

Hello Ben

thank you for your prompt reply.

the car is back with Renault and they can’t seem to find an issue yet, and have put charge in through three different instantaneous charges.

they are now going to try a home charge with OVO.

knowing that Hypervolt and OVO have integrated Apps it would be really helpful if you or Hypervolt could produce a video tutorial explaining how to set up each App for successful charging. I can’t seem to find this information in fact much of the guidance conflicts with each other.

Hi @Ben_OVO and @Simon550 . I am by no means an expert with this and I managed to get our E-tech to smart charge with advice from the MyEnergi forum!

We have a MyEnergi Zappi 2 charger and we’re with Octopus, our problem seemed to stem from the car not communicating with Octopus. In the end I got round this by defining the car on the Octopus app as a Renault Alpine rather than an E-tech. Because the Octopus app didn’t have the Alpine on its compatibility list it enabled the charger to control the smart charge rather than Octopus. I don’t know if that helps at all.

When I first read through your post I wasn’t sure if you were getting the OVO discounted rate for all of your successful charges. It seemed that you were getting an immediate charge in the daytime, and I wondered if that was because the grid was “green” with all the solar that’s around at the moment, so the Charge Anytime slots coincided with your first 8 charge sessions and you didn’t have the problem of the E-tech going into “sleep mode”. Please accept my apologies if I’ve got that wrong!

Hi @juliamc,

Thank you for your input.

I did also reach the point where I was thinking that OVO was pausing the charge until a time of greener energy, so then I attempted to use the OVO “Urgent Charge” to check whether the system was in fact working, but Urgent Charge didn't work either.

Call me naive, but I did also think that “Charge Anytime” meant that I could charge at anytime….

In my set-up, the OVO Charge App works with Renault 5 EV, and also “sees” the car connected and also reads the Hypervolt Charger, and likewise, the Hypervolt App also “sees” the car connected, and also has OVO registered as taking charge of the scheduling, and finally, my car scheduling is also configured to “Off” so all of the variables seem to be in place, yet the car does not charge.

While the car is away still with Renault, I am continuing research on this to be better placed when (or if)  it returns, and my most useful spell was yesterday when I did a deep dive with Google Ai into my specific issues.

If anyone wants a “nerd out”, the link is here.

One of the key things might be to disable “Random Start” in my Hypervolt, this is where the charger has permission to delay charging to await more favourable tariffs, but it could also be a period of up to 10 minutes where the car may cease to communicate with OVO and Hypervolt, and “forget” the command to charge?

There are several other useful tips in there as well such as switching off charger at fuse box to re-boot it, and un-pairing Hypervolt from OVO and re-pairing. I does beg the question though, does it really need to take an hour or more to (hopefully) properly set a home charge?

This is my first EV (I’ve always been a sceptic) but I had hoped home charging was going to be the least of my issues with it! I thought I would be more concerned about range and public charging on longer trips, with the enforced stops that these require. I haven’t got to that yet.

Luckily, this isn’t our only car…..we still have petrol

@Ben_OVO the car stayed with Renault for 2 weeks while we were away on holiday, and they tested charging in various settings (and it worked) but also performed a software update.

We collected the car a week ago, and have since performed 4 out of 4 successful charges.

The key learning (for me) is not to use the MyRenault App for scheduling or charging. On collecting the car new, I was advised by Renault to let the car App lead the charging, but my own experience, and research has since shown this to be problematic and inconsistent.

I said I would share my findings, and here they are.

I have now completed four successful on demand charges at home in the past 7 days, and since I started letting the OVO Charge App lead the charging it seems to be working smoothly.

Here is how mine is set up:
CAR - Renault 5 EV 52kWh (Roland Garros +)
CHARGER - Hypervolt Home Pro 3
ELECTRIC - OVO Charge Anytime
SCHEDULING - Because OVO Charge Anytime is a flat tariff charge to me, and available for 24 hours, I don’t use scheduling, so my requirement is for an immediate charge (using the OVO discounted rate, not Urgent rate), and for a sufficient time to add the required battery level. I usually do this during the day, but I have left the car charging over night twice, with a Car Ready time around midnight/1pm, but then used the car (with charge complete) many hours later.

SET-UP :
  1. Switch off any Charging programmes from the MyRenault App (MR), and also from the car infotainment system. Take off all schedules from MR App, and charge without reference to the MR. N.B. On collecting the car new from Renault, the Sales guy told me to always use the MR App for scheduling and charging. I've found it to be much better without MR, especially because MR has regular outages as well. It's far better to use 2 components, (Electricity and Charger Apps) if you can, rather than adding a 3rd variable to the mix of charging Apps. This means I can’t Precondition the car, but I would rather have a reliable charging programme than the perfect temperature in the car.
  2. In OVO Charge App (OVO), “Account/Devices” add your Hypervolt (H) charger to the OVO app.
  3. In OVO again, in ‘Account/Devices” add your type of car to OVO.
  4. In H, first check the linking of H to OVO Charge Anytime, so that in the H Home screen, "OVO Mode" is showing, so that the two are connected.
  5. In H again, make sure that the toggle in "Charger Settings”/“Random Start” is set to “Disabled” - this stops OVO delaying the start of charging, and the car going to sleep.
  6. Decide what charge level you require for the car (80%?, 100%?), and set this in the Car or MR before thinking about charging.
  7. Then set a "Car Ready" time in OVO before connecting, and it’s best to set this "Car Ready” time several minutes BEFORE connecting the car to the charger to give OVO time to receive the command.
  8. Put in this “Car Ready” time in OVO at least 1 hour later than your connection time, and slightly over the time that is needed to get the charge to your required level, e.g. 80/100% - this stops the car “sleeping” waiting to charge. I have been giving OVO an “Extra” 10-30 minutes more time than is necessary to charge the car to the level that I set.
  9. Connect the H charger cable to the car, with the cable fully uncoiled - to ensure that there is no power loss or heat build-up in the cable.
  10. Check that after plugging your EV in, that the H Home screen is showing the car nearby and connected and that OVO is showing either Smart Charging/Waiting to Smart Charge.
  11. Once connected, the Display in the car charging flap should quickly change from “White/White Flashing” to “Blue” and this means that the charging has started, and H and OVO should also both show charging in process. The MR App should also notify you that charging has commenced, and you can then use the MR to check charging progress.
  12. For charging connection and unconnection there is no need (or place even) to press any buttons in the H App; the H App simply shows you a picture of what is happening.
  13. when charging is complete (and the car display in the charging flap should show as “Green”), simply unlock the car, and then unlock the Charging cable using the Unlock button inside the car charging flap. Both OVO and H will then show charging has stopped.

Below is a Troubleshooting List that I've compiled should the charger not start for some reason. As of yet, I haven't had to do this:

TROUBLESHOOTING :
Connectivity check on the car.
Ensure you have subscribed to Renault Connected Services - To establish communication with your vehicle, you'll need a subscription to Renault Connected Services.

Your Renault Connected Services package will need to include charging control.

From the Car main menu, press “Services”.
The “Settings” menu enables you to adjust Car Connectivity and Data:
- “Data sharing settings”. Ensure that Data Sharing is activated.

OVO AND HYPERVOLT
To resolve a possible connectivity issue between H and OVO, you can refresh the connection in the OVO Charge app by following these steps:
  1. Go to the 'Schedule' section of the app.
  2. Select your charger and tap the refresh option.
  3. Wait 15 minutes for the connection to re-establish before starting your next charge.
If refreshing does not work, the next step is to remove and re-add your charger:

4. Delete the Charger:
  1. Close and reopen the OVO Charge app.
  2. Go to the 'Schedule' section, where you should now see a 'connect a device' option.
  3. Follow the on-screen process to add your car back.
  4. Open the OVO Charge app.
  5. Navigate to the 'Account' section.
  6. Click on 'Devices' at the top.
  7. Select your charger from the list.
  8. Choose the option to 'remove and delete' it.
  9. Re-add the Charger:
After re-adding the charger, please allow 30 to 45 minutes for all connections to fully re-establish. Your vehicle should then be ready for its next charge.

5. If your charger is offline, try resetting the unit by following these steps:
  1. Switch off power to the charger completely at the fuse box to Re-Boot H. Switch off HyperVolt at fuse box and wait 10-15 seconds before switching back on to re-do the “handshake" with OVO
  2. Wait for 2 minutes before turning the power back on.
  3. Allow 10 to 20 minutes for the charger to reconnect online.
Once the charger is back online, you can attempt to re-link following the above steps. If it still stays offline, please reach out to the charger manufacturer for further assistance.

Re-try the steps 1-5 above

CAR SLEEPING AND NOT CHARGING :
The Car can “sleep” after 2-4 minutes following connection if no charging instruction is received, so disconnect the charger and start again.
