Question

New Renault 5 and Pod Point cannot smart charge - what can I do?

Hi all,

I'm new to EV's, and would appreciate help!

I have a Renault 5, which is compatible with OVO.

I have a Pod Point charger which is not.

I have a monthly plan with OVO and a Renault App through which OVO should speak to my car.

I've agreed to all data sharing in my car.

I have my vehicle connected to the Renault App.

All schedules are turned OFF apart from on the OVO app, but the charge repeatedly fails to be performed.

I have managed a charge through the charger once to make sure it actually works, which it does.

I've read forums and tried deleting my vehicle from OVO charge after reinstalling the app, and have done the same on the Renault App.

Any ideas how I can get Ovo Charge to talk to tge car app please?

Thanks

Chris

Hey @Marcel Bertie,

A warm welcome to our community ✋🏻 I’ve given you one of our EV badges for your profile to show you’re an EV owner to other users.

I’m not sure if this will help, but I've noticed that Renault's connected services have sometimes blocked smart charging. I’ve added a link below with some steps you can try on your car’s infotainment system, fingers crossed that it helps. It’s interesting that both you and @juliamc are facing similar issues even with different setups and suppliers. I’ll reach out to someone on the Charge Anytime team to see if they’ve come across this before and if they can share any helpful tips. And remember, you can always give them a call or jump into a live chat! They can look into your account and data to provide you with more detailed help.

Thats great stuff, I'll try later and see what happens! Cheers

Not sure if it is relevant in your case - there are a lot of ducks to get in a row and it’s not always easy to find out which is out of line! - but I had a very similar problem recently with my new EV and charger. My car is an Audi, supported by OVO, but charger is Ohme, which is not. So, set up car with Charge Anytime account, and everything seemed to communicate fine. CA app could see state of car charge, etc. However, it would not smart-charge. Turned out that when I first set up my CA account, I did not specify my location accurately enough and so the CA system did not recognise that it was my car that was charging. The CA team reset my account so that I could re-enter my location, and having done so it all burst into life.

I mention this not because it is a definite diagnosis of your problem but it is something to bear in mind that you might not suspect.

Ah right, that does seem very similar to the issues that I have. Not helped by the glitchy Renault app!

I'll give it a go.

Thanks ☺️

Hey @Marcel Bertie,

Just wanted to check in and see if you’ve had any luck getting your car to connect with Charge Anytime again. Hope all is going well and if you’ve got any questions let us know.

Hi,

Thanks, that's very much appreciated.

I think I've sorted it!

I think the issue was with the 'dumb' Pod Point. Although no schedules were set in it, the 'smart' mode was selected instead of 'manual' mode, which I think blocked Ovo from starting. In manual last night, everything seems to have charged and recorded in the OVO app!!

@Marcel Bertie good morning, I hope you had a good weekend. Thanks for providing such a helpful update - it’ll no doubt help others in the same position. I’m happy to hear it’s all working now, and of course fire any more questions our way if you’ve got them.

Thanks for your help here as well @Nealeb, and @juliamc I hope Octopus can get yours sorted ASAP.

As it turns out there’s a lot of stuff online about the IOG - Zappi - Renault smart charging not working 🤦🏼‍♀️ I still haven’t got a smart charge to work yet ! Thank goodness we have lots of Sun and a roof full of solar panels.
