I’m an Eco Queen in Training!! :)

Since starting OVO’s Power Move I’ve made two big changes to my usual routine. I’ve switched lunch for dinner so instead of cooking a dinner in the evenings at peak time (4-7pm) I now cook at lunchtime when it’s cheaper. Having a hot dinner mid day means my body has enough fuel to do light exercise and keeps me warm all day.

The second thing was to change all my lightbulbs for LED energy efficiency ones. Not only are they brighter but they’re also cost next to nothing to run!  I bought these in the summer sales so win win for me 😊

I only boil the minimum amount of water for hot drinks which cost 1-2p. This is enough for my daily usage. To keep it hot all day I put it into a flask so that I’m not using electric at peak times.

I have a halogen cooker that is not only healthier for cooking but costs a fraction of the cost of a conventional cooker. They also have a self cleaning cycle. :)  I use a microwave and also a slow cooker, which cost about 10p for cooking large stews/casseroles and curries to freeze and use at a later date.

I don’t need a conventional TV as I watch programmes/movies on an iPad.

I use a mini wifi system (not a modem plugged in 24/7)

I use mobile phones instead of landlines. (Not that they cost a lot to run anyway)

All these devices are charged up at non peak times.

As are my ear buds and Fitbit.

And of course I use draft excluders in the winter! :)

All my savings go towards my holidays in the sun during the winter months, another win win for me :)

The only downside is that I’m obsessed with my smart meter!!!! :/ …….I NEED TO GET OUT MORE!!!!! 😂

If anyone else can help me save further I’d love to hear from them

@Noodles666

Congratulations Noodles666, Very impressive, been there and done it all but after 9 years I’m burn’t out. I too found I was obsessed with meter reading...in fact still download all the info every day and save power where I can...but it has cost me my mental health. Since Lockdown I haven’t been out and my Nissan LEAF is almost welded to the charger, importing during the day and exporting during the evening. That’s about 16 hours a day it’s not available to me and if I use it during the day that electricity has to be imported extra to normal to be ready for 7.00am next morning.

In short I feel I’ve done my due constraint and so have now bought a Diesel Land Rover Discovery to force me out of the house leaving the LEAF in the garage connected to the National Grid. Charging at motorway service stations has now become so expensive it’s cheaper to run a 2.7 ton Land Rover than an electric Nissan LEAF on long journeys.

You are a credit to The Green Movement...but don’t become a prisoner to it. Life is for living so get out and enjoy yourself, you’ve certainly earned it more than some.

Sounds like you’ve got lots of positives in place @Noodles666 . My only other suggestion would be an air fryer. We use ours now instead of the microwave most days and it uses less power.
My other question is if you have considered solar panels (if you can)? We had ours installed in 2012 and they paid for themselves in 6-7 years and now give us ‘free’ electricity.
For your smart meter updates, don’t forget that you can get info ‘on the go’ from the authorised third party companies which helps to keep track even when you’re out and about.

Good on you, I couldn't pit that much energy in to it 🤣

Thank you everyone for your kindness and helpful advice,

Leo, I’m sorry to hear about your burn out I had one myself but don’t give up. I became unwell as we were coming out of lockdown but am now getting my energy and zing back. I’m not going to get those two years back so I’m not hanging around anymore! As well as my winter holidays I go away every 4-5 weeks on mini breaks to see as much of life as I can cram in. So get that diesel Landy out and have fun with it off road!! 👍😊 Yes, leave the Leaf in the garage it’s where it belongs. I’m a bit of a rebel so will never have an electric car. 😈

BPLightlog: Yes I’ve had solar panels fitted this year and they are brilliant! They’ve cut my electric bill in half (hence all the holidays). I did consider an air fryer but I’m old school and (as they say) ‘If it ain’t broken then don’t fix it!!’ So I’ll wait until my halogen cooker packs up. To be honest I’ve only used it a couple of times in recent years so I can’t justify buying another product when I don’t really need it. 😊 I’m trying to buy less to save the planet (where’s superman when you need him!) but I’m failing miserably! 😮

I’m aware that some of my suggestions seem a little eccentric but then we’d be really boring if we were all the same and I do love my holidays and mini breaks! 😂😂😂
