Will a 3 phase smart meter work for my 2-phase supply and dual-rates?

My house has a 2-phase supply, with dual-rates (night and day). I’m guessing that no-one will make a Smart Meter for 2-phase supplies. Does anyone know if a 3-phase Smart Meter (when available) will be able to be fitted (and hence cope with one phase never being used)?

Do OVO offer 3 phase smart meters?

3 phase (aka polyphase) installations in domestic properties are few and far between, so it's a minority of meter engineers across the country that have the skills required to complete these installations. There are also some technical challenges in making sure your job is allocated to an engineer with these skills but we are just as keen as you are to have Smart available for these sites ASAP, so if you would like to take part in this beta stage release, please consider the steps below:
From the start of May 2023, if you have a single rate 3 phase meter (i.e. not Economy 7 / 2-rate etc.) we would encourage you to book a smart meter appointment as normal online or over the phone on 0330 303 5063. (Please do not attempt to book sooner than May unless you have been contacted.)

This will then go through to a specialist team who will validate that it is single rate job and that an 3 phase engineer is available in your region. If this is the case, they will re-book your appointment with the right engineer. (So please bear in mind your appointment date/time will likely change, but we'll try to keep it the same where possible.)

Unfortunately, if you have a 2-rate meter or are not in an area covered by our current crop of 3 phase skilled engineers, you will need to continue with your heritage meter. We know this will be frustrating, so we are sorry about that, we are working to expand our coverage and by you flagging your interest to us, you are helping us shape where and when that coverage develops. - thank you!

I can let you know that 3 phase smart meters aren’t available just yet for OVO customers, but I’m told we’re very close. I’m making a list of forum members interested in having one and I’ll add your name.

The 3 phase smart will handle all sorts of supply arrangements from 3 phase, Summation dual phase, the list goes on!!

Hello, Just point it out to the engineer on the day of the installation and they'll replace the meter tails :-)

Yes, I’m now on the variable plan.

Thanks for the update. DIsappointing that you have to suggest leaving Ovo as the solution😕

An update, but not encouraging. Phoned Ovo (in Feb) about polyphase meter, and after a bit of discussion with the person, I was told they could book me in for a poly-phase meter install, for about 4 weeks later in March. I checked they knew it was poly-phase required.

A string of letters, postcards, texts all confirming the appointment then followed. A text from the engineer (a very helpful person) a couple of days before the date to confirm, which I did. Then he noticed on the system that a poly-phase meter was required, and guess what … he can’t do those.

Absolutely ridiculous: why can’t Ovo get this right, and at least not build up expectations?

Hey @HexhamUser,

Sorry to hear you were let down,

There’s no change in the advice I have, @HexhamUser - polyphase meters are being fitted for OVO customers on a small but growing scale. Are you on OVO’s variable plan, Simpler? As most suppliers are priced the same these days you might consider getting a quote from a supplier that can book in a polyphase smart meter today.

I think @Tim_OVO’s advice here might be helpful to you. As you’re on the Variable Plan, it may be worth looking into other suppliers who will offer Polyphase Meter installs on a wider scale.

Hope this helps.

Still no progress for me. I have had my house’s electrics changed to only use a single-phase of our 2-phase supply, hoping that this would let Ovo install a single-phase Smart Meter. Promised an email and appointment 5 weeks ago, but still waiting. Phoned Ovo yesterday. Now I’m getting the story that: (1) I need to connect the DNO to get them to fit an appropriate fuse for a SM, and then I could make an Ovo appointment for a SM. I’ve never heard of this before. Has anyone?

(2) I would have to pay £300 approx when the meter was fitted to have a 3-phase engineer present (and Ovo presumably don’t have any in this area). This extra charge is completely unacceptable to me.

Is there any update on the progress of Ovo fitting 3-phase SMs, and if there is any prospect yet of 3-phase, dual-rate SMs being available any time in the conceviable future?

Hey @HexhamUser

Sorry to hear you’re no further forward with this. Were there no other suppliers you found fitting the meters on a larger scale yet either?

I’m going to reach out and see if there’s any development on fitting the polyphase meters on a wider scale, and how you should be going about it. I know there are only a relatively small number of engineers across the UK who are qualified and skilled to work on these jobs so availability is limited, but I know they’ve been working on growing this.

Just so you’re aware, I don’t know of any other suppliers actively doing these installs right now that are still going and didn’t get SoLR’d

In case it’s of any help @HexhamUser , a relative has recently had a polyphase meter (AMR) installed by the local DNO. I can’t see if you’ve already explored this option and it may not help on the cost but it might help on the speed.
They were having their system updated and had contact with National Grid and their DNO to set it up

I have an economy 7 meter and appear to have a 2 phase system as there are only 2 Fuses.

I want to fit Solar panels and have requested a Smart Meter.  I have had an automatic reply that my system is not suitable but no reason has been given,

In the past[ at least 3 years ago] when I had an engineer visit they suggested I arrange to have the system converted to single phase which seems a backward step.  Please advise when I can order a Smart Meter

Thank you

Hi @PDW2 , just so that you’re aware, this is a public forum and so not a direct channel to OVO. You will need to get back in touch with customer support.
From what I’ve seen, you would need a poly phase meter which is not an easy fit as they are not available in large quantities and need engineers with extra authorisation to fit.
Not sure why you think single phase would be a backward step unless you need extra power into the property. There are others on the forum who have some experience with poly phase meters but from what I remember, it’s always been with a 3 phase supply.
A 2 phase supply is rather unusual
