Why has OVO exaggerated my projected usage estimates after I got a new meter?

At the end of November last year OVO Energy's metering equipment in my home failed and had to be replaced. In April this year OVO Energy performed a Direct Debit check-in of my account following the renewal of my contract in March. This produced an estimate of my annual consumption which was 48% greater than for the same period last year! OVO Energy then demanded that I increase my Direct Debit accordingly.
Within three days I messaged OVO Energy Customer Services pointing out the error. This was ignored, with the result that a further seven days later OVO Energy sent a message advising that they would be compulsorily increasing my Direct Debit, despite me having earlier obtained an verbal assurance that they would not. As a result of my persistence the threat was eventually lifted. Despite this, as late as mid-May, OVO Energy were trying to show that the original estimate was correct.
It seems that the reason for OVO Energy's error lies with the replacement of the meter. The software is designed to project the future annual consumption based upon the meter readings of the previous twelve months. As the meter was only installed in November the software projected the future consumption based upon on the assumption that my consumption would be at the same rate as between November and April, thus ignoring the fact that consumption will fall dramatically during the summer months.
With so many of OVO Energy's customers' meters being replaced by Smart meters how many are being presented with exaggerated claims like this following a Direct Debit check-in?

Really sorry to hear that your new meters have skewed your projected usage figures, @martinkressman

I appreciate that estimates are not always going to be perfect but a 48% over-estimate is far from perfect.

I totally agree with this and would echo @Blastoise186’s reassurance that this is not the usual process following a meter exchange - our billing platform should factor in the usage data over the last 12 months from your previous meter when calculating the annual consumption which doesn’t seem to have happened in your case.

Whilst we’re not able to raise this corrected here on the forum, if you haven’t already, we’d recommend reaching out to the Support Team who’ll be able to investigate this further.

Hope we get this one resolved quickly for you.

Hi @ShepDog,

I’m sorry for the issues you’ve been having.

As we don’t have access to your account I can only speculate as to what might have happened here.

I’d first check your first bill and opening meter readings.

If it’s not a case of your first bill being incorrect, it may be that your estimated annual consumption is incorrect. As you have a smart meter this should be rectified as your readings start coming through.

You can check we are in communication with your smart meters online:

If you are having issues getting through to the Support Team on the phone you can contact them through web messenger.

I hope this helps.

Yes yet again OVO are increasing the Estimated Annual Usage figures they use for calculating Direct Debits.  Basically if users pay these increased demands for payments OVO have loads of cash on 10% + overnight interest, what a scam.

Do not contact support they have no idea about Annual Usage and have means to change.

Go to Trust Pilot and write a 1* review about how shoddy the transition from SSE is and they will contact you.

I had to do this myself as they tried to use this extortion tactic to double my DD, which has now been manually set so it is not auto-generated.  I have been with OVO now some 3 months and despite having a Smart Reader it is only recently that the consumption shown in the APP makes sense.   Beggars belief that after 3 years OVO can not offer a smooth transition.
