Should standing charges be reduced for those in need, or abolished completely.

Why can’t the most vulnerable members of society get reduced standing charges similar to council tax reductions. It seems unfair that an unemployed person with zero gas or electricity usage can still fall into debt due to these charges. ? Wouldn’t it be fairer if the charges were abolished & a slightly higher rate of usage charges applied?

    I agree. In fact instead of giving everyone £400 the gov could have stumped up for the cost of everyone’s standing charge for a couple of years.

    Yes. 

    There have been campaigns to get the standing charge removed and added to the unit rates.

    Also for social tariffs or tariffs for low energy users.

    Ofgem have been looking into options on the standing charge.

    There did use to be tariff with low or no standing charge and higher unit rates but they have long gone.

    Honestly, many people including myself could easily have managed without the £400. This could have been better targeted. We donated ours to charity.
