Ready for the Power Move summer challenge?

Updated by Bradley_OVO on 19/07/2024

A reminder of how Power Move Summer Challenge works for customers:
To reach a level, you'll need to use 8.50% or less of your home's total electricity use during peak times (6pm to 9pm, Monday to Friday). You can do this by moving your non-essential electricity use to other times of the day or to the weekend. The less energy you use during peak hours, the more you'll earn.

The Power Move summer challenge is now open. If you’re signed up to the spring challenge, you’ll be auto-enrolled into the summer challenge. You don’t need to do anything - you’ll receive your welcome communication on 1 July. The summer challenge is slightly different to previous challenges. Let’s find out more!

The new challenge

The challenge is to use 8.50% or less of your home’s total electricity between 6pm and 9pm, Monday to Friday. Your reward? Up to £10 per month energy bill credit.

What’s changing?

Weekends count as off-peak!

From 1 July, the energy you use on weekends will count towards the challenge.

Weekends are less carbon-intensive for the UK’s energy grid* so there’s more chance to reduce our collective carbon footprint. So it’s a good time to avoid peak weekday hours.

Does anything change if weekends are included towards the challenge?

Some months, like August, have more weekend days than others. And since weekend energy use isn’t peak time (peak times are Monday to Friday either 4-7pm or 6-9pm), that could help bring down your average peak time use.

It might also mean the mid-month update shows you’re a little over or under your target, depending on when the weekends fall in that month.

How does OVO calculate if I've hit the monthly target if weekends are included?

Imagine your home uses 240 kilowatt hours (kWh) in the month and 12 kWh during peak hours (6pm to 9pm, Monday to Friday).

Here’s how we work out the peak use percentage: (12 kWh ÷ 240 kWh) x 100 = 5 %

This means your peak use would be 5% for that month. That means you’d earn a £10 reward in this challenge.

Hey @Patsy

The key to Power Move is to move your energy outside the target windows of 6-9 during the summer. This may be harder to achieve if you're a very low-energy user, as you'd have to move an already substantially low amount into off-peak. If you're trying to cut down your usage to as little as possible, this may make it really difficult for you to meet each target.

We suggest increasing your usage if possible but keeping it on "off-peak." You may find that even though you're using more energy, you may start to hit the targets, and this could cover any excess energy you're using, allowing you to live more comfortably and use things such as a washing machine or dryer.

We change the off-peak times during the summer and winter months and notify members through posts on our forum (you'll see articles titled "summer/winter challenge," etc.), our website, and when you opt-in to the challenge.

Let us know if you have any further questions. 😊

I was away on vacation for 16 days out of 31 in august and still i couldn’t meet the target. I got no credit for August. During the days I was not here,  1.9kwH was being consumed for the fridge , clock etc. Does anyone know how OVO calculates the percentage usage you are meant be under.  The other 13 days the TV was on for approx, 2½ hours during the peak hours .  No appliances were switched on. I don’t get it.

@powersaver the answer is quite simple. You were away for over 50% of the month.

You need to MOVE usage to Off-Peak, not SHUTDOWN everything all month.

Sorry, but you don’t qualify for credits on this occasion because you didn’t actively take part.

Does anyone know how OVO calculates the percentage usage you are meant be under.

The calculation itself is a simple percentage.

For the whole months usage:
Total kWh used during 'peak hours' / Total kWh used overall * 100 = Power Move percentage.

Here’s a couple of examples:

Say you used the Ofgen ‘typical’ 225 kWh/month overall; and  you used 19.5 kWh of that during the Power Move hours.

19.5 / 225 * 100 = 8.67%
That’s above the 8.5% target so you have missed the current Power Mover Summer targets.

However say you still used the same Ofgen ‘typical’ 225 kWh/month overall; but only used 14.5 kWh of it during the Power Move hours.

14.5 / 225 * 100 = 6.44%
That’s below the 6.5% target so you have hit the current Power Mover Summer target for £10 reward.

You have done that simply by MOVING 5 kWh of usage a month out of the PM hours to different times.
You haven’t used any less electricity overall, you’ve just used it at different times.
(eg. By changing what time you do your cooking on an electric stove).

I said, Hey - Watts going on.

We haven’t managed the power move at all. We have solar panels and use most of our daytime electricity while the solar panels are generating the electricity. We also have other people living in the house who we can’t control their energy usage so have found it very difficult. The power move scheme doesn’t allow for solar panels.

Sorry but I disagree, I have solar and have hit every power move since I joined in April. I was 3.16% this month.

Your solar set up would make a difference but this also depends on if you have battery storage etc. Then it is import charge after midnight and so on.

I have looked at Octopus but when I take everything into account including there 0.14 pence export for solar compared with Ovo at 0.04 as I am hitting the challenge there is no insentive to move.  It actually all works out the same. Last we looked Octopus gave points towards offers all of which we wouldn't use.
