Hey @mushroom_picker ,
Sure thing. As soon as your mother has control of the supply - which MUST be done by signing up with the existing Supplier(s) first - she can switch freely to whoever she wants.
In your case, the best way to do this is to completely close down the existing British Gas account for the OLD house via the options at https://www.britishgas.co.uk/discover/home-move/ . Make sure to set the option to NOT transfer the account as you won’t want that. This should trigger the Moving Out process, issue a Final Bill and once that’s paid off, you can let go of that account forever as it’ll be shut down automatically.
At the NEW house, please identify the Current Supplier(s). For Electricity, please head to https://www.energynetworks.org/customers/find-my-network-operator and enter your postcode - you’ll then need to contact the relevant DNO that comes back in the results to ask them who supplies the property.
For Gas, please head over to https://findmysupplier.energy and enter the details there - it’ll come back with the supplier details directly.
Once you know who the current Supplier is for each fuel, you’ll need to create a temporary account with them - you can just use the basic Standard Variable Tariff for that as you won’t be staying long unless it’s OVO. If both fuels are already OVO, you can skip this and just do the next step below.
Once those are set up and you have control of the supply, you can head over to https://switch.ovoenergy.com and switch to OVO pretty much immediately, as well as picking your preferred tariff. The switch will complete within a few days and you’ll simply have to pay off the other suppliers in the meantime - it won’t be for much though.
Any questions, let me know!
As mentioned by Blastoise186, you’ll need to have an account set up with the current supplier before you can switch to a new one.
