Moved into a home with a smart meter, my usage seems really high?

Hi there,

The previous occupants, as OVO customers themselves, left their smart meter for my use. My heating bill is astronomical. Is there any way the smart meter could be contributing? It's a Trio 11? Am I entitled to ask for a new smart meter of my own to ensure it is performing accurately?

Thanks!

Hi @Technophobe , I presume you’re talking about the IHD (In Home Display) rather than the smart meter itself. These are designed to be left as they don’t work with another smart meter and have no bearing on your bill.
You can check on the meter itself for readings to see that those are being used for your charges.
If the meter readings are correct, you can check for accuracy here

Many thanks. I have an account, but the boiler is not appearing on it despite it supposedly having been registered with them and my having informed them of the change of ownership, equally to the fitter. This seems all terribly confusing. The online chat requires a wait of 30 minutes and I understand phone waits are horrendous. I’ll need to leave this meantime as it’s proving exhausting.

Thanks to all the help so far, I have found that the meter is sending daily readings. I have tried to reduce usage by putting the heating off overnight. I need to chase one or two other things the previous occupants have not done correctly.

So, it seems the boiler installer may not have commissioned it or failed to provide Gas Safe with his report. There is no Gas Safe record of new installation at my property. Chasing all of this up. Also, previous occupants had not "used" the thermostat and I need to get it wall-mounted and properly set. These are steps in the right direction, I hope and may provide the answers to the issue.

Not good when you have to chase this through. When you have time, it would be useful to know how you get on and if you think the forum can help again, just drop by

Thanks. All this has used a lot of my limited energy and has become very stressful as I need steady temperatures to not put a strain on my M.E. Other people's neglect and carelessness is so unhelpful. I will keep you posted and would not hesitate to return in the future as it has been invaluable. Thank you.

Hey @Technophobe,

I’m really sorry to hear this,

Registering for the Priority Services might help as you may be eligible for a free gas safety check.

  • Free Gas Safety Checks – some PSR members can get free Gas Safety Checks. Check if you're eligible for a free check:

    • Live with a child under five years old,

    • Live alone or with others and have reached state pension age, or

    • Live alone or with others and are disabled or chronically ill,

    • Live with others who have reached state pension age or are disabled, chronically ill or under 18 years old

  • I’m eligible. How do I apply? Just call 0330 303 5063 and we’ll get you booked in

  • What happens at a gas safety check?

    • A Gas Safe registered* engineer will come to your home to check the safety of your gas appliances and other gas fittings.

    • They’ll also examine the effectiveness of any flue, the supply of combustion air, it's operating pressure and/or heat input and that it's operating safely. If the engineer spots anything that’s faulty or not safe, they’ll disconnect your gas supply before they leave

    • The Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI as the gas registration body in Great Britain and the Isle of Man on 1 April 2009.

Hi @Yiddo74 , the ‘similar homes’ bit should be taken with a significant pinch of salt .. you’re never sure what they’re comparing.
It's best to check your meter readings to make sure they’re using actual and not estimated readings (can happen even with a smart meter).

You don’t mention heating - what fuel is used for space and water heating?
