If I join can Ovo make me have a smart meter?
I would really like to join Ovo’s 15M extended fix tariff but having filled out all of my details, there is a term and condition that I need to have a smart meter fitted,
"By signing up to our Extended Fixed plan, you’re agreeing to have a smart meter fitted (if you don’t already have one). We’ll contact you to arrange a suitable installation date for a smart meter to be installed in your property."
Having read about the legality of forcing smart meters on people, I am unsure if this is something that Ovo can actually enforce? Given the fact that last time someone tried to change my gas meter, the fitter had to call Northern Gas Networks out and refit the old meter to prevent a leak, I am hesitant to allow this. I also live in the north of England and therefore would likely get the radio controlled meter, which is really said to be ineffective and not future proof. that it is not necessary to have a smart meter fitted. I think it would be better if Ovo specified this term and condition before I put all of my details into their website and had a soft credit check.
So is this true, can Ovo make me as a new customer, have a smartmeter? Or should I just sign up even if I do not want a smart meter? If not, Does Ovo have any other tariffs available without a smart meter? Thanks!
