How do you get into debt on a PAYG top up meter?

Just very curious as to how I managed to get into a £450 debt transferring to OVO when I have been using PAYG - literally Pay As You Go - top up meter for years??

Any ideas?

I do not have any other meters, accounts or residences, and I live in a studio flat alone!

Hey @Unhappy at PAYG charges,

I’m really sorry to hear this,

I’d advise contacting the Support Team, they should be able to raise this to our billing team to investigate. If they’re unable to resolve this, there’s always the option to raise a complaint.

Keep us posted with how you get on.

The RTS shutdown is a very fluid situation, things are changing weekly if not daily.

So yes it isn't surprising that the ladies you were talking to were being cautious.

What they “knew” last Thursday may well have changed over the weekend.

Do you have any thoughts or opinions with regards to the question in the last segment of my update it would be nice to get a reply rather than you will have to contact someone in the customer services dept. After all that's what a forum are all about talking to people getting opinions and advice. Don't  meant to be sarcastic just looking for advise or an opinion.

Hey @Skaman

I’m really sorry for the stressful experience you’ve had.

We don’t access customer accounts on the forum unfortunately. There is the option to raise a complaint if you aren’t getting the resolution you’d like through the support team.

@Emmanuelle_OVO did answer your question about making a complaint.

It’s that first link.

Making a complaint is always the same process, - a formal complaint to the company in question and then escalation to the ombudsman if/when necessary.

Or if you meant do we have a comment on:

…. the energy supplier is by law responsible for the maintenance of the meter, …

In the RTS shutdown situation it could only have been a ‘yea but, no but’ situation.

Yes - They supplier is generally responsible for maintaing the meter,
but also
No - For a tiime Ofgen were telling suppliers that they couldn’t replace RTS setups with new RTS setups, and so there was nothing to replace them with because suitable replacements were still on the drawing board.
The suppliers hands were tied.

It’s only fairly recently that replacement meter types for the soon to become dead RTS setups have become available, before that there was nothing that could be used to replace an RTS meter setup.

In other words sometimes it happens that what a law says should be done cannot be complied with for a while for circumstances outside of the suppliers control.
You can complain about it, but it isn’t going to change until those circumstances change.
