Charge Anytime only works with some chargers? What happens if I switch from OVO?

I am soooo confused. i have been reading up on Ovo’s EV plans on and off all day…..

Nothing is very clear.

I have not yet bought a charger, even though i was not wanting one of Ovos. But is it

true i have to have one of theres to upgrade to drive?

I do not have a smart meter and i do not have gas.(oil only).

if i buy one of ovo’s chargers - what happens if i eventually move from ovo? is my

charger then useless with another energy company?

From 15 July Ohme chargers will no longer be compatible with Charge Anytime. We’ve recently updated the technology behind Charge Anytime. This is so we can keep making improvements and create new products that reward customers for driving EVs.

It's not been possible to integrate Ohme with this new technology. If you have an Ohme charger you’ll still be able to sign up to Charge Anytime by connecting with an eligible vehicle. We’re constantly looking to open up the eligibility to more EV models so if you don’t see your EV here, keep an eye on our page.

The limitation you have is that you are electricity-only and therefore not currently eligible for the EV tariffs from OVO.

This may well change in the future when tariffs are released again, but that doesn't help you in the meantime.

The only cheap off-peak EV tariff currently available to new customers that I'm aware of (as of 2/9/22) is the Octopus Go/Go Faster/Intelligent range. These all require a smart meter in order to send 30 minute readings, so you'd need to have one fitted before you could move onto the EV tariff. Go/Go Faster work with any cars and chargers. Intelligent requires a compatible car or charger (currently Ohme chargers).

we are getting a golf 8 style ehybrid - and looking at getting a Easee one charger? its untethered because we may get another in the future.

The golf is a good move. Most new cars will have a Type 2 socket, so getting a tethered charger isn't really a big issue (it's one reason that there are less options for untethered chargers now).

I have an MG ZS EV and an original Nissan Leaf (with a Type 1 socket), so I use an untethered charger. But now Nissan has moved over to Type 2 on the newer models.

I may get a slap on the wrist from the OVO mods for saying this, but I believe the VW Golf could well be compatible with the Intelligent tariff and so give you 6+ cheap hours each night without needing to have a specific charger. I know VW IDs are not compatible yet but other models of VW should be, but worth checking if this includes the e-hybrid. If it does, your car has just unlocked the 6 cheap hours for household use for you, so well worth having.

ChaDeMo and CCS are the connectors used on public rapid chargers. Your car would use one or the other. CCS is becoming the standard, ChaDeMo is a bit Betamax.

For home charging the car will either have a Type 1 or Type 2 socket. Type 2 is the most common now (even on new Leafs).

If you are buying a new EV it's very unlikely you will need a Type 1 cable, so a tethered Type 2 should be fine. No sign of Type 3's, that would just be cruel!

Tethered chargers are usually compatible with any EV that has a matching connector. So a Tethered EV Charger with a CHAdeMO cable will recharge basically any Nissan Leaf but unfortunately not much else because very few manufacturers use CHAdeMO in Europe.

On the other hand, a Tethered EV Charger with a CCS cable will recharge any EV with a CCS connector, which is over 80% of EV’s in Europe.
